What color should I paint my walls? I have medium dark grey carpet and white furniture?

I have champagne colored drapes and my accent pillows are dark purple and champagne. It actually looks very nice but I need to paint my walls im really sick of white color would be nice and changing the carpet and furniture is not an option

Aklymroofing answers:

House paint designed for interior or exterior decoration is sold at your local hardware store, paint shops, and do-it-centers nation wide. Many decorative paint manufactures show a huge range of colors on their charts, which are made by blending the main tints and tones of their collection.

It can be very frustrating to be forced into buying gallons of paint when all you need is a sample to test the color. Most paint suppliers will produce small test amounts of a color, especially if it is one of those, which you have requested to be mixed. Virtually all-interior painting jobs today, including walls, ceiling, and woodwork, are done using water-based paint, or oil-based paints.

Most good-quality commercial decorating house paint will last for many years if kept airtight in a sealed metal can. Once opened, however, paint’s shelf life is immediately reduced. Color decisions may be affected by the type of paint you have to use, for example, paints that are specifically designed for use on rough exterior walls come in a limited range of shades, while there is a huge variety of colors available for use on interior walls.

All paint should be kept in a cool place and out of direct sunlight. The colors with which we surround ourselves will without doubt have an effect on us.

House paint offers an enormous variety of colors, texture and pattern. It transforms the way in which we see them so that even their structures can seem changed. Choosing how to decorate and protect them can be difficult. Paint has the ability to make small structures appear larger and outside ones less overwhelming.

The function of a room is a crucial factor when deciding on its color and finish. When picking-out colors, find out how they look both in daylight and at night. So before you go decorating a room or anything else, it is worth taking the time to find out how colors behave in combination with each other.

Chris asks…

Is it easier to paint the exterior of a house with a brush or sprayer?

I want to paint my house this spring with the help of my boyfriend and roomate. I was wondering if it would be easier to paint it by hand or rent a sprayer and tape everything off?

What are the pros and cons of each?

Aklymroofing answers:

Just did this. First off, forget a brush, use a roller for God’s sake. Here’s the pro’s and cons

Pros for spraying – it takes less time than rolling. You can make several trips around the house to insure adequate coverage.

Cons for spraying – Overspray can get on your neighbors house and cars, and sometimes you won’t get the good solid coverage because its a fine spray that’s coming out of the sprayer

Pro’s for rolling – Puts on a good thick coat of paint, less prep work, and it’s great exercise

Con’s for rolling – Depending on the size of your house and how many levels it has, you’re going to work your butt off, (however some people like that). Also, you may run out of paint and if you do there is no guarantee that the next batch you buy will match exactly.

Good for you for wanting to do it yourself! Why not!?

Steven asks…

Would you other moms know how to get paint out of your child’s hair?

My 2 y/o daughter was helping me and my husband paint our exterior to the house today and she put the paint brush (full of paint) right smack dab into the middle of her head, lol! Now in her black locks is a huge smear of white paint :)

How do you get paint like that out of hair? It’s latex based, but is outdoor paint.

Aklymroofing answers:

If it is latex, it should wash out with soap and water. I would try that first, and if it doesn’t work, then perhaps try vinager like the other person said.

Mary asks…

Exterior wood decking paint peels off year after year, why?

i sand it, tack cloth it, prime it and paint it. these are 2×6 boards on a raised catwalk at my home. the exposure is to the west with floor to ceiling glass refecting from the home. should i switch to an oil based paint? advise?

Aklymroofing answers:

Was the wood brand new or seasoned? It has been a while since I have dealt with decks but I know the wood needs to be seasoned and settled before you can paint it. Look for a water seal like Thompsons for new wood. This is something you would want to apply for the first year before you seal and paint it the next year so I am not sure whether or not you could even use it at this point. I am guessing the problem is trapped moisture in the wood and the sun reflecting onto it is only making it worse. Sorry I cannot be more help but consult your local hardware store to see if they have any suggestions for bringing the moisture out of your wood. Good Luck.

Laura asks…

can someone give me ideas on what color to paint the exterior of my house and trim?

Aklymroofing answers:

Lisa;
I suggest that you go into one of the home centers like Lowe’s or Home Depot and review the individual paint manufactures brochures showing homes with various color schemes.

I want to give you some advice on brands of paint and costs relative to the product and labor.

Home Depots Behr Brand is expensive and has very poor coverage. Yes, it’s color is incredibly true and clean, but that only comes into play if your a decorator and want to match a fabrics color perfectly. If you use it, plan on 3 to 5 coats to get it even especially with the Pure White. Their Evermore line by Glidden is excellent both in color and coverage and I prefer it when choosing paint at this particular store.

The best of the best in the home improvement centers is at Lowe’s and known as American Tradition which is made by Valspar. I think this particular paint is the best out there for the money in color clarity and coverages.

Without going through every manufacturer product line(s) I will leave off with the big secret. Wal-Mart’s Color Place Paints are made for them by Sherwin-Williams and it’s S&W’s best paint in those cans. The best part of this FYI is that you’ll pay half the price at Wal-Mart for the same exact paint that you’ll pay for in the Sherwin-Williams store.

Ruth asks…

Can someone help me solve this problem please? Jim wants to have the exterior siding on his house painted.?

Two sides of the house have a height of 18 feet and a length of 22 feet, and the other two sides of the house have a height of 18 feet and a length of 19 feet. The painter has quoted a price of $2.50 per square foot. The windows and doors of the house take up 100 square feet. How much will the painter charge to paint the siding? Show work, thank you!

Aklymroofing answers:

[2(18×22) + 2(18×19) – 100] x $2.50
=[792 + 684 – 100] x $2.50
=1376 x $2.50
=$3440
= Jim would be riped off and should do it himself.

A can of paint could do 300 sq feet. 5 cans of paint (depending on brand) could run around $250.
Even if he did it the easy way and rented scaffolding for the day (about $40) plus beer and pizza for a few friends say another 250.

Jim would save around 2900 if he did the job himself.

Carol asks…

I have heard that micro fiber rags are not good for washing cars. Is that true?

What is the best kind of wash cloth to use for newer cars?

Aklymroofing answers:

Microfiber is definitely the future when it comes to exterior car care. Now if you are washing your car by hosing down the car and then have a bucket full of suds then microfiber would not be the best solution.

You see microfiber actually will trap dirt in its fibers and can actually end up adding little cobweb scratches in your paint over time. That part should be done with a high quality wool (real not fake) mitt, that you rinse off in a different bucket of just water after applying it to a dirty panel.

Where microfiber is great is for removing various sealants, waxes, and polishes.

Be careful though, not all microfibers are the same! Many ones you find at your local stores are of poor quality. Keep an eye out because many have rough edges than can introduce more scratches to you paint. Snip those away.

I’ve found that if you need an OTC microfiber towel that Targets Vroom brand is one of the best, the orange ‘premium’ ones are pretty good.

Final note is there is a better way to wash your car and I’ll just add the link here:

David asks…

I want to buy a used car, but I do not know what to check. Can somebody advise me?

I am thinking to buy a used car, but I do not know how to make sure that the car does not have debt or something strange.

Aklymroofing answers:

As long as the title is clear (no lien statement on it), there’s no debt on it.

Here’s some rules you should consider when buying a used car

(1) don’t get sold on the paint job = meaning cars having good exterior, fancy CD radio, etc.

(2) look for car with sound ENGINE + TRANNY + SUSPENSION.

(3) test every button, knob, switch, slider, etc.. Ex: even in the summer test out the heater & even in the winter test out the AC (if you can). Slide the AC/heater to fan1, fan2, fan3, etc. Then slid the vent to defrost, front, bottom, etc. Test the high beam, low beam, etc. Test (flip) the visor. Test the alarm. Test all 4 doors. Test the rear defogger.

***** TEST EVERYTHING.

(4) BEFORE the first start, open the engine bay and see if the engine is already warmed up. Many engines starts well when already warmed up, but may have problems when cold (or cold start).

(5) test drive with the sound system off and window down. Listen for weird sound coming from the wheels & suspension.

(6) Look inside the engine bay to see if you can see see leaks, etc. It is normal to see some oil and grease. But too much means that the car is leaking oil somewhere. Too clean (really clean) means they just wash the engine bay – possibly hiding some oil leaks.

(7) check the engine oil dip stick. If the oil is BRAND NEW CLEAN, the seller MIGHT be hiding something. If the oil is jet black and /or smells like gasoline (or burnt), you might have engine problem).

(8) once you are satisfied with the above – you can NOW take it to the mechanic for the engine + tranny + suspension inspection. He won’t find everything, but he will find the obvious. Take it to a mechanic EVEN if you are buying from a used car dealer. They cars are NO better than cars you buy from ebay and craigslist.com. Just more expensive.

Good Luck…

how do you get exterior paint off of a ring?

I was painting my back fence and got the paint on my wedding rings. I can’t seem to get it off it’s been two days so the paint is dry now. both rings are white gold and the paint is around the diamonds in both rings. is there a way I can clean it myself without having it professionally done?

