Helen asks…

How do you install a car window?

The car I’m working with is a 1990 Mazda MX-6. It’s the driver side window.

Aklymroofing answers:

Take off the inside panel, look at whats there, there should be some sliders that the window sits in.. You may have to pull some pins but the window should pull out if you roll it down most of the way and pull up on it.. It goes in and out from the same place it rolls out of.

Mark asks…

How did my car window get a rectangular hole?

While driving down the road today, I heard a crash and looked back to see a hole in my minivan’s side window. Interestingly, the hole was almost a perfect rectangle. I suspected someone had thrown a brick — but I didn’t see anybody, there was no brick in the car, and the shattered glass that came inside the car dropped directly below the hole (i.e., it didn’t get blown into the car with any force). A cop who saw the damage said it didn’t look like a brick hole to him, and also said that he would expect to find a brick inside the car if someone had thrown one.

There was no other car near me at the time. The temperature was not extreme either inside or outside of the car (about 70 degrees both places).

Is it possible for defective glass to simply “fail” in such a way that it leaves a rectangular hole? What are the other possibilities?

Aklymroofing answers:

The glass takes a lot to break it and whatever hit it probably deflected off.

Sharon asks…

Will filing a claim for broken car window raise my insurance payments?

I woke up to a broken driver side window this morning and the first thing i do is call my insurance to ask if its covered. My insurance said it would cost 350 bucks to fix it and i have a 500 deductable so i gta pay out of pocket anyway. He scheduled an appointment for me to get it fixed at a local shop. Is this claim going to affect my rates?

Aklymroofing answers:

Check the details on your policy. It should not increase your premiums but you may lose your ‘no claims bonus’ which in turn could increase your payments !!!

Donald asks…

The toolbar on my computer went from horizontal along the bottom to vertical?

Along the left side. Windows XP. I have NO idea how this happened. How do I get my toolbar back to the bottom of the screen? Thanks.

Aklymroofing answers:

Right Click on your toolbar, uncheck “Lock the Taskbar” then drag your toolbar/taskbar back to the bottom.

How do I prevent bubbling in exterior paint?

I have one 6″ x 6″ spot that repeatedly bubbles. I paint at times to avoid direct sunlight and in the correct temperatures. I avoid high humidity etc.

Aklymroofing answers:

Paint will bubble if there is trapped moisture behind it. You don’t mention what type of material the exterior of your house is so pay attention to any moisture build up on the wall. Make sure there is no water leaking on the inside of the wall, then prime and finish coat.

Linda asks…

Can you paint a metal exterior door?

Our front door doesn’t match our house. Can you paint it? What kind of paint would you use? Our house is cream colored brick with some beige siding and garage door is painted a dark brown and our windows are white? What color should I paint it?

Aklymroofing answers:

Can’t help you with the color, that is a personal choice. As far as painting it, no problem. I remove all the hardware (except the hinges).I then sand it lightly, remove any rust that may be there. Just to be safe, I use an oil based primer (Rustoleum is a good choice) and then finish with an oil based paint. I know people will say latex is just as good, and it is for wood, but metal is a different story.

Good luck.

Donna asks…

what is better rhino shield or uniglaze for exterior house paint?

Trying to decide if the huge cost of Rhino shield is worth it. It costs 5 times uniglaze which has a 15 yr warranty vs a life time.

Aklymroofing answers:

Dunno. What colors are they? Sometimes choosing the life time warranty is better because the Rhino shield might go out of style. But, if you’ll want you house to look better, than choose the more expensive one. But, it all depends on whats in your budget.

Laura asks…

How much should I charge per square foot to paint exterior of house.?

The house is about 4000 square feet and has wood siding 5″.

Aklymroofing answers:

As much you want

Paul asks…

Painting the exterior mobile home. Can I paint the outside of a metal trailer with flat exterior paint?

I plan to use semi gloss on the shutters and a flat exterior on the house itself. Thanks.

Aklymroofing answers:

I wouldn’t use flat paint especially outside ,you need gloss because when it rains the water will just slide off the trailer. If you use flat it will absorb the water.

What could be causing the window on my 1998 Plymouth Grand Voyager not to engage and lower/raise the windows?

Driver side window sometimes does not go down; the motor whines when the electric switch is engaged. With the aid of a screw drive pressing on the nub beneath the switch the window might go down. The passenger side window is also stuck (up or down). Thoughts? New window motor needed? Remove panel and see if electrical is at issue? Thanks for your inputs. Robert C

Aklymroofing answers:

You need a new regulator. An easy fix, though. You will most likely need to drill out the rivets, and replace them with very short nuts, and bolts; 1/4 inch is about the right size.

Daniel asks…

how do you get a medical exemption for window tint in the state of ohio?

the legal limit is 50% on front side windows. the rear side and rear window can be any. i have 20% all around and i was stopped by police and they gave me a warning. i was wondering how to get a medical exemption. do you have to get an affidavit or some certain paper work?

Aklymroofing answers:

Difficult to do as windows(automotive) already have UV coating on them. But if you have a valid medical condition, it may be possible.

Sharon asks…

Can anyone give me a rough estimate for a window tint job?

I live in New Jersey and drive a 2001 Ford Escape. I was wondering if anyone could give a rough estimate of how much it would cost to put 10% tint on my back side windows and my rear window. I’ve asked multiple companies and they say they need to see my car for an exact cost and I don’t want to drive all over Jersey when all I want is a rough estimate.
Thanks!

Aklymroofing answers:

I would think you could get it done for around $150.00.

But why only 10% tint. That’s nearly nothing. I would go with 35%, which I believe is maximum (legally) now

Paul asks…

What is the best quality wood sealer?

I have a deck that I want to seal and I live in a rainy climate. What is the best brand I can use, and can I just spray it on with a garden sprayer? I have heard that Thompsons is not a good one, but I dont know any other brands that are good or bad. Any suggestions?

Aklymroofing answers:

You heard right, Thompson’s is junk. It’s primary ingredient is parafffin. It sits on the surface and makes the water bead, but it doesn’t penetrate and does nothing to protect the wood. For more lasting protection, use a product such as Deckscapes from Sherwin-Williams. It’s available in oil or water based formulas, and in many finishes and colors. Here is a link that will show you the choices available. Hope this helps.

Sandra asks…

How much wall could 1 can of paint cover?

We need to paint an entire house (1824 sq. feet), but most of the house would be 1 color… so how many cans of paint would you need for 1 room? Like 11×11? Thanks a lot to all answers, and if you can recommend a good brand that crayon/smudges would wipe off of.
Some of the walls are white, off white, and then some are a burnt reddish orange (yuck lol)

Aklymroofing answers:

I am a 37 year exprienced painter and approxamately 350 square feet per gallon of a good paint..no need to prime the dark color with a speacial primer..just put on 2 coats of the paitn you intend to do the finish with..Here when you figure out the footage..add to the footage about 30% for the second coat, for it will take a little less on the 2nd coat..NOW..HERE IS WHAT IS IMPORTANT FIGURING OUT THE TOTAL.. The footage you are speaking of I bet is the floor footage and not the wall footage…So unless we know heigth of wall..how many walls, partitions, walk in closet walls etc…. It would be real hard to tell you..for one house per sya that is 2000 square feet , footage space could take 25 gallons..and the next 2000 square foot house could only take 15…this all depends on heigth and amount of walls…for example..a 10×10 room would be 100 square foot of floor footage, but you need to multiply this floor footage by 8 if it has 8 foot ceilings..so it would be 800 square feet of wall space that you would actually be painting there…2 gallons would paint this room sufficiently of good paint..if it was the darker color then add 35% which would be an additional 250 feet in material..so then 3 gallons would work well here , plus plenty to touch up..You will have to measure each room this way to get wall footage..measure each wall and partitions too…I just did some figuring..if you totalled up JUST the exterior walls, and they were all 8 foot ceilings , this would be 14,592 sq feet of wall footage..approx..5 1/2 gallons of paint..now without the inner walls it will increase..but the average house of that size I would start with 15 gallons..purchase in 5 gallon containers..then get more as you need..Me being a retired contractor would more than likely (not a spelling teacher as i see how bad i type) would go ahead and purchase 25 gallons if alot of walls..but I would use the extra later somewhere..as a home owner..I would start out with 15 gallons then get more as you need..it is cheaper when you buy it in the 5″s

where can i address my complaint letter to the President of Mitsubishi Motors, Phils?

My car is 2yrs, 4months old and I encountered serious problem on its trnsmission.I brought to Amcar, Phils but its still there for about 2weeks now. And they cant still assure when can i get my car back! I want to write a formal letter of complaint to the President of Mitsubishi motors. My car is a Montero Sports.