Aklymroofing answers:

If you have some WD40 on hand spray the ring with it let it sit for a bit and with an old tooth brush gently brush the ring to loosen the paint , it might take a couple of attempts depending on how deep the paint went, but the next time that you decide to paint please remove the rings!

Lizzie asks…

What is the difference in ingredients between exterior and interior paints?

If it is algaecides and herbacides, or whatever, can I add those ingredients to interior paint and use it externally? What would I buy and how much would I add to the gallon of interior paint to compensate?

Aklymroofing answers:

It is the strength of the polymers and the acrylics..some exterior paints have insecticide and fungicide to prevent bugs from nesting and mildew forming..You would spend more money trying to make this work than you would by simply buying a gallon of exterior paint..And then the formula wouldn’t be right, and some of these ingredients are illegal to purchase without a license

Helen asks…

Can I use exterior latex paint on the interior?

I’ve just painted the exterior trim on a new bathroom window. Can I use the same latex paint on the interior trim of this bathroom?

Aklymroofing answers:

Exterior paint coats the outside of a building or structure. It must withstand sun, rain and snow. Exterior paint remains flexible after curing so that it won’t crack or peel as the surface expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity. Additives for mildew, fungus and UV resistance are added to exterior paints. Exterior paints are often not as easy to scrub as good interior paints. They typically come in three sheens — flat, semi gloss and high gloss.

Interior paints are often harder and more washable than exterior paints. They are available in a wider range of sheens, including flat, matte, eggshell, satin, semi gloss and high gloss. While some interior paints have mildew remover added for use in bathrooms, most do not. When dry, they withstand the same temperature extremes as exterior paints, but will not hold up well in wet or sunny conditions.

Using exterior paint inside may not be safe. Some of the additives in exterior paints have not been approved for use inside homes. All water based paints take up to a month to cure, and during this time they are emitting VOCs (volatile organic compounds.) This can be of particular concern for people with breathing difficulties, small children, and pregnant women. Additionally, exterior paints are often not as stain resistant or washable as interior paints. So while it is technically possible, it is not really advisable. It would be fine to use exterior paint inside any building where safety and washability are not concerns, like sheds and garages.

What can I replace with my french doors?

I have exterior french doors at the back of the house. The rough opening is larger then regular patio doors. I don’t think we want to replace them with another french door. What would be some other ideas. We don’t want to put a wall there,

Aklymroofing answers:

The rough opening is always larger. Most double patio doors are 2’6″ each or 3’0″ eaach, making the finished opening 5 1/2 or 6 feet. I’m guessing you have a pair of 3’0″ doors, 6’8″ tall, which is the same size as a patio slider combo. If you don’t want french doors, don’t want patio slider, and don’t want wall, about the only thing left is windows. A pair of 2’8 5’0″s will fit nicely, with the sills a foot above finished floor. If you want them mulled together, use a double 3 0.

I just installed a new door & I have air gaps at the bottom corners of the door? I have tried weather stripping & that didn’t work. Not too sure what to do. I would like to get this fixed before winter.

Most exterior doors have an adjustable strip mounted in the threshold. There are usually 5 large screw heads visible You can raise or lower the different sections of the strip by backing out or screwing in the screws.

HOME DECOR – What type of blinds/window treatment should I use for the window in my front door?

I have an exterior (front) door with some glazing/a window in it, approx 24″ x 36″ in size. For privacy/security reasons I need to cover over this window at night. I haven’t yet been able to find anything suitable – light enough, easy enough to open, easy to install on the door. Does anyone make blinds or covers specifically for this purpose? Or has anyone come up with a DIY solution?

Aklymroofing answers:

At just about any store you can find thin metal curtain rods that you can attach to the top and bottom of the window. I hung mine just to cover the window (top and bottom), and made some cotton panels that could be closed, or opened, by sliding to each side. If you are unable to sew, you can purchase a pair of curtains and just adjust the rods to fit it. Hope this helps

Laura asks…

How much should it cost to install an exterior door?

We have an old house, built circa 1920. I believe the doors that are here are original to the house. They are odd sizes, the front is 32″ x 77″ and the back door is a little smaller 30″ wide and a little shorter.

The contractor would need to remove the siding around the doors, enlarge the opening, and do all that stuff. I guess it’s a bit of work because the openeings need to be enlarged..

I got an estimate from lowes and they quoted me 1700 dollars just for installation.
That seems really high to me. I was thinking closer to 1000.

Am I way off base?
I live in Southern NJ if that matters.

Aklymroofing answers:

It should run you between $1500.00 to $2,000.00, depending on the amount of work involved. By the sounds of things, ther is a lot of work to replacing your doors!

Some contracotrs may even charge more, if there are underlaying challenges, like rotted rough-in framing, uneven settling to the framing, rotted sill plates, etc.

Be prepared for mybe 15% to 20% extra if the framing is bad, but I think $1700.00 is a good quote, all things considered!!

How do I find car paint to match my car?

I have a 2002 gold Buick rendezvous, I need just a little bit of that gold paint to fix a small spot of the side of the car. I bought “exterior gold car paint” from wal mart but then later learned that I bought the wrong shade of gold. Could someone please help me find this paint? A link to a website would be awesome

Aklymroofing answers:

What you need to do is look for the manufacturer plate on your vehicle. They are commonly on the driver’s side door jamb, but could also be in the engine bay on the firewall. On that plate somewhere should be a paint code (Usually 3-digits). Just take that paint code to your GM dealer and they can give you the appropriate touch-up paint. Any good body shop can also get you this paint if they have the paint code.

Can osb particle board be used for exterior use?

I was going to make rabbit hutches to sell. I see a lot of people using usb particle board & painting it.. Since most people do not want to pay much for them, I thought this would be a way of making them & selling them a lot cheaper. Would this particle board if painted w/ a good exterior paint hold up very long.?

Aklymroofing answers:

I don’t know of any particle board that is rated for exterior use…and presumably you are talking about rabbit hutches that would be used outside. I doubt any paint could protect it sufficiently for exterior use. Plus, don’t you want to avoid painting any surface that rabbits might chew? Rabbits like to chew.

Your best bet might be exterior grade plywood, which I have used and it has held up very well in my chicken coop. I know with exterior grade plywood, they use exterior grade glues to adhere the layers.

Ruth asks…

How do you get bats to move into a new bat house?

I built a bat house four years ago exactly per spec but I still don’t have any bats living in it. Is there some way to “advertise” for tennants?

Aklymroofing answers:

Attracting Bats – http://www.batcon.org/bhra/attracting.html

Bats have to find new roosts on their own. At this time, there are no proven lures or attractants (including bat guano) that can be inserted in or applied to a bat house. Bats will investigate new roosting opportunities while foraging at night. They are quite good at detecting crevices, cracks, nooks, and crannies that offer shelter against the elements and predators. Bat houses installed on buildings or poles are easier for bats to locate, have greater occupancy rates, and are occupied 2.5 times faster than those mounted on trees.

Unlike domestic animals, bats are wild and free-ranging, and it is typically illegal to buy or sell them. Permits to capture and possess bats are normally limited to researchers, zoos, wildlife rehabilitators and certain educational organizations. Catching and relocating bats to new areas is, in any case, highly unlikely to succeed. Bats have good homing instincts, and once released into a bat house, will attempt to return to their former home area. Placing bats in a bat house is therefore not recommended. If a bat house remains unoccupied after two full years, we recommend repositioning the house or making appropriate modifications.

Maintaining proper roost temperatures is probably the single most important factor for bat house success. Temperatures inside a bat house should be warm and as stable as possible (ideally 80º F to 100º F in summer) for mother bats to raise their young. Some species, like the big brown bat, prefer temperatures below 95º F, while others, like the little brown bat, can tolerate temperatures in excess of 100º F. Bachelor bats are less picky, and may use houses with cooler temperatures. Wooden or masonry structures are the best mounting sites, especially in colder climates, as temperatures are more stable than for houses attached to poles or trees.

Bat house temperatures are influenced directly by the exterior color (dark vs. Medium vs. Light paints/stains), compass orientation (east-, southeast-, or south-facing are generally good bets for single houses in most climates), the amount of sun exposure, how well the house is caulked and vented, and also the mounting substrate and construction materials used. You may have to experiment to get the right placement and temperature range. You can always use a thermometer taped to a pole (check the chambers high and low, and front and back), to see if temperatures are suitable inside the bat house. Where possible, installing multiple houses is advised to provide a wide range of options from which bats can choose. Bats may move from one house to another throughout the year to find more favorable microclimates or to deter predators.

Pick installation sites with great care to avoid having to move a bat house once it becomes occupied. Most bat houses have open bottoms; therefore guano will not accumulate inside. Guano will end up on the ground underneath, however. Avoid placing bat houses directly above windows, doors, decks, or walkways. Bat urine may stain some finishes. Two- or four-inch spacers between a bat house and wall, a large backboard, or a longer landing area below a bat house may reduce excrement collecting on a wall. A potted plant, or a shallow tray or plant saucer, can be placed underneath a bat house to collect bat guano for use as fertilizer in flower beds or gardens. Do not use a bucket or deep container to catch droppings (unless ¼-inch or smaller mesh covers the entire top of the container), as any baby bats that fall will become trapped inside. Some bat species are able to retrieve their pups from the ground.

Once you have attracted bats, as a “bat house landlord” it is your responsibility to maintain the houses in good condition to keep bats coming back year after year. Wasp and mud dauber nests should be cleaned out each winter after bats and wasps have departed. New caulk and paint/stain may be required after three to five years to guard against leaks and drafts. Bat houses should be monitored at least once a month (preferably more often) to detect potential problems such as predators, overheating, wood deterioration, etc. Any repairs or cleaning should be performed when bats are not present.

How often should I paint the exterior of my house?

Mary asks…

How much paint do I need for a 40 by 20″ house?

To paint the exterior of the house how much money would it cost to use good paint.

Aklymroofing answers:

1. Add together the length of each wall.

14 + 20 + 14 + 20 = 68 feet
2. Multiply the sum by the wall height, to find the total wall area.

68 × 8 = 544 square feet
3. Subtract 20 square feet for each door (20 × 2 = 40) and 15 square feet for each window (15 × 2 = 30) to find the actual amount of wall area you’re painting.

544 – 70 = 474 square feet
4. Divide this figure by the paint coverage (350 square feet per gallon), and the result is the number of gallons to purchase.

474 ÷ 350 = 1.4

New kind of exterior paint?

I was watching an home improvement show, forgot which one, they were showing an exterior paint that gets spray painted on and it goes on 10 times thicker than normal paint but when it dries it is tough like vinyl siding. The said in the show that you don’t have to paint again, the paint is UV protection and mold resistant.
The question is, does it really work, what brand and product name and where can I get it?

Aklymroofing answers:

Yes it des work. There are actually several companies doing this (it’s not a DIY job). The best is called Protectacoat (website www.protectacoat.co.uk). It’s expensive, but not if you think you will never have to touch the outside again. It is much more than just spraying on thick paint. All the imperfect rendering, brick etc. Is removed from the outside. A special bottom coat is put on which contains fibre glass and resins, weaterproofing and goodness knows what. Then a final coat. It is self cleaning, mould proof, flexible so never cracks. If you ever want to alter the outside the firm will come and repair any damage at no charge, and it’s guaranteed for at least 25 years.

In the Owner’s Manual for the camera there is a section on “Care and Cleaning” of your camera. It will tell you how to clean the exterior of the camera and the lens.

Take your camera to a real camera store and buy a lens cloth. There are several brands. Buy a lens brush (sometimes called a “lipstick brush because it looks like a tube of lipstick) to remove any loose dust on the lens. Ask the salesperson to show you how to use the brush and cloth. Once your lens is clean, buy a UV/Haze filter or Skylight filter and keep it on your lens. Buy a quality filter – Heliopan, Singh-Ray, B+W, Tiffen, Hoya. You may as well buy a circular polarizer while you’re there. A polarizer can be used to darken a blue sky and remove glare from water, leaves, sand, glass, snow and painted metal – but not polished metal.

Cleaning a filter is always better than cleaning a lens. Replacing a filter is also much cheaper.

Have them check the sensor and clean it if needed. They may offer to sell you one of rhe several sensor cleaners available.

In 37 years I have never used a liquid lens cleaner. Since every lens I own (except my 16mm full-frame fisheye) is protected by either a UV/Haze filter or Skylight filter all I do is brush off any loose dust and then use my lens cloth to finish the job. If there’s a smudge, I simply breathe on the lens and then use the lens cloth.

Never be tempted to use canned air like you’d use on your keyboard to clean inside your camera. That is almost a guarantee that you’ll be spending money on repairs. A bulb-type blower brush maybe, used with the lens mount pointed down.

want to repaint aluminium window frames, exterior?

paint has blistered in places what do i need to do and product to buy, want to repaint frames also brighten up,what should i do and what products do i need to buy and type of paint please

Aklymroofing answers:

You need anodized bronze. Home Depot has it.
This is the color that is most often used to paint aluminum windows and door frames. However; aluminum is normally plastic powder coated in high temperature ovens, because paint does not adhere to aluminum very well, but you have little other choice but to paint it when it is already on your house.
Also get some masking tape and masking paper to protect other surfaces. You can use peelable temporary masking coating or masking gel on the glass surfaces, but be extra careful not to get it on the surfaces to be painted. Rustoleum brand is one of the best.
Here is some helpful information:

Richard asks…

Recently had powder coated steel stair treads installed, showing rust spots after 2 weeks; This normal?

The exterior stairs have seen little use and the rust spots are even in some corners where stepping doesn’t occur. Contractor sounds like coming back with touch up paint is the solution. My concern is these are brand new and perhaps weren’t properly prepped when initially painted.

Thanks!
The treads are bolted to the powder coated steel C-channels which have no rust spots by the way.

Aklymroofing answers:

Did they come as separate pieces and were welded to the stringers on site? This happens alot for wrought iron projects. Sep. Pcs. Are powder coated off-site, then brought to jobsite and welded. Metal must be cleaned of paint for the weld. Then they usually just spray joint with a rattle can or brush paint. These areas don’t get full effect of powder coating. This should still be addressed by installer. Call him and make him fix it. After that you might want to keep them protected I once talked to a railing company rep that said spraying parts down with Armot-All every so often will prevent rusting and keep iron looking good. Hope that helps some.

Lizzie asks…

How do you clean red brick?

they are old but still good.dull red due to dirt and looks like old mortor.. I wonder if there is an acid based cleaner? Thank you!!

Aklymroofing answers:

You can paint brick and make it look brand new.

Use 3 different shades of red, all similar but in varying shades. This makes the paint look more like real brick. Paint the brick in the lightest of the reds first. Allow to dry. Then dab with the other two shades to create a natural look.

Use Exterior style paint in Eggshell, Satin, or flat finish. You don’t want a glossy paint or it will look weird.

This works.

How does Glidden exterior paint stack up against the competition?

Aklymroofing answers:

I have more than 25 years experience as a painter and if you use the top of the line of any ones paint you can’t go wrong but just remember it is the preparation that will determine if your paint job will last for many years to come and also look good. If you are having to do any priming make sure that you use an alkyd primer. All of the paint and home improvements stores now a days will try and sell you an acrylic or a bonding primer. As much as acrylic paints are ok for your finish coat they will not adhere properly especially when it comes to horizontal surfaces such as window sills and make sure that you caulk every and fill every crack and hole. The main reason why exterior paint peels is because of water. If you have to caulk any unpainted wood at least prime if before you caulk and do not ever use silicone caulking unless it is on glass. Silicone caulk will not stick to any other surfaces outside and especially not wood. Always sand. Scrape and clean what you are painting first and sand in between coats.

CAN I USE AN EXTERIOR PRIMER TO PAINT AN INTERIOR?

CAN I USE AN EXTERIOR PRIMER TO PAINT AN INTERIOR

Aklymroofing answers:

You can – it is more expensive and smells bad — be sure to ventilate –

Thomas asks…

is it ever too hot to prime brick exteriors?

it is scheduled to be 100+ for the next few days and we had planned to prime our brick house exterior this weekend. does the heat pose a risk?

Aklymroofing answers:

I wouldn’t call it a risk but,if you apply the primer in that kind of heat its going to suck it up and actually dry it out quicker than it should normally dry.i think if you read the can it will probably tell you not to apply if its over 92-95 degrees out and or very humid.this could also lead to the paint peeling a lot sooner than normal.hope this helps.

Mandy asks…

What happens if primer (exterior) isn’t painted over?

Had to leave home quickly for extended work abroad. Probably won’t get painted for 6-8 months. Luckily it’s white and the rest of the house is white too.

Aklymroofing answers:

It will deteriorate. Primer doesn’t stand up to weather very well. You may just have to wash and prime again when you get home.

Mary asks…

Painting a wall mural indoors at school. Need help choosing type of primer and paint, please!?

I have absolutely no experience with paint on a large scale. I’ve been told that oil based paint is the best for sticking on walls. Must I also buy oil based primer? How much primer will is generally needed? Any and all help and adive is welcome!

Aklymroofing answers:

I have done tons of murals in school, gyms, etc. I always use the paint they already have on hand (used for their walls) as well as the latex interior or exterior paint that I have. Most of the walls are latex these days – just make sure it is not oil paint on their walls (I always ask the custodian about what paint was used on the walls and if they have some I can use). You do not want to paint latex/acrylic over oil – it will not stay. There are many latex house paint colors available and some stores sell mis-tinted paint very cheaply. I usually do not prime the walls (just make sure they are clean) – I use either the background color already there or I paint a new background color before starting. I draw with chalk or pencil (the pencil can show through if it’s dark, so be aware of that). Then I paint my mural. I use sturdy paper plates as palettes and house painting brushes plus lots of paper towels and a big bucket for water. See if they have a cart with wheels for your supplies and see if they can be stored there in a locked closet (always the easiest) and ask about a ladder if you need one. Good luck!

Helen asks…

How much does painting your car generally cost?

I have a 2003 coupe Dodge Stratus R/T. Right now it’s like an eggshell white and I’m thinking about getting it painted black.