Aklymroofing answers:

Well I assure you that a lot of people have transmission problems with Mitsubishi Cars especially eclipses. Your not the only one who suffers like this. Everyday people suffers from broke down transmission and had to give up there car because it costs too much or it takes majorly long time to fix. Theres been reports about almost every problem of a Mitsubishi car from exterior painting to the engine to the transmission. Even if you do send a letter, they will still continue to produce the cars that they engineered, meaning they really don’t care. Also, that shop you took it to probably are inexperienced and they are probably having a hard time on it. I would check somewhere else that has the experience. I have already seen a 2009 Lancer transmission broke down already and its a brand new car with only 5000 miles on it. But it had a warranty that the dealer replaced it for free.

Donna asks…

Is it true that some car washes can ruin your car?

I have heard that going through an Esso or a petro Canada car was can destroy the paint on your car… Is this true? are these carwashes damaging for your Car exterior?

Aklymroofing answers:

Car washes that uses spinning brushes can scratch up your car’s finish if the brushes get dirty. Touchless washes are better for your car in terms of not scratching the finish…the problem is they usually don’t remove dirt as well because they’re touchless and can’t “wipe” the dirt off of the car.

So yes, it’s true it’s possible to damage your car’s finish in a car wash. However, saying that ALL of a certain station’s car washes damage cars is probably not accurate because most stations don’t use the exact same car wash technology from one station to the next even if they’re the same “brand” of station.

What colour scheme should I paint the exterior of this house?

http://i1170.photobucket.com/albums/r528/mistwiz007/houseatcoonambleandfamilyshots558.jpg
This is a house turned into 4 units. Was thinking a dark charcoal almost black colour for the walls. But what for the trim, roof and fence and doors? going for a more Contemporary look to freshen and modernize it. Names and brands of colours would be helpful. I live in Australia. Thanks

Aklymroofing answers:

Black? Are you kidding? That will look hideous.

The roof needs replacing, not painting. It is rusty.

A really popular colour combination being used at the moment is Colorbond colours “Woodland Grey” (roof, guttering) and “Dune” (walls). Paint the window frames white. This combo works really well and is very modern.

Dark walls will date very, very quickly and will only absorb heat. That house would be a sauna in the middle of summer with dark walls. You really should reconsider this colour choice.

nj medical exemption tint note?

i got a note from the dmv to legally have tint on my car. ive suffered from migraines for over 4 years (been hospitalized) and i need the tint because light can be a major trigger ect. on the note it says up to 60% for the tint which doesnt help me much since light will still be a problem due to the high percentage and the fact that that will only filter UV. i was wondering if anyone knew if thats a regulation for tint with the note or with another note from the dr if it could be changed to be darker. id appreciate any input. thanks!
cant wear glasses. the weight aggravates the migraines more.
i understand the reason for the law. thats not what im asking. and id prefer not to get into the law because i feel its ridiculous in and of its self. it should just require you to roll down your windows and turn on the interior lights. if you dont have an answer to the question then why bother to respond?

Aklymroofing answers:

If the tint gets much darker than 60% light transmittal … It will start interfering with your ability to see out of the car, never-mind an officer’s ability to see in!

You wouldn’t be thinking about putting darker than 60% tint on your windshield … Would you? I don’t think that would be allowed for safety reasons (low light conditions for most drivers would be virtually no light conditions for you.

You might get away with darker than 60% on the side windows … But that probably won’t help your migraines much if you are driving [you would have to look out the windshield!]

Donna asks…

Chance of getting into these colleges?

Hello reader,

My name is Alan and I attend a fairly average public school in NJ.
Let me give you a brief summary of my high school career/resume:

I am have selected highly challenging courses- I am the only junior in my year in AP Physics and AP Calculus BC, BUT my GPA isn’t that great, being around 3.6 or so (unweighted)- if you take out the fluff classes: Phys Ed, Band, etc. (Most of my grades are around B+, A- range)
I make the top 10% of my class with these grades and my classes (with my weighted GPA).

I have generally taken all the APs where I could, and Honors classes are the norm for me.
I hope to end high school with an unweighted GPA of 3.7.

I have above average scores on standardized tests, ACT/SAT1/SAT2s:
2300 SAT1
33 ACT
760 Biology E
800 Physics
740 Chemistry
800 Math 2

I am very involved in music (drum major and made it into auditions in my county- tuba, played piano for 13 years), involved in wrestling (3 years, 1 year varsity), and involved in my church (congregation of about 200 people, I lead worship regularly). I have also done 8 years of Tae Kwon Do (stopped in 9th grade), and two years of DECA.
On the down side to my extra-curricular life, I don’t have an amazing story of having created an organization to help the poor, writing a story that got published in the Record, etc., although those things would’ve been pretty cool to do/say.

Anyways, I was wondering if my challenging curriculum, scores on the standardized tests, and extra-curriculars would assuage the ‘average’ GPA, if I want to get into Ivy League/top-tier schools (Realistically, I know I wouldn’t make it into Princeton/Harvard/Yale).
But what would you say would be my chances of being accepted into schools such as Cornell? Johns Hopkins? Coopers Union? Brown?
Any input would be great, thanks!

Aklymroofing answers:

Since you are most likely doing your own schoolwork now and will be doing it in college, I’ll direct you to a reliable web site for you to conduct your own research on the universities that interest you and learn if you would qualify for admissions acceptance.

The College Board web pages, http://www.collegeboard.com/ has a great service providing info on how potential students compare to currently enrolled freshmen. The College Board publishes the well-respected College Blue Book series, manages the SATs, and offers a great search engine for finding potential scholarships, among other things (without the user ending up receiving a lot of spam email.)

Here’s the link to The College Board College QuickFinder. Just enter the names of one of the universities that interest you in the search box and click on the Find button. Then, click on the link to the university.
Added (sorry, I forgot to add this link earlier):
http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/search/index.jsp

The the main page with the univ. Info click on the Admission link for info on the univ. Look over the admissions info and then scroll down the page to the Am I On Track? Link and click on that. You can then fill in your info for a comparison of the high school course work you have completed/will complete. After doing that, click on the Back arrow on the window to the main page for the univ. Then click on the link for SAT, AP, CLEP. (It’s clunky, I know.) Read the info on that page and then click on the link for How Do I Stack Up? You will then see info on currently enrolled freshman and can compare your work to theirs.

If you opt to register (for free – again you won’t receive spam email), you can easily save and update your comparative info.

Best wishes

past idea i had. the first chapter.i stopped and started another story which is awesome what do you think?

Chapter 1
The rustling engines of a Boeing jet planes could be heard as they took off one by one. Travelers scrambling around the airport, luggages by their side looking for their terminals while some of them waited for their planes to arrive. Some Travelers could be seen holding their shoes and hurrying to their gates.”Now arriving at gate 32B Flight 343 from Lagos, Nigeria, for those of you waiting to board it would only take us a couple of minutes to deboard and get the plane ready, thank you for your patients” a female voice echoed through out the airport.

“Sir, how was your stay in New Jersey?” said the immigrations officer not making eye contact but looking at the computer screen.
“It was enlightening” replied the man on the other side of the bulletproof glass. There was a period of silence while the officer looked up his information on the computer and stamped the necessary documents. “Welcome to Los Angeles and have a good day Mr. Cypher” said the officer with a smile on her face which appeared to be forced. The man walked out of the airport dragging along one of those suitcases that has the retractable handle. Cypher walks up to one of the taxi cabs parked next to the sidewalk.
“Where to Sir?” said the cab driver in an African accent.
“333 Millbrook Road” replied Mr. Cypher as he closed the cab door.
“So Sir, How was your trip?” asked the Cab driver as he looks through the rearview mirror.
“It was a nice flight…you can call me Jonathan.”
“Ok Sir…i mean Jonathan, my name is Adebayo.” replied the cab driver.
“Hmmm that sounds like a Nigerian name” wondered Jonathan who was now looking outside of the window.
“Yes it is… have you been to Nigeria?” Adebayo said nodding his head
“Yes i have”
“Where you there for pleasure or for business?”
“was there for business” said Cypher with a smile appearing on his face.
“It turned out to be a really successful deal” he continued.
“That is wonderf–”
“I don’t think you should be taking that route,” said Jonathan cutting the driver off in midsentence “there is going to be a lot of traffic at this hour”
“Sir don’t worry i know where i am going” said the now offended cab driver.
“I think if you take 125 you will dodge the traffic” said Jonathan now looking at the cab driver.
“Ok Sir you are the boss” he said in a strong inflection.

“Is this your first time in L.A?” asked the cab driver who was surprised to find out that Jonathan was right about the traffic.
“No, i was born and raised here” replied Cypher “Do you mind turning that up?” He said refering to the radio which was playing a melodious classical tune by
Camille Saint-Saënswas being played.
Jonathan Cypher an averagely built caucasian with sky blue eyes who is in his twenties lived in L.A during most of his youth until the incident that changed the rest of his life. It was the second of March the third year of the twenty first century, Micheal Cypher, Jonathan’s Father was took him out to the park for a little father-son time. Jonathan Cypher who was thirteen at the time, was very into the game of soccer. He was raising the soccer ball into the air like a hacky sac while his father went over to the hot dog stand to get a little snack for both of them. As Jonathan kicked the ball into the air there came a shriek full of fear from the hot dog stand. Jonathan who was startled by the scream lost concentration and let the ball drop to the ground as he looked towards the direction of the scream. There where people scampering about the park as the air began to fill with fear. He looked towards the direction of his father who was now looking at him with a smirk on his face…

“Jonathan we have reached three hundred and thirty three Millbrook Road” said the cab driver looking at the house which looked like no one has lived in for years. The House on number 333 Millbrook Road was owned by Micheal Cypher which was passed down to his son during his demise. The house which had most of the front covered in glass that shun in the light as the orange red color of the house glowed. the fences around the house where made out of rocks with the number 333 on one of the rocks close to the stone steps.
“Here is your money Adebayo” he said as he opened the door to the taxi. “Keep the change”
“Thank you Jonathan, hope to see you around.” said the Adebayo as he stepped on the gas and drove off down the street.

The last time that Jonathan ever stepped foot into his house in Millbrook Road was when he was trying to pack most of his things to catch a plane out of Los Angeles to New Jersey. He was in a hurry and therefore left most of his valuable thing behind. When he opened the door to his house, the house was a mess. It looked like a mini-hurricane had passed through his house leaving the wall intact. The men that were looking for him might have found out where he lived and decided to pay him an unwelcome visit. Jonathan felt a chill down his spine just thinking about the men finding o

Aklymroofing answers:

Not bad – your writing is pretty good and well developed. I’m not interested in the story at all but that’s just personal preference; it’s just not a genre I enjoy, but don’t let that discourage you.

But there are a lot of inconsistencies here: jet engines don’t rustle – paper rustles; you wouldn’t go through immigration in an airport, it’s called customs and they officers are called Customs Agents; travelers wouldn’t have to go through customs from a domestic flight (NJ to Cali), only international flights.

Other then that, you’ve got a good start here. Keep at it!

Help this frustrated buyer!!!!?

I’m in contract w/ FSBO in NJ. Atty review is over & I had my home insp come. After his report, I found the home needs a new furnace, new water heater, new roof, attic doesn’t have proper ventilation and attic fan not working, water stains and large black mold and rusted nails throughout attic, bedroom door broken, side entry door rusted through and frame cracked, all windows need screens, loose electrical wiring, water stains underneath tub & slow drain on toilet, severe uneven kitchen header, mold area in basement, plumbing shoddily fixed, no permits were ever gotten from the town for any work the guy did, the shed outside is severely rotted, insulation needed in areas, there are no GFCI outlets…did I miss something?
I am so very very stressed. What can I do now? I want out.
The guy wants to just give me $2500. Thats nothing for what needs to be done. Laywers not helping too much. Anyone have suggestions! I need psychotherapy to survive buyin a house, I swear! :(

Aklymroofing answers:

Just dont close on the deal if you dont feel comfortable with it. Your contract should state that if for any reason you dont close, then the earnest money or deposit that you put down is all that the seller is due and that he cant force you to buy. Consider it a lesson learned and move on.

Have your own attorney review the contract to see what your out is.

You also might want to consider this as well. Most of the home inspection reports are written in such a way that it absolves the inspector of any responsibility and places the burden of making the decision on closing the deal on the buyer. In other words they try to cover every base and make every single possible issue a major concern so that you are aware of everything that could go wrong.

Have a licensed contractor or an experienced landlord take a look at the report and the house to make sure that the inspector isn’t making a major case out of normal wear and tear.

Tooth cavity discovered. Help please?

I told my dentist that my left front tooth has a hole in it, shes like ” Oh we did that already” Yeah the back side…. so now I have to tell my Parents ” I have to go to the dentist, I told her that my tooth has a hole in it but she didn’t listen*, ” the * Part is the part they aren’t going to believe and guess what, tooth drilling is alot of money…. and I need money for my clothes for School. FML right??? I might go to CVS tomorrow to get some tooth kits or something that Dental Pak thing. But idk if CVS has it, i looked up on the website nada. but ill check. And its starting to hurt… :( why do things happen to me like this.. Screw the goverment.. I’m afraid to tell my parents. I’m 14 btw. I really hate my life people… No I’m not depressed. I live in NJ so if that helps. What to do? NO i dont want to tell my parents. so any substitutes for filling? homemade? under 10 $. Please and Thanks!

Aklymroofing answers:

Ok calm down. You really need to tell your parents. Do your parents not have insurance? It should cover at least part of the expense. I know dental work is expensive but it is highly beneficial! If you guys are really in the hole I would suggest finding a dental school to fill the possible cavity. Its cheaper. These things happen to everyone, especially with the way the economy is right now. Just tell your parents, if they give a damn about your dental health, (which is basically the window to your overall health) they will have it fixed.

There has been talk of a breakthrough gel that gets rid of cavities, but I would never imagine it be under ten dollars. I am not even sure if they have it out on the market yet. Other than that there are no subs for fillings. Looks like you will need the drill sweety. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Just remember to brush and floss every day. You will become more proficient the more you floss. If you have big hands they have floss holders to make it easier.

How long to wait before painting over stucco repairs?

I’m having a contractor repair my stucco on the outside of our home. One long horizontal crack and a few patches. How long should I wait before applying primer and then painting? Also, I was going to use Porter Exterior Latex paint but should I use that elastic paint instead?
Tks

Aklymroofing answers:

You generally wait 30 days before sealing any kind of concrete and the stucco patches are concrete.

I don’t know about Porter, I’ve always used a water based exterior paint designed for stucco. You should match what was on the wall to begin with if you know what was applied.

Is exterior paint in the bathroom safe?

mold appeared again in the bathroom ceiling. If I paint the bathroom with exterior paint, the mold will not come back. But, is it safe? Will exterior paint damage the lungs? Is there anything I do, so the mold does not come back?

Aklymroofing answers:

Sounds like you need to remove the mold and likely the affected drywall
if you don’t eliminate it at the source it will still be there even if you can’t see it
there is likely a water leak somewhere
get it fixed…don’t try to hide it

I am wanting to start a small interior exterior painting business… just wondering if I legally need a license?

What type of white paint is the shiniest that I can use inside my room?

I’m painting my room white and the shiniest type of paint they have is exterior white paint, I heard that you could use it as interior but not the other way around. The interior only goes to semi-gloss, is that as high as it gets?

Aklymroofing answers:

Behr has high gloss interior

How do you re-paint a metal front door?

We have a metal front door where the paint is spotted and blotchy from age and sun. How would I go about re-painting it. Do I have to use oil based paint or is there an exterior latex paint? Do I need to sand or prime first? Thank you.

Aklymroofing answers:

You must put down a good coat of the proper kind of primer so that the paint will adhere properly. You should sand first and then clean off any dust from sanding.

You want a good quality paint so that it will last also. Get the best and do the job once, cheap out and you will do it again soon.

Why is the skin above my upper lip suddenly red and burning, and how can I get it back to normal?

I always put Blistex SPF 15 on the skin above my upper lip and the skin beneath my lower lip several times a day to keep them moisturized, and I have been doing so for several years. I woke up today, however, to find the skin above my upper lip (specifically the center and right side) to be very red and stingy. This has never happened to me before. I tried applying Blistex to the burning area but it only soothed for mere seconds, like when you lick your chapped lips when you don’t have lipbalm on you. I tried Vaseline, Neosporin, and several other medicines but none have changed it. Considering I live in NJ where it is very cold this time of year, could it possibly be dry skin? (I sleep with my window slightly open because the dry air of my heater irritates my throat) What should I do to soothe it back to normal?

Can I tan in UV 5 today?

Looking at the UV report, it says its potential maximum is 5. From 11:45pm to 2:15pm.

I’m pretty white and I need to tan. Can I get one if I lay down outside? And how long do you think it could take?
My sun-tan lotion is around 8-10 SPF too….in case that matters…

Aklymroofing answers:

If you’ve got a car window reflecting you, 4 hours.

You’ve pretty white, it could take shorter, unless you burn first.