Aklymroofing answers:

Painting a car is a very big deal. The problem is the inside of the doors and trunk and hood. If you just have the exterior painted by Macco or Earl Schibe it will cost low end $500. To $750. But, every time you open the doors and the trunk and hood you will see the previous color and it is quite noticeable even unattractive. Plus the quality of paint and the car preparation (sanding, masking, rubbing the paint out to help it shine and be smooth) are of the lowest quality. Usely these paint jobs last maybe two years max. A quality paint job where they take the time and effort to do the job right and make it look good and use a quality paint is much more expensive starting at $2500. Up to $10,000. The way to save money is to have the paint matched and paint it in the previous color. That way it will look really great because the inside of the doors match and you don’t have to pay to have them done. I would recommend for your Stratus instead of paint buy a nice graphics package from a auto custom sign shop. They can really make a car look hot for $500 to $2500.

Sharon asks…

Why do so many people paint the exterior of their front door red?

I’ve noticed this for years, but never could understand why. And a lot of follks paint the interior of a covered porch light blue. Can’t understand that either. Anybody know?

Aklymroofing answers:

Its based on the traditional belief that a red door will repel evil spirits from entering the house. However, in modern times its done for aesthetic purposes, a bold red door is a great accent color, especially on white, grey, tan, green, or brick houses.
The blue porch—-I have no idea.

Donna asks…

I need help choosing an exterior color for a small ranch home.?

I live in NE ohio in the suburbs. Most of the houses in my neighborhood are small ranches and bungalows, usually light colored exteriors. Our roof is a brown color (not dark), siding is a golden yellow, and the trim is a darker rust brown. My wife hates the yellow but we cannot choose a color. I feel like the brown roof really limits our choices. We would like it to stand out a little and we will be painting the siding and the trim. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Aklymroofing answers:

Consider: [ all go with brown ]
white, off white, ivory with drak green or tan trim
peach or salmon, with terra cotta trim
butter yellow? With golden yellow trim[ or wife wants no yellows at all? ]
aqua with turquoise or teal
sage or celery green, with moss or hunter green trim
powder or smoke blue, with royal blue
light caramel tan with brown, or beige with tan or dark green

Paul asks…

What are the procedures to paint the ouside of my house? it’s wood on the outside.?

What colors would go with a dark brown eves and trim? how about beige? or cream?
ok the outside the wood part is already a sage color..do i still need to prime it? or just use another paint on top of it?

Aklymroofing answers:

1) SCRAPE all loose paint off and sand the areas to make them smooth.
2) apply a quality primer to the house
3) Select a good quality Latex Exterior house paint…don’t even think about oil based paint! Choose semi or satin gloss for easy cleaning
4) Today’s tastes tend to go for more definite colors…look at strong tan’s to light browns…I have never found anything charming about heavy colored high contrast trims…they chop the house into too many parts. Forget cream…looks like something out of the Victorian era. Don’t be afraid of color…adds charm if chosen correctly.
5) Do not skimp on the cost of the paint…you get what you pay for, especially in paint. A good paint can last 10 years or more…a cheap paint will not make if for more than a couple of years, and that is a lot of work to repeat.

How much would changing the interior and color of my car cost?

I have a 2003 mitsubishi galant and I want to change the color of it from burgundy to black. And also change the interior from fabric to leather. How much would that all cost?

Aklymroofing answers:

I worked at a shop that charged about 4000 for the whole car to be painted exterior and interior. The interior should be around 1000 – 1500 only because they have uninstall everything and paint it and then install everything back . The fabric to leather seats will be around 800 at a local shop.

I have a 48′ Ferro-Cement Sail Boat located in CA. How much would it cost to scrape and paint the Hull?

Below the water line exterior only.

Aklymroofing answers:

To add to the do it yourself cost per foot folks….ferro cement boats have a serious, amaybe even fatal, weakness…the ferro part; ie there’s a steel mesh inside the hull’s concrete, just like a road or a patio slab; if there’s leaking…and remember there’s a good deal of pressure forcing sea water into a hull, then the steel rusts, expands more water gets, more rust, and its hell on earth……..many folks say impossible… To ever fix the hull again. USCG down here just withdrew the certificate from a ferro day sailor with this problem. You need to be ABSOLUTELY SURE EVERY SQUARE INCH of the bottom is sound, then paint with many barrier coats before you get around to the anti fouling paint. Read the paint cans, look at Interlux and Pettits web sites, look at Sansom Marine…..big builder of ferro boats …for a good paint SYSTEM….barrier coat, primer, paint…..once sea water gets into a ferro hull its life is limited to maybe a few years…

What will adhere to 1/4″ plywood on the wall to make a textured service?

The wall I have covered is the wall of a screeed in porch that is subject to hot and cold (sometimes below 32 degrees) weather, but will not be in moisture. It is the back side of my house. We don’t get much winter anymore and it is sticky hot here in the South. I have also painted a primer on the plywood with the thought of a texture paint would work. But now I’m not sure. What ever I use on that wood needs to be able to cover all the seams where the plywood is joined together. Other thoughts would be an exterior stucco or some type of mortor. But what ever I use will be painted afterwards. Anyone have any thoughts on this.

Aklymroofing answers:

Buy some exterior paint which ever color you prefer, while your at the store get some play sand and mix it into the paint its a little hard to roll on but it looks nice and has a nice texture and should cover the seams pretty well depending on the amount of sand you use in the paint. Good luck

Sandy asks…

what is the difference in expensive primers and cheep ones?

we are starting with new drywall and mud should we use an expensive primer or will cheeper ones be ok to use

Aklymroofing answers:

Cheap primers are usually watered down and wont cover or seal as well as the better quality primers. The better the primer the less money you will spend on the finish coats. What primer does is penetrates the material you are painting along with sealing the pores of the material so after it is dried moisture will not be able to penetrate the surface. If you are painting wood I like an oil based primer which gives you the option of lightly sanding between coats to knockdown the grain of the wood or brush strokes of the primer. On drywall you can use either the water based primer or oil based primer. Exterior use water based. This step to painting anything is the most important step to giving you a perfect finish coat . Cheap primers wont seal the surface and you will end up with a huge headache because instead of 2 finish coats you will end up doing 4 5 maybe 6 coats before it stops sucking into the material. Like my father used to tell me ” theres a right way and a wrong way to do things so if you want cheap thats what the finish product will look like

Robert

Maria asks…

I am painting my old wood siding, can I use an oil primer and latex paint? Which is better?

My wood siding is very old and dry, I want to seal it so the paint won’t be absorbed into the wood and it will be better protected.

Aklymroofing answers:

The only primer to use, in my mind, interior or exterior, is Kilz original. It is oil, actually alkyd, based. Technically they don’t make oil-based products anymore. That aside, it is the only primer I recommend – ever.

How old is very old? Also, what is the wood? If it is German pine, it doesn’t matter what you do, it will peel. German pine NEVER stops oozing sap, or at least it hasn’t in most house I’ve seen it on (some as old as 1852). However, it wasn’t commonly used in homes built in the 20th century.

Get as much of the old finish off the siding. If it is very old, you will have lead-based paint on it. Make sure to wear a respirator when scraping / sanding. Get as much off as possible with scraping so it stays in large pieces. Make sure to have plastic dropcloths underneath you as you work to catch the pieces and keep the paint chips from getting into the ground.

Once that is done, wash with a mixture of bleach and water. Typically 1/4 cup bleach per gallon of water is what is recommended, but unless there are serious moss and/or mildew issues I use 1/4 cup bleach per two gallons of water.

After that thoroughly dries, prime with the Kilz. If you get down to bare wood that is quite dry, do two coats. This, being alkyd-based, cannot be sprayed.

Once the priming is done, you can top coat with whatever you want. Primers do not have the high alkaline levels that paint do, so latex paints will bond to the primer. I would suggest a good, 100% acrylic paint. It will hold it’s color better, and will form a nice thick coat on the outside. I would suggest doinng two coats of this as well, although if the right color is used you can get away with one.

How do you remove paint from wooden door?

This exterior wooden door has at least 6 coats of paint on it and I would like to restore it to it’s natural condition. What is the best way, or best product to use, to remove the existing paint that is on it?

Aklymroofing answers:

Before I retired I was painting contractor and charged $450 to refinish a wood door. It is a good DIY project.

It is easiest to pull the hinge pins to put the door on saw horses so you can work on it. (Can be done in place but easier not too)

I don’t like caustic strippers and have found latex paint strippers are just as effective. Apply the coat with a cheap throw away brush and let sit for about 15-20 minutes making sure to keep wet by applying more stripper.

With a putty knife start removing the layers of old paint. Be careful not to gouge the wood. For any designs in door use steel wool or stiff brush to get in the crevices.

It will probably take a few coats to break all the old paint loose since so many coats of paint. Once all the old paint is off you can rinse the door back down with the water hose. This is the true advantage of a latex stripper.

Hang it back in place letting it dry a couple days. Sand the door as needed and recoat with a Marine varnish. Marine varnish is perfect for exterior applications.