Tanning comes & go, unless you do them everyday 24/7 for the rest of your life. But in the end the only thing you’ll benefit is either moles, freckles, skin tags or discolorations from sunscreens, lotions, etc. And the more you do, the more they get larger, darker & bumpier. My nephew had a membership in a tanning bed salon for a year. After it expired, he stopped, now he’s as white as before he began.

Tanning, is a result for ‘damaged skin’ and no products can reverse you from skin cancer or damaged skin, may prevent you from pre-mature aging, but that’s part of the billion dollar beauty industry.

Melanoma is the leading cause of death from skin disease. An estimated 76,259 new cases of skin cancer will be reported particularly among women in their 20’s & 30’s, and that’s 6,020 more than 2011, people died from the disease, according to the National Cancer Institute. Two million people are diagnosed with skin cancer in the US each year, according to the EPA’s Sun-Wise Program. That’s more than breast, colon, lung and prostate cancer cases combine!

Lotions does not protect you from nasty, painful burns. Lotions does not protect you from skin cancer. Lotions does not protect you from skin diseases. Lotions does not protect you from discolorations – permanently. And lotions does not protect you from skin tags, freckles, moles, they will only get larger, darker, and bumpier as they are exposed from UV.

To get the level of SPF you see on the label, you have to spread the lotion on like a layer of vanilla frosting; that’s the thickness used in Food & Drug Administration tests. “So your SPF 30 is really a 10.” says Steven Q Wang, M.D. Director of dermatologic surgery and dermatology @ Memorial Sloan-Ketterng Cancer Center in Basking Ridge, NJ and author of Beating Melanoma. David asks…

Should I file a complaint against this police officer?

My fiance and I were driving to Costco this past Saturday when I got pulled over. I was not speeding and we were both wearing our seat belts. We didn’t know why we were getting pulled over. When I pulled out my documents, I realized that I had forgotten to renew my registration. This was an unintentional oversight, and it was only a week expired. When the officer came to the window he confirmed that was reason he pulled me over. He asked if my insurance was up to date and I said it was. I gave him all my papers and he went back to his car. Two minutes later he comes walking back to my car and starts asking me if I smoke marijuana, and that he doesn’t believe that my insurance is current. I offered to pull up my bank statement on my phone so that he could see the debits from my checking account and he said no. Now, I am thirty years old, and while I won’t deny back in my college days I experimented, I haven’t smoked pot since then. He proceeded to tell me that the dust on my dashboard was marijuana residue and as I kept saying no he kept saying it has a greenish tint. By this time I have started crying. In the meantime another officer showed up and pulled my fiance out of the car. The first officer asked me, very nastily, why I was crying, and I said that I was crying because I was being accused of something that I didn’t do. Officer 2 now has his head in my car on the passenger side and screamed at me ‘no one is accusing you of anything b***h.’ After which I started crying even more. I kept insisting that it was just dust, and officer 2 said well not from where I’m standing I can smell marijuana.’ Then they ask if they can search the car. I say yes. I’m still crying as I get out of the car, and officer 1 says ‘with you crying like that, now I know you’ve got something to hide, you want to tell me what I’m gonna find in this car.’ I cry harder and sit on the curb. As I sit on the curb with my fiance trying to comfort me the officers look through my car, barely. I have papers stuffed in the pockets of the doors, they didn’t even take those out. They spent about two minutes tops looking in my car, didn’t even pop the trunk. After that they come to where we are sitting on the curb, and tell us to get back in the car. Officer 1 is at the window and says, ‘We didn’t find anything, but that doesn’t mean your not guilty. Maybe you smoked last night and there is something still left in the car.’ I am still crying and telling him that I don’t do that. Then he says that he’s not giving me a ticket for the expired registration and I can be on my way. Which after taking five minutes to calm down, we did.
Now I have never been through anything like this before. I don’t think that a few day expired registration is probable cause to make the leap to me being a pot head. My question is should I file a complaint against the officer? Here’s the thing though I didn’t get his badge number or name, as I was too shaken up. Oh and the town that this happened in is small, VERY affluent town, in northern NJ, that has a main highway through it.

is limo tint illegal in nj?

Aklymroofing answers:

According to Tintlaws.com you can not tint the windshield or front windows. The rear window and rear sides can be tinted to any darkness. Your best course of action would be to check with your DMV or State Police to see what is legal. Every PD is different and where one area will not stop you, another will.

Carol asks…

Mold in my apartment — I’m stuck in a lease.?

There is a bunch of mold in my apartment. I’ve contacted my landlord 3 times about it, and she has come in, sprayed it with mold spray and left. She got to the point where she gave me half a bottle of the spray and say I should “do it myself”. I’m in the basement apartment, and there is a frosted window in my shower to allow ventilation and underneath the sill that is wood there was a bunch of mold. She sprayed it, but it looks like its growing back. Also, the maintenance room is very close to my back closet, and they had a flood and didn’t tell me that it could of possibly leaked into my closet. I found out a month after when i moved some boxed in that closet and seen they had mold all over it. I was cleaning today, and the plastic panel under my shower head came loose, and I peeked behind only to find more mold. This is definitely a health hazard, and I want to move. The trouble is, I’m in a years lease (it will be until next summer). Is there no one I can contact to dispute that this is a health hazard, and make it possible to terminate my lease?
Please help.

Here’s a few more notes:
I had a few break ins last year, and I wanted a secure building. The landlord said that there is a security camera on every side of the building. One of my windows is on the left side, and i asked if there was a camera there. She said there was a hidden camera .. I found out she lied about that, giving me false security.

The place is freezing.. (its winter now, and I’m in a basement) and they refuse to turn up the heat because I keep my window in my kitchen open because the cat litter box is right there. They insist that if I “kept my windows closed” that it would be warm enough. I’m just using a space heater.

By the way.. I didn’t know if I should put this in Real Estate and Renting.. Or Home questions.. I think I’ll post in both.

Please help me out!
EDIT: I’m in Ontario.. In case laws or regulations or something are different
To Leo F:

If you read this properly, You’d notice that I say “Today, I was cleaning my bathroom” and thats how i discovered more mold.

Also, I have a bunch of windows. I just keep the one in the kitchen open 1/4 the way because the cat litter box is directly under it and I like to get the ammonia and crap smell out.

Aklymroofing answers:

I was all ready to answer this question for you & had all the web sites for you to go to & was going to ask which state your in so that i could give particular phone numbers & then….

You live in canada!!!! LOL i’m in florida so i can’t help you in terms of actual web sites & local health boards to contact. But def take prof csb’s advice & check out that web site he gave you, esp since he is in canada & knows more than those of us in the US about who the right people are to contact up there.

I can however give you a few tips.

For one thing, from everything you said, you ABSOLUTELY have enough to get you out of your lease & to get you out of it without you owing any money & while getting your security deposit back in full or at least whatever amount you were going to be getting back anyway. Between the mold which IS a health hazard & the false sense of security that she led you to feel combined with the heating issue is plenty. Now like i said, i’m in florida, so heating isn’t quite an issue here plus everything down here has central a/c & heat & each unit controls their own temp. But i did live in new jersey for 17+ years & so i know how that whole heating thing works. As of a certain date (in NJ its october 5th but may be a diff date where you live esp since where you are it gets even colder, sooner), a landlord for an apt that does not have access to their own temp, has to by law adjust the heat for you. While the laws state that there is a minimum, like she has to keep it at at least say 68 degrees for example, but on the colder days or if lets just say you’re one of those people who is always cold anyway, then if you ask her to raise it, she has to. Remind her that YOU pay for it & that there are laws in your favor. Sometimes just stating the obvious is enough to get people like her to do the right thing.

As far as the mold TAKE PICTURES!!!! Its the #1 thing you can do. Take pictures of every single patch of mildew in your entire apt from several diff angles & zoom in on some shots too. If the situation goes to court or mediation, she will have had a chance by then to clean it up & those pics will be your only evidence. And even if it doesn’t come to all of that, when you ask her for your deposit back, if she refuses b/c you are breaking the lease, you can threaten her with those pictures. Tell her she can either give you your money back or you are going to take them to either the health board or the building authority. Also say that you are going to report her to the better business bureau b/c by her lying to you about the security cameras she broke false advertisement laws. Just say she has 2 options: give you the money or you take the pictures & it becomes a big thing & that it will cost her alot more money between a lawyer, court fees & whatever fines the court might incur upon her. Also mention that you have already contacted a lawyer about the matter (& that he is willing to take the case on pro-bono since she likely knows your financial situation) & that he would like to take the situation to the public. Believe me, she will let you break the lease & give you the money.

And one last thing. You are no way at fault by leaving one of your windows open a bit (or even if you had 10 windows open all the way). Its your business. Your landlord has to provide you with the heat & what you do with it is not their problem. Most people leave a window open just a crack in the winter for various reasons. You do it b/c of your cats box & that makes a lot of sense. Some people do it b/c they smoke & don’t want to just fog up the house. Some people do it b/c the heat dries up their nose & nasal passages making it hard for them to breathe. Some people do it just to get some fresh air into the house b/c if you just have everything closed up all the time, the air in the house gets stale & nasty.

Is there a 2011 storm door tax credit?

I find information about storm door tax credits online but I can’t find any specific example of a type of door. I find examples of exterior doors and patio doors. Can anyone tell me of one storm door that I can get a tax credit for? I have spent endless amounts of time looking so any info would be appreciated!

Aklymroofing answers:

Are there ENERGY STAR storm windows and storm doors?

No, ENERGY STAR does not qualify storm windows or storm doors because currently there is no independent, third-party test and certification program for those products. The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) administers the test and certification program for ENERGY STAR qualified windows, doors, and skylights, however they do not have a program for storm windows or storm doors at this time. You can find more information about NFRC at www.nfrc.org.

The above is from energystar.gov. Since there is no rating crieria, they can’t qualify as this is a prerequisite to the credit.

How do I fix a power window of a 99 Chevy Lumina?

The FRONT passenger power window does not go up any more. I checked the fuse box and every thing seems in order. It stopped working after I tried to role up the BACK seat passenger side window with my driver side control while my little girl was playing with it. She held her button down about 5 seconds while I pushed up from my control for her window. When she let go of the botton, her window went up just fine. Then I locked it her controls. That is when the Front passenger side window wouldn’t go up at all anymore. Where could that have caused a short? I am hoping not to take inside of door apart or take it to the shop. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. PS I have only 2 days of good weather left.
Thank you,

Aklymroofing answers:

Sounds like you may have shorted the switch. Go to the library, get the window wiring diagram and do some simple tests. You can jump the switch and roll the window up. If all the other windows work then i would only look at the drivers switch. Oh and hurry you only have 2 days left

Jenny asks…

my neighbors smoke and it gets in the house, other than caulking the windows what can i do?

Also, do Ozonators (sp?) work? My wife is very allergic to smoke and we cant seem to get rid of the smell unless we close all the windows and doors at all times, and even then the smoke seems to occasionally get in.

Aklymroofing answers:

Well..there really isn’t enough information here to really base an answer on. If you live in an apartment complex or in a town home/duplex setting where you actually share walls with your neighbors you NEED to check the attic space, any basements and crawl spaces and another little important place that people often forget to check is your baseboards. The reason why you need to check all the places is for holes. Often in apartment complexes, especially those that are low income, they’re put up so fast and so shoddy that often times places like sheet rock have been cut wrong and if the baseboard doesn’t fit perfectly and that will allow smoke to slip through. Same with all the basement and attic areas that you may share with that neighbor. Ozinators (air purifiers) help a little but they are pretty high maintenance. I have one that I am constantly washing out, but I am a smoker too. I do know this about the apartments as I was a low-income apartment manager for 2 years and this was something that we constantly had problems with. You can use caulk on some areas, other areas you would be better off using the spray foam insulate on. Now, if this is something more along the line of separate houses on separate pieces of land, I would kindly explain the problem that your wife has with the smoke and ask if they could possibly smoke elsewhere. Maybe on the other side of the house? If they won’t, well then I guess you may be forced to keep the windows and doors shut or to move elsewhere. If they are in a low income housing unit, you can file a complaint with the landlord, which will make them responsible for filing all the cracks in the walls, attic and basement and with numerous complaints if it gets that bad, they are also responsible for handling the smoking neighbors, and may have to possibly throw them out if they won’t comply.

Good Luck

Exterior Painting problem – How to reach places above my garage?

I have simple two-story house with an attached two-car garage on the side. This summer, I am thinking of painting the exterior of my house. My problem is how to reach the second floor sidings (and all the way to the roof) on the side where the garage is. I need to paint the siding on my house which is above the garage. Since the garage has a sloped roof, I do not think it is safe to use a ladder there. I am not sureif I can rent some sort of sacffoling for that or find a ladder base or something like that! Can you give me some ideas.
Thank you all in advance.

Aklymroofing answers:

There are several routes you can take…. Working off of a ladder can be unnerving if you do not do it a lot, not to mention dangerous.
IF I were going to use ladders, I would use the scaffolding attachments you can get for them… Or… Better yet…. Get the ‘scaffold jacks’ that mount on a 4×4 post. You can create a plywood cutout, to fit around the top, and even screw it to your roof… Then a simple wedge will tighten up the assembly, and you’re good and sturdy… Your only limitation with this type of product is the length of the pole you can get…. And you can always splice 2 poles together, by bolting 8 ft boards around the joint of the two posts.

Stud lumber could be nailed to the roof of the garage, to form a brace for the base of the ladder, if you wanted to place a ladder up there.

Scaffolding can be rented.

You might check into renting a ‘cherry picker’… One of those trucks, like an electric company, tree service, or sign company might use.

Really tho… By the time you spend the money to invest in any of the options Ive mentioned so far…. You would probably be spending as much as you would to hire someone who does it for a living, and already has the tools and equipment. Ladders aren’t cheap, and neither are any of the other items Ive mentioned. Most of these items would be too expensive to purchase for use only every 10 years….even renting them can be costly.

Go ahead and find a local painter, and get an estimate… That won’t cost you anything, and may save you not only some money, but some broken bones 😉

Good Luck

What does it mean in California when a contractor works outside its classification?

Next door neighbor hired company to paint house exterior and community property fence. In the process, workers trespassed onto our property to replace fence posts and trashed our yard — busted sprinkler pipe, dug huge holes & poured with cement taking away a chunk of our lawn, broke several boards on our side plus took off the rails & never put them back. We checked with the state to see if the contractor is licensed. The business is licensed to do only painting & decorating. Since it’s not licensed to do construction, what are the implications & what can we do with the information?

Aklymroofing answers:

The contractor may be licensed to do certain things, but that doesn’t mean can’t hire other people to perform other duties.

As far as damages to your property, you would need to either sue your neighbor, or the contractor.

’99 Cherokee XJ: What causes the passenger window to go up very slowly?

All other windows go up and down normally, but that front passenger side window goes up about 1/2 the speed that it should. Down is fine.

Aklymroofing answers:

Window lift motor is dying. You can get a rebuilt one, A1 Cardone Brand Part # 82612 at just about any parts house.
Expect to pay about $70-80 for the motor and around $150-200 in labor costs.
Or, you can pick up a repair manual for $17.00 and do it yourself, It’s not as hard as it looks! Just be careful taking the door panel off as the clips are kinda flimsy.

If you opt to replace the entire assembly (which I recommend)
Expect $120-140 for the motor/regulator assembly which comes pre-assembled.

Why do my windows make screeching noises?

I bought my car couple of years ago and for about the past year it’s been making loud screeching/scratching noises when I raise and lower my windows. It seems to happen more on my passenger side window than my driver side.
Sometimes my driver side window stops while I attempt to raise it and I hear a clicking noise from the window control panel.
On both windows I notice long thin vertical scratches.
Can anyone help me fix this problem?

It seem that the tracks are out of adjustment. From being used a lot. The metal is weak on the inside panel’s. It flex each and every time the window goes up and down. The driver side sound like it is about to hang up. The inner door panel’s will hap to be removed. It take a specialize tools on some. The tracks may hap to be replaced in some cases.

what color should I paint the exterior of my house?

the roof is rust colored and it has dark gray or black stone accents. I was thinking taupe or a mushroom like color.

Aklymroofing answers:

Try going to lowe’s.com. Click on “projects” & try out the virtual painter. You can paint the exterior of a house different colors, change the roof color to match yours. You can also try out trim colors, door colors.

Where can i find the exterior paint color number for a 1997 Toyota Camry?

Aklymroofing answers:

Usually the paint colour and number is engraved on a metal plate bolted on the inside of your bonnet/hood.
Its usually close to the rod which you use to hold your bonnet/hood up with.

Website for house painting suggestions?

We are going to be painting our house and I want to find a website that will let me try out different paint colors for siding to compliment my shingles. Does anyone know of a site that does this?

Aklymroofing answers:

Go to the color visualizer. There’s an option to look for exterior paints. You can choose the house style you want to see the paint on and then see what all the different colors will look like (including different colors for doors and trim if you want)–very cool!

Can you change refrigerator colors by using replacement skins on the outside of the fridge?

I now have a white refrigerator and would like to change the color but do not wish to purchase a new one as it is only 1 year old. Are there “skins” to cover the orginal exterior available or is painting the only option?