After about 3 coats of varnish you have your beautiful door back to its original splendor.

can you lay gravel onto a concrete patio/path?

concrete path/ back yard in need of refurb in my girlfriends flat. the concrete is about 6″ below exterior door sill. we dont have the time or money to break up the concrete. she wants to deck half and gravel the other half. i think the decking will work, but have reservations about putting gravel onto concrete. originally were thinking paving slabs, but concerned about the height into the damp course. any suggestions?

Aklymroofing answers:

You can do this but there are a couple of things to remember. You must have kerb edgings deep enough to contain the extra thickness of the gravel, without this the gravel will run off the path and disappear.

If the thickness is insufficient then the gravel can be very dangerous, they can move and become very unstable and slippery, a bit like a load of ball bearings, the gravel could roll on the concrete, when laid on soft ground this does not happen.

Can I place breaker box between wall and door?

if the distance between the wall and door is 2 feet, and the door is an exterior door that opens out? There will be no obstructions to the box from the inside.

Aklymroofing answers:

Minimum electrician left-to-right work space is 30″.
Minimum depth of work space is 36″.
No obstructions/obstacles in the work space.
Minimum work space height is 6’6″.
It can’t be on a staircase, in a closet, in a bathroom nor a few other odd places.
The door on the box must be able to open 90 degrees.

What should I get my gf for birthday/christmas?

She is a vegan (for health reasons) hippy (I call her this she doesn’t) Who rescues animals and lives off grid with no electricity or running water and a wood stove for heat. She’s building her own eco friendly house right now. She is a writer. Her birthday is on Christmas eve. I love her.

I bought her a used but nice exterior door. I bought her a guide for buying solar panels.

Any ideas on what else I should buy her?

Aklymroofing answers:

I think a wonderful gift would be a hamper full of little vegan goodies.
You can put anything and everything that is vegan in there such as chocolate, cookies, soaps, makeup, clothing, footwear, jewellery, cookbooks, and everyday items that interest her that are vegan or vegan friendly.

I love when someone takes the time to really put that extra effort into a present – especially hampers – it looks like multiple presents!

I’d start looking for these gifts now so you have them in time for Christmas Eve.
I’m sure she will love whatever you get her, remember it is the thought that counts.

Have a lovely Christmas!

Can you hang a door without replacing the jamb/frame?

In other words, can you just take the old door off the hinges and place the new door in its place? I noticed people always replacing the jamb and frame when they do this, but I just want to replace the door. It’s an exterior door that will have a doggy door.
How about doors that have glass? I don’t want to use a blank as it’s an exterior door that needs glass.

Aklymroofing answers:

Yes you can. You can purchase just the door blank, cut your opening for the pet door and install the hardware for that. Then because door blanks do not have the notches cut for the hinges you will have to cut them at the proper heights to fit the hinges you already have. Don’t forget that you need 1/8 to 1/4 inch gap at the top of the door when measuring. You will then need to drill and cut out the holes for your latch hardware, as door blanks do not have these ether.

Anyone used a Graco ‘Magnum DX’ paint sprayer?

I have to paint several rooms and will need to do it over a couple of days. The cost of renting a profesional sprayer would end up being similar to buying an inexpensive sprayer, which i could use for other projects. How well does this sprayer work?, coverage?
ease?. or any other sprayer suggestions.

Aklymroofing answers:

I have not used this particular paint sprayer, but I researched when I purchase mine last spring. Your project is probably a good enough reason to purchase a sprayer and I think the Magnum DX is a good choice. As I recall these are sold at The Home Depot and they have a chart which tells how to select a sprayer based upon use. But as I recall this one falls into the range you need. My experience with renting was that it cost me as much time to clean it up so that it would operate properly (because the person who had it before me did’t bother) as it did to do the actual painting and cleaning up may own mess.

When I was doing research, it appeared to me that there are just a few manufactures who market under different brand names and that the manufactures produce approximately similiar models.

These sprayer work very well and vastly increase your efficiency. For example, I completely primed the outside of my 1300 sq ft home in less than two hours and two coats of paint took less than four. I also completely painted the entire inside of a two floor two bedroom appartment in less than six hours. This did not include any of the prep work, just the painting, but it did include all the ceilings which were textured.

Coverage was great. I did find however that I liked using the 4-11 oriface the best. While it put out less paint, there was less mist in the air and fewer (almost no) runs.

Clean up is the biggest challenge but with the hose adapter it goes rather quickly. After running water through painter and hose, you would be wise to remove the filters and clean them individually. The better you clean it, the longer it will last between rebuilds.

I purchased a Zip Spray 1700 used and put in the kits necessary to make it spray properly and used it to paint three house exteriors, four fences and two appartment interiors and I expect it to run one more summer before I have to replace parts again.

Come to think of it, I believe Sherwin – Williams paint stores might sell their rentals. It might save you a few bucks. A friend of mine bought a Wagne Paint Crew, painted one house exterior and it was worn out, too small.

That’s about all I can tell you about my experience with these machines. Good luck!!!

Mary asks…

I have vinyl decking and I want to paint it a different color. What kind of paint do I use??

Aklymroofing answers:

With knowing the BRAND of composite deck material, but knowing TREX to be one of the first, though I hear complaints all the time,,,they have made improvements.

First of all consider that composition. Pretty much like MDF, or as I rudely like to say “GLIT”. Actually as it evolves it will hopefully replace the clear cutting of forests. It’s a great factory tour too BTW, should you ever get the notion.

To Paint it, and with all due respect to another answer, DO NOT use Latex.

Epoxy based paints and similar; specific to exterior use will NOT degrade the deck substance, and given a proper dry/cure time can last as long, and hold up as well as anything you could paint over concrete.

Your issue will remain however, in that being an exterior surface, subject to the environment and wear that any floor gets, you’ll likely have to maintain it.

While I totally understand someones desire to change a color, I may never understand it, as it regards a DECK no matter the material.

Bought new car and need advise on how to maintain my car?

I want to know about regular maintenance of the car like when to change engine oil, and what other parts need oil change, what to use to clean and to make shine and also please let me know what is “Wurth Coolant”?

Aklymroofing answers:

If its a brand new car it should be under warranty if so then leave the services and oil changing to the mechanics cause if you do it yourself you will void your warranty. If its not under warranty make sure you change the oil bout every 6 months dont by cheap oil, coolant the same deal dont have to buy the most expensive stuff but somthing decent, tyre pressure should be around 30-35psi i go 35. As for cleaning dont use armour oil for interior, i hear it makes cracks after long term use keep vacumed clean inside you be pimping. Exterior go out find a good soap and wax wash use good brands, then atfer dry with chimmy, then start waxing thats the hard part but your car will look dope after that, keep inside garage when not in use.only clean exterior when it really needs it, to much cleaning not good for paint job. Hope i helped

Donald asks…

What is emulsion paint?

I am trying a project found in Somerset’s new Workshop magazine. It requires the use of “emulsion paint“. The photo shows a tube called Matchpot. I can not find it on a website or in speciality crafts stores. Can anyone tell me what this is? From the research I’ve done it seems to show me store house paint. This doesn’t seem to be the same.

Aklymroofing answers:

Earlier today, I was trying to find the answer to this exact question for the exact same reason. My research indicates that what in the US is called “latex” paint (though it doesn’t contain actual latex) is in the UK called “emulsion paint.” The author/artist in Somerset that uses “emulsion” paint is British and Crown Matchpot is a British brand of house paint (interior and exterior). The artist does refer to it as “houshold” emulsion. The small tubes are test sizes so home painters can check out the shade without buying a big can first. As she notes, it’s an inexpensive way to get a variety of colors, and she favors pastels, which are more common in interior housepaint.

Behr and True Value sell small samples of latex/emulsion, 8 and 4 ounces respectively, in jars. True value says 4 ounces will cover 4 square feet — used as sparingly as it is in the Somerset article, they’d go a long way. Behr can be ordered online for $6.95 at http://www.behr.com/behrx/workbook/(click on “Start Colorsmart” for palettes).

Do note that for fine art purposes, housepaint will flake off canvas after a while, and should be coated with shellac or similar, and even then will not age well. Rothko’s paintings have faded badly over the years for this reason — he couldn’t afford oils for his huge canvases. I’ve avoided it for canvas for this reason.

However, for altered art, emulsion/latex should work well as long as it’s kept out of sunlight. I plan to try it!

Glad to know I wasn’t the only one puzzled by this!

Nancy asks…

Can one paint vinyl shutters for outside and have the paint last a long time, and not chip?

Aklymroofing answers:

Yes you can paint the vinyl shutters so they last for years. The most important step is for the vinyl to be very clean. Scrub with a good detergent and rinse well. Then you may paint the shutters with 100 percent acrylic exterior paint(spray gives the best finish but brushes may be used too). There are some brands of paint that advertise they work fine on vinyl. You can do a search for the brands. The vinyl will expand and contract in sunlight so a light color will be the best choice for the shutter color as it will not absorb as much of the sun’s heat.

Doing a wall mural in babies bedroom, what paints are best to use?

I am doing i Winnie the Pooh wall mural in my babies room. What kind of paints would be best to use? I keep hearing Acrylic paints would be best, but then some say just regular interior wall paint would be fine too.