Aklymroofing answers:

If you are able to do this….ask around at auto body shops that spray paint cars…they can do a real pro job..Also, lots of colors to chose from…Stoves, fridge, cabinets, dishwasher.
Good Luck!

driver side window broken / stuck down on a 98 mountaineer?

My dad’s 98 mountaineer driver side power window decided not to work after being rolled all the way down. All the other windows work except for that one. I’m sure the switch is not the problem. What could the problem be?

Aklymroofing answers:

If all the other windows work ok & you checked the window switch , it must be the window motor . When you push the switch do hear any noise? If not then it”s surely the motor. Get a new motor.

What are the large barcode stickers on windows on cars in Florida?

I see them all the time, they are pretty large in size, and so far I have only seen them on cars in Florida. I think they are generally on the back passenger side window. What are they???

Aklymroofing answers:

Those are for people that in live Condos that have a bar code reader at the main entrance gate. You mostly see these on high end condos.

David asks…

Why do my power windows sometimes work and sometimes not?

I have a 2DR 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix. I have had problems with my driver side window only working every now and then. It seems that if I let it sit for a bit, it will go up partially and then stop. It seems that the motor is getting warm and shutting itself off. I know that the rubber guides are somewhat sticky, especially in the summer, and seem to really make my windows go up slow. I tried lubricating them last summer with graphite lubricant. I worked somewhat poorly and the problem is back. I’m not sure if I can get by with better lubrication on the rubber or if I should replace my motor. If I need to replace, my motor, can I just replace the motor or should I replace the entire window regulator and motor??

Aklymroofing answers:

There is a circuit breaker block on the fuse panel. It is probably kicking out when it gets hot and then resets itself when it gets cold again.Replace the breaker.probably looks like this—

Which side of the driver is the clutch pedal on in European vehicles?

I know that the steering wheel is on the left side of the car in european made vehicles, but where is the clutch located?

is the clutch closer to the middle of the car or closer to the driver side window?

Aklymroofing answers:

Most European countries put the driver on the left, like in the US. They also drive on the right (otherwise known as the CORRECT) side of the road. It’s just Britain and its possessions, Japan, and a few other small countries that drive on the left.

And the clutch pedal is on the left no matter whether the car is right or left hand drive.

Chris asks…

If your car was sinking and you had a handgun, could you shoot out the windows to escape?

Just doing some research for a story I’m writing. If I had a character in a submerged car who had a handgun, could they realistically fire it at their side window and have the window break so they could escape?
The character is a female cop with a standard issue weapon.
Also, the car has power locks and windows.

Aklymroofing answers:

I remember a story on this on 20/20 several years back. At least I think it was 20/20. They ran thru this scenario and breaking the windows on the doors was the best thing to do. The specifically advised using a small hole punch. You just press hard against the glass and it would shatter.

If your character has a gun, he might be better of just smashing the side window with a gun. Or take a shot, and even if it’s not completely smashed, you can then use the gun to bust out the rest of the window in short order.

How do I paint cinder block (outside)?

what kind of paint? do i need primer?

Aklymroofing answers:

First you need to pressure wash with TSP solution.

Then fill the cracks with mortar.

Then, use a latex block sealer. I have used Duron before:
http://www.duron.com/products/exterior_primers/productdetails.asp?cat=4&lineid=394#High%20Performance%20Acrylic%20Block%20Filler%20-%20White

Then use a high quality primer

Mandy asks…

Using Evo-Stick Waterproof PVA as a base for exterior filler?

I’m planning to use Evo-Stick Waterproof Evo Bond PVA as an adhesive base for exterior filling of a large masonry crack.
Would using this as a primer coat (mixed 1:5 with water) be acceptable, or would it be better to use as an adhesive (mixed 3:1 with water)?

The masonry in reasonably exposed to the weather, and would be painted over with several layers of masonry paint (hopefully) before rain.

Aklymroofing answers:

I’d not use any form of PVA outside.

If anything, use a trace of non air-entraining plasticizer to allow the mortar to flow easily and ensure the crack is deeply packed, without having to use much water in the mix.
Too much water means it will shrink back before having chance to set.

If it’s too narrow to pack, open it out a bit and make sure the sides are parallel rather than a V.

Wet the surfaces down thoroughly first to remove any traces of dust, and ensure the mortar does not dry out and shrink before it has chance to start setting and bonding to the surfaces.

Keep it damp as long as possible, the cement stops setting once it dries out – but if damp, it continues to gain strength for several weeks.

Cost of painting the exterior of a barn?

It’s 2000 square feet of sheet metal and some warped wood that may need replaced. It will need a primer coat and a color coat. The area around the barn will need to be mowed and picked up before painting will begin. I need to hit it with a power washer to take off all the loose paint. The material cost will be some where in the neighborhood of $400. What would be a reasonable asking price? I want to be below a professional price but I’m not just going to donate my time. Thanks.

Aklymroofing answers:

It’s hard to tell without seeing the project. Probably a weeks work for 2 people? I’d figure atleast $20 per hour. BTW: $400 for materials sounds low, but I’d have to see the project.

How do i remove KILZ 2 Primer from my pants?

My mom said i can’t sleep until i remove enough of the primer off my sweats. I was doing a job at 1 of her properties when out of nowhere i was forced to prime the entire exterior of the house; needless to say my sweatpants suffered, and so did i when my mom found out.

Aklymroofing answers:

Not going to happen…primer totally permenates any fabric it gets on because that is what it is designed to do. Your mom needs to know alittle about paint chemistry before giving you such an impossible task. Becides sweat pants are not like 80 dollars trousers…she can just get over it if she expects you to prime houses without advanced notice without concern for what you are wearing. I used to be a painting major in art college, and no matter how careful you are…the stuff will end up on your clothes. I had a teacher who had to wear nice clothes to class, but always managed to get paint on himself. He just took the replacement of his clothes off of his taxes. All you really can do is replace them. If your mom does not know that, then she needs to try to get the kilz2 off your pants while you go to bed.

Sharon asks…

How should you paint cement/concrete blocks?

blocks make up a large wall

exterior

Aklymroofing answers:

First, pressure blast it to clean off the surface (or at least hit it with a strong stream from a hose). Let this dry completely (a day or two, depending on temperature and humidity). Next, apply a coat or two of primer for masonry surfaces. Finally, apply a color coat of masonry paint. If you use a roller (as opposed to a sprayer), you might need to use a brush to get the mortar lines between the blocks. And, use a roller with at least a 3/4-inch nap for textured surfaces.

How do I fix a loose/wobbly window crank on a 97 Honda Civic CX?

Love this car, but the driver’s side window crank is loose and wobbly. It wiggles alot, and I’m afraid it might break off. Window rolls up and down fine, just that the crank is really really loose. How do you tighten them back up?

There’s usually a clip that holds them in place located behind crank can see if they sell clip seperate or you might have to buy window regulator which comes w/handle and clip

Should I get my toyota Camry 96 model window repaired if I want to sell it?

My Camry’s drivers side window is either off the track or the motor has gone bad. The motor makes a noise when I operate the switch, but the window neither rolls down nor up. I have been using it rolled up for a few days, but was wondering how much price can I ask for it if I plan to sell it. Should I get it repaired?

Aklymroofing answers:

Repairing it will raise the value by about $500 so it will depend on the repair cost.

Selling a Toyota is always a good idea though.

How to test 1993 Mercedes Benz 300E front driver and passenger window motor?

My friend has a 1993 Mercedes Benz 300E with the 2.8L engine and the passenger window motor quit working so i’ve been trying to get that fixed but getting the part is hard. And now the driver side window motor has gone or it’s the switch i’ll know friday but I need to know how to test a window motor with a volt meter because i’m gonna go to the junkyard and get replacement motors. So please tell me how to test a motor so I know if the one i’ll be getting isn’t junk

Aklymroofing answers:

No reliable way to test a window motor with just a volt meter. If you are getting one from a junk yard they will test it on the spot with a battery.
As mentioned, you can frog the switch to test in the car. Most likely with a ’93, the switch is bad OR the ground is bad.

What is the best way to paint a steel door?

I want to paint my front door, which is made of steel and has those rectangular insets. I’m wondering whether a roller or a brush or something else should be used for the best, smoothest results.
Thanks!
The door is actually already painted white. Do I still need a primer? Do I still need metal paint?

Would spray-paint (in a can) work?
I’m kind of looking for an easy way out…

Aklymroofing answers:

You will need 4 things:
Color matched metal Primer (Home Depot) [choose a color close to the final color you intend white->white brown->black]
Painters Tape (HD) [before starting tape out anything you dont want painted, do not rely on your steady hands, it will look something awful]
Metal Paint (Paint Store) [home depot will have general exterior paint but this is designed to soak into wood, its not exactly what you need, although over a primed surface it will sorta work.
Paint Sprayer or Roller and touch up brush (HD) (if you roll the paint on you will need 3 careful applicantions, if you spray it on 2, but then a sprayer will set you back $150, hand painting is also an option, use 3 thin layers and you will achieve an even coat that look very proffesional)

Its already painted…?