Aklymroofing answers:

You can use acrylics and/or actual latex wall paint. I do tons of murals and I use house paint. Exterior paint for outside murals and interior for inside murals. I often buy the returned or improperly colored paint from Lowe’s and home depot (it’s usually very cheap). I tint it with acrylics if needed. Home Depot and Lowe’s also sell small cans of bright colors of paint that I use to tint.

What colors should I paint my cabin?

I own a 700sq foot cabin – it does not stand very tall (12′ to peak) and has a enclosed front porch… sits in tall hardwoods and small pines.

Currently is painted chocolate brown completely – but needs new paint .. suggestions?

Aklymroofing answers:

You might find a leaf of one of the trees surrounding your cabin, and take it down and have paint mixed to match.

We live in an oak forest. We took an oak leaf down and had exterior paint matched to the leaf. Our home looks compatible with the forest, very non-invasive.

Thomas asks…

can I use acrylic paint for an outdoor project? I’m painting an outdoor wooden figurine for Thanksgiving?

I already primed the wood with white exterior latex base. I will also seal it with an outdoor clear varnish. Just wanted to know if I can paint the colors and details with acrylic paint. Thank you!

Aklymroofing answers:

Sounds as though you are doing good so far. Acrylic paint would be ideal. Use artist grade paints like Liquitex™ or Golden™ and seal it with a varnish made for acrylic paint. Not hardware store varnish. Golden™ makes several types, all of which contain Ultraviolet filters.

How to make a steel exterior door appear distressed?

I have a craftsman style home that has a bland steel door. I’m wanting to paint it a bright fun color, but I also want to know if there is a way to create the distressed look on steel. Any suggestions or links to a DIY?

Aklymroofing answers:

True craftsman houses did not have fun color painter doors. They had wood. I have one, and I also have a steel door. I faux painted it to look like quarter sawn oak, and it has fooled loads of people.

I used gel stains, a graining tool and paints.

Here’s directions for faux painting: http://www.paintinganddecoratingconcourse.com/Faux-Painting.html

How to remove the driver’s side door panel on a 2004 Hyundai Tiburon?

Hello,

My power window has slipped its track and my boyfriend is attempting to fix it, but we are unable to get the door panel to come off. We have gotten all of the screws off other than the grab handle. We know theres a screw behind it but we are unsure how to take it off without breaking it. My car is a 2004 Hyundai Tiburon. Please help!
Thanks, we were able to get it off and it probably is the regulator. It is still making noise so we figured it had just slipped the track. Taking it to the shop tomorrow.

Aklymroofing answers:

The power window motors are common failures on the Tiburons. Both sides went on my 2003 Tiburon. I got them both replaced under the warranty when I had the car, yours is out of warranty now of course. Hyundai will warranty the repairs and labor for one year after the date performed so be sure and always keep your vehicle records from the Dealer.

What color should I paint my room?

I’m moving into a new room soon and it needs to be painted anyway (it got a little moldy because the washing machine broke upstairs)
So its rectangular with big windows on the long side and the door on the opposite side. The windows face east, so lots of sun in the morning but little in the afternoons.
Which color should I go for? I like anything!

Aklymroofing answers:

What about a rose pink or a seafoam green?

Or a light blue and brightish yellow??

Chris asks…

I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and suddenly with no warning the powered windows will not come down ?

No power is coming to the drivers side control panel. Windows will not work, outside mirrors will not work, interior lights stay on after vehicle is shut off, dash lights are very dim. Checked all relays and fuses found all working properly. Does anyone have any suggestions.

Aklymroofing answers:

It sounds like the bundle of wires that go from the A pillar on the body, through a “tunnel” into the drivers door has a short. Nasty job sometimes. All the wires need to be unbundled and the short located. I’m surprised some fuse or circuit breaker hasn’t tripped though. You can get access to this bundle, usually through the kick panel in the driver’s footwell and just move those wires around in the bundle carefully and see if the power returns even intermittently. Good luck. Nasty job.

How much would a 1500 sqft concrete house would cost to build?

Nothing fancy, basically a concrete rectangle with windows and doors.

Aklymroofing answers:

Around $55 per sq ft if you use ICF forms. The ICF or Insulated Concrete Form will stack like legos and remain in place after the pour. They have strips embeded for attaching drywall inside and siding outside. 2 People is all that is needed and very few tools. Eco Block, ARXX, Logixx are a few along with TriTex. Cost per block is around $12 and they are 5.33 sqft and various thickness depending on your needs. So a 35×43 house would need 234 blocks and about a ton (lift) of rebar, and require roughly 33 cubic yards of concrete using an 8 ” core thickness. Concrete should be figured around $100 per yard by the time you figure in a pump or conveyor truck to ease install. Hope this helps

Honda Civic 2000 2 door. My drivers side window doesn’t close all the way. ?

Honda Civic 2000 2 door. My drivers side window doesn’t close all the way. I took the door apart and seems to be that the rubber part is folding over in the window, so the glass is not sliding between the two but binding up instead. Where can I find that part, just the rubber part not the whole window regulator or motor kit.

Aklymroofing answers:

This rubber piece is called window run channel, alot of time you can put it back in place and lube it with wd40 so window slides easy, you might have to remove mirror to get it in place or replace it.you can only get from dealer or out of a junk car. Its also possable that window regulator is no good they get messed up from trying to force window up

Can we use exterior satin paint inside?

We accidentally bought 3 gallons of exterior satin paint – we wanted interior paint. Can we still use it? It will mainly be in closets and on shelves.

Aklymroofing answers:

I advise against it because exterior paint is not made for interior use. . . Anybody that tells you otherwise has no business advising on what they don’t really know.

Exterior paint is a completely different base and doesn’t offer the same durability/scrubability and durability for interior spaces and living that the interior formula does.

Mark asks…

does a condo assciation have the right to charge extra for exterior repairs because there budget is running?

low. i pay 250 a month for maintenance and they want to add on extra 40 to help with exterior painting and fixing roting wood is that legal or am i only responsible for the interior care and the assciation must take care of the outside without charging extra

Aklymroofing answers:

Perfectly legal – check your bylaws and you will probably find a clause in there about when and how the HOA can raise the dues.

What is a fair, average price, for exterior painting, per square foot, in the Southern U.S. ?

This would be based, figuring all prep work, including pressure washing, minor scaping, and caulking. Also, using enamel paint, provided by the client.

2.75 – 3.00 a sq ft

Nancy asks…

How much wood paint do I use?

I’m going to be making 6 wood benches for a project, and the organization I’m doing it for wants it coated in with wood paint. In total, I’m painting 108ft of 4×6 Douglas Fir wood with 2 coats of water based exterior wood paint (paint is what the organization wanted).
I have limited experience painting lumber and any help is very much appreciated!

And I know wood stain is usually better than paint, but the organization wants paint.

Aklymroofing answers:

You will need 1-2 gallons of paint. Here is why:

The boards are (20 inches) 1.67 feet around x 108 feet long. So to get the square footage you are painting 1.67 x 108= 180.36 square feet. One gallon usually covers about 200 square feet.and you are doing two coats.

Now that can vary due to certain factors. How thick do you want the paint to be? How dry is the wood ? How smooth is the wood? How hot is the day?

In a perfect world a gallon of paint covers about 400-450 square feet but it’s not a perfect world and this is douglas fir which sucks up paint.

Buy two gallons and if you don’t open the second gallon just return it and get a refund. However I think you will need to tap into it.

How can I sell my house in a short period of time?

We have a house close to downtown St. Paul, MN. We would like to sell and relocate very soon, our house is valued at about $190,000. It is a duplex on a corner lot with a driveway and a garage. The house does need a little work. We are looking to sell for somewhere about $165,000 within the next two months. Does anyone have any advice?

Aklymroofing answers:

There are allot of factors to consider when trying to sell quickly. If your house was valued at 190,000 that doesn’t necessarily mean it will sell for that. But, take a look at the market immediately surrounding your property and see what similar properties are selling for, properties similar in size, make sure you are looking at other 2 family homes, and properties that are similar in condition. Notice what the average DOM (days on market) for these properties are. For example, if similar properties are selling on average for 180K after 60 DOM consider listing yours for 165K if you really want to move it quickly. Also, a small amount of cosmetic work can go a long way! Make sure the interior is neat and clean, slap on some fresh interior paint, and make sure curb appeal is desirable by keeping the yard manicured, and free of any trash or other debris, touch up exterior trim paint if necessary. Small improvements like this can make a huge difference to a buyers first impression, it gives them a sense of how the property has been cared for. Hope this helps.

What kind of paint should i use for my dog’s house?

I want to paint my dog’s wooden (plywood) house, what kind of paint should i use, i’ve heard i should use oil paint for the exterior, but what kind could i use for the interior? Could plywood harm my dog’s respiratory system?
ok, then should i leave the interior unpainted?

Aklymroofing answers:

Any latex based exterior paint will be fine. I doubt there’s anything in plywood that would be harmful for your dog, as we use it in our homes

Linda asks…

Can a decorator charge extra after agreed quote has been paid?

A quote, which included a detailed breakdown of materials and labour, was agreed to paint the exterior of my house. It stated that the work would take 8 weeks, weather permitting. After a very wet summer, it has taken an additional 6 weeks to complete the work and the rain ruined a lot of the paintwork which had to be done again. I paid for the work agreed but have now received a substantial extra bill for additional time and materials. Do I have to pay?

Aklymroofing answers:

Usually the difference is in the definition of “Quote” or “Estimate”.

Best to look at fine print, if it was a quote then normally he is required to present a “change order” or “additional work order” at some time before proceeding with the additional work.

Even most “quotes” have a clause exempting unforeseeable conditions, these conditions still require change orders, and arguing bad weather as an unforeseeable condition is week.

David asks…

What is the first step to building a house?

A couple years from now i plan to build a house, I know it sounds weird but whatever. Can someone please help we with telling me what I have to do before building it. It will be like any other regular house, maybe like 2-3 rooms. Hope that information helps about the size. Please help me.

Aklymroofing answers:

Step 1
Home Design
Wether you select an already existing Homes plan or decide to design a home from scratch your plans need to fit your block and your budget which means getting contour surveys, engineering reports and a quote.
Step 2
Finance
Once you know what it is you wish to build, you’ll need to work out how you are going to finance it. There are a number of options of how you can do this. Contact your bank to find out if you qualify for OWNER BUILDER finance!
Step 3
Owner Builders Course & Registration
You’ll need to get your owner builders licence and register with the Builder’s Registration Board.
Step 4
Council Approvals
You will supply a list of material to council for approval of a Building Permit. You might make some small changes to comply with council requirements during this stage.
Step 5
Construction Program
Working with your representitive, you will design a construction program with a list of trades and suppliers in the order of when you will require their services.
Step 6
Site Preparation
You need to make sure you meet all requirements such as signage, storage, access for work vehicles, vegetation removal etc…
Step 7
Profiling
This is where your site is marked out exactly where your new building structure will go using string lines and pegs.
Step 8
Slab or Floor System Preparation
Depending on what type of house and land you have to build on will depend on what slab or floor system you will require. Each has its own preparation requirements outlined.
Step 9
Council Inspection
After preparation you are required to confirm that your efforts so far meet council regulation. You will also need to check to your own satisfaction that issues such as drainage and termite protection have been given proper attention.
Step 10
Concreting of Slab or Floor System
Call the boys in the big trucks because it’s time to make progress! Getting your foundations in place is a great feeling of accomplishment in the beginning stages of the building process.
Step 11
Wall Frames
Just like building a big Lego toy; you just mark out where the walls go on the slab or floor system and put them all together.
Step 12
Roof Trusses
There are many different roof types and the process differs depending which your home adopts.
Step 13
Roofing
Fibreglass insulation blankets will be laid over the roof battens and your roof covering will go on. You’ll also confirm that the roof is waterproof by fixing flashings and ridging. Step 14
Eaves and Gables
Depending on if you’re using Hardiplank cladding or Brick Veneer on your home depends on the procedure you’ll adopt to frame up eaves and gables.
Step 15
Services Contractors
You’ll call your plumber, electrician, TV and telecom pre-wire contractors to run pipe and cabling in your frames.
Step 16
Doors and Fittings
Doors, windows and other fittings are installed such as roller door reveals, sisalation foil to exterior wall and gable ends.
Step 17
External Cladding
Fix Hardiplank/Weatherboard or Lay Bricks to exterior of the structure and fix veranda ceiling sheets where required.
Step 18
Internal Linings
Gyprock linings to cover walls and ceilings are fitted, plumber is employed to connect bath and shower trays and all joints are set and cornices installed.
Step 19
Mouldings
Window and sliding door architraves, internal doors, skirtings, timber supports in cupboards and shelving is installed.
Step 20
PC Items
Kitchens, sink tops, vanity units and laundry tubs and any other cabinets are installed.
Step 21
Tiling
Floor tiles, wall tiles and splashbacks are laid as required.
Step 22
Plumbing
Plumbing contractor will finish plumbing and wastes. Check and complete all roof flashings and complete drainage including septic where required.
Step 23
Painting
Complete painting of external and internal walls of your home.
Step 24
Electrical
Electrical subcontractor completes lights, switches, plugs, stove, range hood, hot water system and external lights.
Step 25
Final Inspections
Call for your final inspection! And clean up and lay down carpet, vinyl, paths and drive ways, landscaping, turf and fences… And maybe even a pool?

Good Luck

i want to paint my vinyl siding and i heard to use either acrylic paint or a mix with urethane?

any ideas if this will work. also would it be possible to paint with a spray gun machine like a dewalt? will this work or is there a rental one i could get that will work better or do i use good old fashioned brush.

Aklymroofing answers:

I am a painter by trade and I all ways use BEHR Premium Plus Ultra for exterior painting. It has a primer in it that will last longer than your house. Make sure you clean the surface well. I would power wash it. I would use Glidden Gripper Primer first because it will stick to the vinyl well. If you do not use the behr premium plus. The regular behr exterior paint will work very well to as long as you use the glidden primer first. If you cut corners you pay for it big time later. When using the primer put on one thin coat. That’s all you need. The top coat works best with two thin coats than one thick coat. People use way to much paint. If you have any more questions I can tell you a lot more about saving time and using the right tools. Mhoddy@yahoo.com

What can I use to decorate my model house?

I have to build a model british styled house out of floam board. However, what can I use to decorate the outside. (I need to make windows, doors, ETC.)

Aklymroofing answers:

Here ae some links for you to look at. What you can do is to pick what you like and enlarge it and paste it to your house. Since the house is to be british style the siding I picked out to look at would be stone and you can also pick it and enlarge it enough times to make the siding. I hope these will help you.

How much would it cost to frame a door?

I live in Amarillo, TX– the closest larger city is ABQ, NM. I want to cut an outside door where an existing window is now. The door will exit my bedroom and enter onto a flat roof where I want to build a deck. Can any of you give me a guestimate on how much it would cost to cut the door, rip out the window, frame the door, install a door (excluding the price of the door), and repairing any damaged drywall. I will paint the drywall, and hang the door.

Also, is there anything I need to know to make this job less expensive? For example, would a certain sized door, or type of door make it less expensive?

Aklymroofing answers:

As a contractor in Ohio, I would give an estimate of around $500-$700. This price would include all materials to install the door and finish off the interior, minus the price of the door and painting. Now you have to think about the exterior. Do you have siding, stucco, ect. That would also have to be repaired. If you have never hung a door, I recommend letting a pro do it. Price doors at your local home improvement store. Being that the door is off a bedroom, I recommend an insulated door, it will pay for it self in the long run. Also, get a quote from atleast 3 contractors. Go with the one you feel is the most compitent to do the job, and get referances!

How do I replace the Drivers Side power window switch?

i have a 2001 Monte Carlo and my drivers side power window switch is bad, how do i replace it? does the cover snap off or do I have to take off the entire door panel? please any help would be appreciated? the more detailed the better

Aklymroofing answers:

Are you sure it is the switch? Usually the motor or gears go out. Or a fuse but that usually means all the power windows go out. You normally have to remove the door panel. Although it differs from model to model, there is usually a screw or two in the armrest / handle and the surrounding snaps out. Finally you usually push in and lift to get the panel off of some hooks.

Is there a good online floorplan and elevation creator?

I’m looking for something to create a floorplan (above design of a room or building, kinda like a blue print) and elevation (side view of each wall showing details like window and door frame dimensions) with. The old-fashioned way is simply to draw it, but my drawing skills are very sub-par to say the least.

Aklymroofing answers:

If you can use AUTOCAD application, you can save time and cost on your papers. If you dont know, just ask somebody who knows. Mostly students of engineering and architecture kwow about this and they are very good on it. In 2 to 3 days, they can give you what you want.

How do i remove a 1997 Honda Civic LX door panel?

The drivers side rear window is off track and i dont know how to remove the door panel in order to look at the mechanics AND i dont know what to do even when the door panel is off. and ideas help. Thanks!

Aklymroofing answers:

Yo ulook for screws on the door panel and remove them next you take a screw driver and pop the clips out slowly these clips hold the door panel on the door so becarful no to break them after that role your window up and down to see what is wrong and then do your best to fix the problem good luck for the door locks and window buttons there is a place where you just pry the buttons out of the door the whole panel it comes out of the arm rest and the other part is the lock part undo the screw and figure out how it comes off somtimes you might have to turn it side ways it is common sense really just try not to break it.

How to get rid of an ant infestation?

I just don’t know what to do. It started out in my room, but I found the source and were able to stop them. Thats when they found the pantry. They seem to be endless, and we can’t find out how they’re getting in the house. We can’t poison our entire house and the windows and doors outside of it, because we have pets of our own and neighborhood pets to watch out for as well. Is there any way I can ant proof my home safely, to a point where they’ll never come in again?

Aklymroofing answers:

I had some ant problems and tried using the spray stuff that puts a layer of “protection” around your house and it didn’t work at all. What finally helped me out was using a little bit of Terro ant killer. It’s a gel that you put out for them to eat, and ants love the stuff! They would swarm the little drops that I put out for them, but that was the last time I ever saw ants in the house.
I’d definitely recommend the product to anyone else. Also, just make sure you’re keeping up with the regular protection once the problem is gone: always sealing food packaging, never leading food out, etc. (I would keep my syrup bottle in a giant zip-lock bag since the syrup would always run down its side).