You need to asses the quality of the paint job. If it is peeling and has rust on it then you need to strip the paint first using something like a kerosene based paint remover. If it is not and the paint looks fine and you want to change colors, well go ahead and paint it using the method above without the primer.

Will Spray Pain work?
Yeah, spray paint will work, go to www.duplicolor.com and pick out a metal enamel and use that. I do not recomend using the outdoor paint they have. No matter what you do it will not look good. Spraypaint is not the right stuff for a job that is a front door to a house, but if you dont care what your house looks like, go ahead spray paint away, use 3 thin applications for a “fresh off the Honda Civic garage” look.

John asks…

Is white paint more susceptible to mould and mildew than darker paint colours?

Hi, we’re looking to repaint the exterior of our home and have been advised that white is not a good colour for trim detail as it encourages mould and mildew growth more than darker paint shades. Is this true?

Aklymroofing answers:

I’m not sure that this is true but what I do know is that you can add a Mildewside product to your paint to help it prevent mold and mildew regardless of the color.

It’s only $4.00 a packet and they can mix it right into your paint at the store. They should help prevent it from growing.

I painted wooden windows with this 7 years ago and still no signs of mold or mildew.

I would recommend this product and have mixed it into every can of paint I buy.

Have a good one..

need to paint house previousely used a coloring agent &linseed oil?

Aklymroofing answers:

Hello Rudy:

put down two coats of “Kilz” primer before painting. Use the type for oil base paint first, then the latex paint. If you don’t treat the wood, the weatherbeater will peel in a few years. The primer will give you a longer life expectancy.

What exterior paint colors effect house resale value, and in what way?

Aklymroofing answers:

I’am a painter 30 year’s plus day job one piece of advise on exterior this 2006 not 1960 people are into two tone and color’s like i’ll explain not blue, red, stuff like that paint your exterior an off white now there’s. #50 different white’s believe that it is because each paint store try’s to compete with each other. Trim it out Shutter, exterior door’s, top of hand rail’s if you have hand rail’s on porch if not just shutter’s and door’s a macthing color to an off white so it will stand out from the rest of the base of the home color. These color’s will help you sell you home. Why ? Because it’s what people like in our time’s today this is great advise that an interior decorator would change you alot of money to lay out for you it’s free from me i paint for so many decorator’s i know their layout’s.

I have a cream colored colonial house and I am looking for authentic colors for the door and shutters.?

I want the door and shutters to be different colors. Bring on your best suggestions. The winner gets 10 points from me and I hopefully get a fabulous looking home. Thanks for all your suggestions.

Aklymroofing answers:

Here’s a great manufacturer of authentic colors for that time period! – Old Village Paints – http://old-village.com

They were featured on the history channel, and they have several examples of famous buildings that have used their paints when restoring. Here’s a blurb from their site –

“OLD VILLAGE PAINTS capture the charm and character of Colonial, Federal and Victorian periods. Perfect for furniture, walls, decorative accents, interior and exterior woodwork.”

If you want something dramatic, use their Rittenhouse Red; If you want something more subtle – Rittenhouse Green – http://old-village.com/paint_profiles/ov_paint_colours.html

A beautiful combination would be the Society Hill Blue and the Philadelphia Brownstone . ..

Hey, if you’re refinishing any antique furniture for your colonial home, I strongly recommend General Finishes! Beautiful oil based and waterbased furniture paints that have won awards – http://www.generalfinishes.com

How much does it cost to replace an airbag?

I was recently in a car accident where I was T-Boned. The airbags near the right passenger side door window (front and back) were deployed along with it looks like an airbag near the passengers shoulder. Is this one big airbag cause I could tell and didnt really care at the time. Also how much does it cost to replace those airbags?

If it was “T-Boned”, then I would think that the airbags are the least of your worries. You need to get an estimate from a body shop.

how hard is it to remove drivers side door panel, i need the regulator and motor for my 1988 nissan maxima gxe?

Aklymroofing answers:

93 explorer window fell off track how to get back on track?

I have a 93 ford explorer and the driver side window fell off the track and it is stuck down in the door and I am no mechanic so I dont want to mess up anything by just twerkin with it. Please if anyone can tell me how to take the door panel off and setting the window back on the track please let me know. Thank you.

Aklymroofing answers:

Putting it back on track is easy. But the hard part is having to remove the inside door covering. That means taking of the handles. Taking of all the switches, etc. Sometimes it requires specially designed tools. Sometimes not. Once all that is off, you can actually see the window and lift it back onto the track. So if you get through all that and up to the window part, make sure you have some adhesive compound to place on the bottome of the window to keep it on track. I did it once, took me hours on end. Will never, NEVER do it again. Bring it to a body shop. Whatever it costs, it’s worth it. Good Luck.

What airless paint sprayer do you like and recommend for painting exterior siding?

I have been offered a used Wagner Airless Paint Sprayer Model #4275 for $130. We are remodeling a 100+ yr old house. I can’t beat the price. Refurbished online they are still almost $300. You can read the specs on the following website.

http://www.gleempaint.com/4275-airless.html

Anyone had experience with this model? Or would anyone recommend a different brand in a similar price range? Just want thoughts, ideas and comments about paint sprayers. Anything that can make painting this house easier would be great!

Aklymroofing answers:

Its worth buying for $130. Wagner paint guns are lower end guns, but it would work good for you since you won’t be using it very long. My first gun was a wagner and it lasted me for about three months ( nine houses). Just make sure you clean the heck out if it after each use. I usually run 5 gallons of soapy water through my guns.

Robert asks…

What is the brand name for paint that is weather and rot resent?

Aklymroofing answers:

I use Kiltz, it stands up well to the elements, and usually you need one coat. Whatever brand you get, don’t get el cheapo ($7-$10 a gal)”professional” paint. Around $20 a gallon in a reasonable price. Believe me the expensive paint is cheaper, you don’t have to keep re-coating it, and it lasts a long time. Make sure you buy “exterior” paint.

what is a good heavy duty paint stripper for an oak door which has been painted black?

Oak wood front door (exterior only) – trying to remove some kind of black paint or stain from front door but is not coming off well. we’ve tried stripper already a bunch of times, tried sanding the color out but sanding has started to remove decorative grooves in door and the door is only a few shades lighter. is there any known fast heavy duty paint stripper product out there that anyone knows of?

Aklymroofing answers:

The brand name isn’t as important as is getting a paint stripper that is heavy bodied or a gell. Leave it on as long as it says, or a little loner, to give it time to work. Scrape all that will come off, Wipe it down with paint thinner and then reapply until it all comes off. To get the last little bit, use 000 steel wool dipped in stripper and rub with the grain.

Sandy asks…

How can I make exterior wood steps non-slip?

We have to build 3 steps up to the front door, and would ideally like them to be made from wood. Problem is, I assume painted wood gets slippery in the wet/ice/snow.
What can I put on the treads to make them non-slip?

Aklymroofing answers:

If you don’t like the idea of messing with adding sand to paint, Valspar makes a non-skid paint called “Skid-Not”. It’s ideal for pool decks, handicap ramps, porches, steps, etc. I believe quartz is used instead of sand, but it’s premixed so you don’t have to worry about not adding enough or to much sand to your paint. It’s also a latex paint, so cleanup is simple with water and soap. Available in about 40 different colors, or you can have it color matched to any color you’d like. This paint bonds very well to properly prepared and primed wood. I’ve used this product on porches and steps, and found it to be much better than adhesive non-skid strips that tend to come loose, cover a limited area, and don’t look as good as a painted surface. This particular brand is sold at Lowe’s home centers, but most home centers carry the same product by different manufacturers. In my area the costs is relatively cheap, about 25-30 dollars a gallon.

Charles asks…

Where do I get started (exterior home painting)?

Sherry H I love your answer thank you so much! YOU ROCK!
what was the brand of paine bob villa used?

Aklymroofing answers:

The last time I painted my house, including shutters & downspouts I used Weatherbeater Ultra from Sears. Its top of the line & latex.

Paint the house, then paint all your trim, windows, overhang, gutters and downspouts.

For the shutters I recommend spray paint. It is so much easier and faster. Buy the right brand of spray paint made for the material your shutters are made from @ wood, plastic, metal, etc.