How to replace a rear quarter car window?

My husband locked his keys in the car at his job-site, so he had to break a window to get them, as it would have been too far for me to drive so late with both kids. (It’s the driver’s side, rear quarter window on a 2004 Malibu Classic)

Is it really worth taking to the dealership to get this replaced? Considering the window is stationary, it looks like you just need to take the interior of the door off and slide it up in there. I know we could find a replacement window at a junkyard, or even off ebay, that would be way cheaper, and we wouldn’t have to pay for labor.

Aklymroofing answers:

Any glass company can do this for you because of the special tools and apoxy needed to secure the window and its not that expensive either, make a few calls and get some estimates

Sandra asks…

how do i remove the door panels on a 1974 camaro?

my passenger side door lock is messed up and in order to fix the problem i have to get the door panels off. whenever i remove all the visible screws the panels are still fastened to the door. are they clips that are holding it on that i need to be careful not to break? any other details would be appreciated.

Aklymroofing answers:

I’m assuming you’ve got the window crank and armrest off already? There are hidden snaps on the backside around the edge of the panel. Gently pull the panel away from the door shell, when all the snaps are loose pull up on the panel to get it loose from the window channel. Some snaps may break, but you can still get them at NAPA or someplace like that.

How much would it cost for a custom paint job on a car?

I own a 1995 Dodge Neon, I was wondering how much an auto paint place would charge me for a custom paint job. Like for example, if I want the entire car painted green with some pictures on it. I have a feeling it’s really expensive since I rarely see people driving around with custom paint jobs. Anyone know how much they are? I heard they were like $2,000 on up. Thanks.

Aklymroofing answers:

You are asking a very broad question. No offense, but it is like asking”how long is a string?” It all depends. What sort of shape is your current paint job in? Did you desire a two stage or three stage green color for the main color. Did you want a metallic or pearl? Maybe candy apple? What “pictures” do you have in mind? With “art work” the price starts going out of control. Really depends on the time your air-brush artist needs to spend on your project. How about extra coats of clear? Maybe color sanding and polishing to make it look a mile deep? Do you want the door jams, inside the trunk and engine openings matched to the outside color? There are many questions to be answered by you.

In most of the shops that I am familiar with, $2000 will get you a nice, exterior only, same color as stock, paint job.You would benefit by sitting down with your self and deciding exactly what you want. Next you will need to find a reputable shop that is capable and willing to perform the work you desire. This is the most important part! You will want to look at examples of the work the shop has done. If possible talk to others who have had custom work done at your prospective shop. Don’t settle for anything but the best you can find. If not, you will be unhappy right up to the point where you sell your green Neon, for less than it is worth.

I hope this info is helpful. Happy Motoring!

Iam going to the garage i’ll be right back with a number for you to call ok sorry no numbers to call on can but about lead paint so you are going to have to call your local Sherwin Williams and get a 1-800 number i looked on both interior and exterior cans nothing. Look i do faux and marble painting also so try this i seen this on some post at a theater in N.O where the colums where made to look like cooper faded into that green tint your looking for on the stage. Try a bronze tinted paint after it drys dry brush strink it with the light green and it looks good if you dont find what you are looking for.*

William asks…

What’s the best way to scrape exterior wood for repainting?

I have an old addition with wood ‘siding’ that is peeling quite a bit. What’t the best and easiest DIY way to scrape the peeling paint and prepare for the new paint? My intent is for appearance, not necessarily for durability over time, since I’m not keeping the addition for long.

Aklymroofing answers:

Some of the above answers will get some of the paint off. (spraying a house with bleach does not remove paint. It does remove mold, and make sure you clean the bleach before painting) If you use a pressure washer, it will only remove what wants to come off, and leave bumpy spots of paint. These will show when you paint over them. If you paint over a bump, all you do is change the color of the bump.

Since your not keeping the addition long, scrape first, with a good scraper made for the job (will save you a lot of work) that you can get at a paint store. Don’t get one that looks like a putty knife, get one with a two handles. After you scrape, you need to pressure wash. This will remove the remaining loose paint, and clean the debris before painting. If you are not painting a flat sheen paint, prime prior to painting.

If you want to really do it right, there are a couple ways to remove the peeling. One is using a heat gun and scraper. The other is using chemicals with peeling sheets. You apply a sheet of material to the wall, and let it set, then pull off the paint. Both are very time consuming.

Donald asks…

Can you paint a garden shed that is made from Zincalume?

The garden shed we are after does not come in Colourbond anymore – is it possible to paint the Zincalume? Or does anyone know of a company that makes sheds to order? Everything online seems to lead to the same handful of manufacturers… Thanks!
Oh yeah, we are in Melbourne!

Aklymroofing answers:

If you let us know where you are, we may be able to help with a shed supplier.

It is possible to paint it… Here are the details.

Exterior Roofs: Zincalume, galvanised steel usually ‘corrugated iron’

Surface preparation:

1. Zinc and galvanised steel – Zinc is a reactive material which will corrode to basic zinc carbonate normally, and mixed with basic zinc chloride in coastal areas. The form of the corrosion product is not protective.

Coating of the metal is recommended as soon as possible, definately within four weeks. Washing with detergents and/or emulsifiable solvents is all the surface preparation that is necessary.

Even though the surface is cleaned initially, it cannot be overstressed that roofs in particular need washing down prior to each day’s painting, if there is any danger of wind blown salt depositing on the surface. Where corrosion has taken place this must be carefully removed, leaving behind as much of the remaining protective zinc layer as possible. Wet abrasive removal is recommended.

2. Zincalume – is a blend of aluminium and zinc, and behaves predictably somewhere between the two. Although it is much more corrosion resistant than zinc, it is still recommended that it is painted as soon as possible after careful cleaning with Resene Roof Wash and Paint Cleaner.

To wash down, mix one part of Resene Roof Wash and Paint Cleaner with three parts of fresh water. Apply a liberal wash of this mixture to the surface with a nylon bristle brush or broom. Thoroughly scrub the surface to ensure complete removal of all grease, dirt, dust, flaking paint and other contaminants. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water and allow to dry.

First coat:
Wind blown salts on the metal surface, and between coats cause premature corrosion. Always wash the area to be painted with fresh clean water before commencing work. For new work apply one coat of Resene Galvo-Prime.

How about a gf-14 exhaust fan for my 20X20 garage? I just need the garage to be comfortable when i’m in there.

my garage is attached to the house on the west side facing south. it has no windows and a door on the west end. the water heater and ac unit is located in a closet on the north end. i bought a evaporator unit but it really doesn’t do anything a big regular fan would.

Hello crow4435:

You can use an exhaust fan on the ceiling, and cut an opening in one of the walls of the garage and place the evaporative cooler in front of that. This will create cross-ventilation and cool off the garage a little. You might also consider insulation on the garage to reduce heat-gain.

How do I remove the Front Drivers Side door panel of a 2001 Sentra?

Im trying to replace the window regulator so any help on that topic would be much appreciated.

Aklymroofing answers:

If it has door handles, arm rests, door pulls, or window knobs they have to be removed first. Then take a thin blade, like a dinner knife or screwdriver, slide it down between the door and the panel. Get your fingers in and pull quickly. It snaps into a hole in the door. There may be 10 or more of these. Try not to bend the panel too much or it will warp. It’s cardboard behind the upholstery. Then to reinstall it just pops back in.

Sharon asks…

Can I replace the passenger side front window motor with a motor from one of the back windows?

I have a 98 intrigue. I’m wondering if the window isn’t just off tract, it rolls down and back up but wont roll up all the way and leaves a huge gap. However, if I’m wrong and something needs to be replaced, can I pull the part from one of the back windows?

Aklymroofing answers:

The motors will interchange, and some window regulators are made so that they can be interchanged with ease and others are not. I will admit I am not familiar with the Intrigue, but I have worked on about four other cars with window problems. I have found it easier to just get a replacement assembly, either from a salvage yard or car parts place. I have tried half way fixes (jury rigging the parts back together), swapping motors only and many other solutions. The most cost effective solution I have found is to just get the complete assemble (regulator with motor) from a salvage yard. This solution is also time effective because I know that all I have to do is take the door apart once and not have to two doors or go running for additional parts.
Please get a manual on repairs so that you know what you will need tool wise and how to take a part the door with out breaking something else. The auto-zone site might have an on line manual to look at or there may be a forum for Intrigues that will provide details on how to do the repair.
If you choose to go the salvage yard route, try this link: http://www.car-part.com/. You might want to call salvage yards in your area too because some of the yards do not keep the internet search engine up to date.

How do I roll up an drivers side automatic window in an 01 Nissan Altima?

Something is stuck in the motor and I just need to get the window up until I can get it fixed. I heard a grating sound and then it just stopped and won’t roll up anymore. Help.

Aklymroofing answers:

You’ll need to remove the door panel, plastic liner, possibly unbolt the window from the regulator. Move the window up by hand and possibly wedge something under it. Or install hose clamps on the guides under the window to hold it up. Most likly needs a new regulator assembly.