The brand of house paint I recommended is higher in price than most of the rest. I bought it 13 years ago when Bob Vila was recommending it. My house still looks as freshly painted today as the day I painted it. No peeling, flaking or fading! I have repainted my front door a couple of times just to freshen it up do to wear and tear, its a steal door with leaded glass in it. Used an enamel paint by a different manufacturer. I painted my house victorian blue, trimmed the shutters and front door in burgundy and painted the overhangs and guttering white. It was then and still is the prettiest home on the block.

I want to say before I used the weatherbeater Ultra paint, I had to paint my house every 3-4 tears due to peeling and bubbling of the paint. My house is wood.

So even though initially I paid more for the paint, in the long run I have saved lots of money and hard work because its lasted 13 years and looks like its going to last a lot longer.

Have fun, do it right, then sit back and enjoy!!!

What do you initially assume when you see a plate of an out-of-state plate that’s no where near where you live?

Yes, I know I’m ”thinking too much.” lol But let’s say for example, you’re in Jersey and see an OH plate. In NJ (where I live), you have to change your plates over in 60 days. If you don’t, you can get a ticket. And trust me, the state troopers here won’t hesitate to do that. I’m not sure what the laws in other states are. But for me, if I see an Ohio plate in Jersey, I don’t assume they didn’t move here, because what’s the probability everyone fits neatly into that sixty day window? But it’s still a possibility I recognize. If you’re in NJ and see an OH plate, do you think this person is originally from NJ? Or if you’re in OH and see an NJ plate, do you think they’re from OH? I say to myself, what on earth would someone want to move to some random Ohio town lol If there’s some local dealership thing, with an out-of-state plate, I might think they’re just from around here. But if not, I don’t know what to think. I work at Home Depot, so I may see this more than the average person. For what ever reason it is, I see lots of awkward plates in the lot all the time. I figure contractors may be willing to travel further distances to make money. I go to a community college though and the other day, I saw an Alabama plate, and knew this school wasn’t good enough to come for lol But would you think they live here?

I wanted to know what people thought about this. I’m sure, at one time or another, you’ve all seen this. Especially if you’re from a tourist type down. I live in Southwestern New Jersey, about 15 miles of
rom Philadelphia.By all means, this is not a ”touristy” destination. On the eastern side of South Jersey, where the Jersey Shore, Atlantic City and Cape May are, that attracts lots of tourists. I’m not sure how far someone would be willing to drive for Jersey’s beaches (six hours?), but I can see it around there. One thing about New Jersey is we have over crowded roads and not enough of them. Many of our local streets are roads that’d be considered highways to ninety percent of America. And for because of our barriers, you rarely are able to make left turns. What could these people want in Jersey? Especially when it’

Can a cop pull you over for a previous off duty incident he provoked?

On 5/31/12 at 7:05am I was driving to work when a pickup truck in front of me swerved over the double yellow lines towards an area where children were waiting for a school bus to come. A father was walking his son to this bus stop area. The pickup drove halfway back into our lane of travel then stopped. The father and young son walked over to the pickup and had a conversation with the driver while the pickup was blocking both directions of travel in the roadway. After waiting for approximately 1.5 minutes I honked at the pickup. The driver looked out the window at me then went back to his conversation for approximately another minute. Then the father and son walked away and the truck began driving at 5mph while the driver starred at me in his driver side mirror. He did this until we reached a 3 way stop that was 500ft ahead from the area he stopped to talk. The driver stopped his truck at the stop sign and his brake lights went off and he did not move forward, he was still starring at me in his driver side mirror. I assumed he put the vehicle in park since the brakes lights were off, he continued starring at me for 1 minute and did not move. When traffic was clear I honked at him and gave him the finger. His driver door flew open, as soon as I saw the door fly open I thought, oh no this guy wants to fight. So I started driving around his truck through the clear intersection and when he unbuckled and got out I noticed it was a uniformed police officer. He put his right hand on his pistol area and gave me the middle finger with his left hand. This happened while I was driving around him and through the 3-way stop intersection. I continued on straight through the intersection to work and he made a right through the intersection.

The following day there was a marked police car at this same intersection with this same cop driving. It pulled me over immediately. Before the cop came to my vehicle I started recording all the audio of the stop on my Smartphone (in NJ only 1 involved party has to know of the recording.) The officer asked for my license and registration and said nothing else; I asked him why I was being stopped. He said “for the incident that happened between us yesterday.” He gave me three tickets, all dated 6/1/12 not 5/31/31 when the incident occurred. The tickets were improper passing, failure to stop or yield, and careless driving each are 2 points. Immediately after the stop I went to the police station and reported this incident just as I did here to his Sergeant. He informed me they will do an internal investigation and I will be notified of the results.

I would like to know everyone’s opinion on this matter, as I am not a lawyer in a way or have ever been involved in a situation like this before. This incident happened in NJ in the town I live in.

Aklymroofing answers:

Since you live in that town, I would expect that you will get lots more traffic citations there in the future. That’s not saying that the officer was 100% right, but you will be found guilty in Municipal Court. Next time think twice before you get off on honking and giving someone the finger. Next time it might not be a cop, but a gang banger with a bad temper and 9 millimeter.

By the way, the officer did nothing improper, except give YOU the finger back. I doubt he will get disciplined for that, especially in a small town. If I were you, I’d move, or at least get a different car.

Does anyone feel Netbanner Ads are invading your privacy?

I’ve been doing some marketing for awhile now, and came across Netbannerads.com – Actually, they had e-mailed me and let me know that I may not have some keyword on my site, etc. After speaking with someone over there, I asked how Google!, Yahoo, and MSN would allow them to have a website appear on top of their listings. This is where things get tricky.

They deal with outsourced non-affiliate, non-partnering ‘active x attacking’ companies. Those companies install 3rd party software on your computer (Kind of like those annoying pop-up windows you mindlessly click ‘ok’ to). Once the software is installed, and you utilize Google!, Yahoo, or MSN to search for something, the 3rd party software will display the person owning the ‘keyword’s website on TOP of the search listings.

More in depth > If I search for “Toyota”, in stead of getting Toyota’s Advertisement First (Which I’m sure they paid good money for), I’ll get Larry’s Toyota Dealership in New Brunswick, NJ. appearing on top of everything, with my actual search listings far below this.

I think there might even be some infringement here – not only on a user side, but on the policies governing advertising rights on these sites.

If anyone can show a moral, or ethical stand point here that advises to use Netbannerads.com (absolving from the picture the marketing and money aspect of this) I’d be greatly appreciated.

Also, in general, it’s about $2000-$3000 a year to own a ‘word’ or ‘phrase’, which could be seen as many as 30,000 times a month, and clicked-free-of-charge. In comparison to Google!’s AdWords, which can cost up to $3 per click, and when you’re looking to up #’s, and not to sell a product, Netbannerads.com seems VERY cost effective.

Nancy asks…

Estimate on Renovation?

I live in a twin home in Trenton, NJ and would like to purchase the nasty house next door and expand into it. They have knob & tube electric & oil heat, so I’m thinking the best way to go is to gut the place, run new electric, new plumbing, and new radiators/pipes to hook into my gas-powered steam furnace. I wouldn’t be putting in a kitchen, or buying a heater/hot water tank, but I think I would want to put in a new electrical service on that side to not put a strain on my current box. I’d tear down an ugly addition in the backyard on the first floor, block two front doors (the house is a two-family), rip out a stairwell, and put a family room, half-bath, and dining room on that floor. The upstairs would be the master suite with a walk-in closet and luxury bathroom (round jacuzzi tub, stall shower, double sinks) which would open up to my existing hallway on the other side. Hard-wood floors throughout. Replace appx 12 windows and fix a leaky slate roof. 1600 sq. feet.

Can anyone give me a ballpark figure as to what it would cost? Is gutting and starting over the best way to go with all the new wires and pipes? A house with everything I want in my area is over $400k. My house cost 125, and was completely remodeled with a great kitchen, and I can buy the house next door for 60.

Aklymroofing answers:

Your description leads me to believe it may be financially wiser to tear down the house next door and re-build it on the existing foundation. The type of renovation, remodeling and retro-fitting you are talking about will run you between $130.00 to $160.00 per square foot. New construction on an existing foundation will cost you between $110.00 and $135.00 per square foot.

Do the math. Either way, if you are confident the property will appraise for $400k after renovation you do not want to spend any more than $190k in renovation. If you spend under $190k you will be able to get a minimal return on your investment(approx. 5%) in case of an emergency sell.

Good luck. Sounds like a large but exciting project.

Does a white painted house get dirty easily?

I am thinking about painting my house (exterior). I would like to go with white. Would it get dirty fast like a white car would?

Aklymroofing answers:

If you have dirt around it that rain can splash up on, yes. It doesn’t necessarily get dirty easier as it just shows up more.

Mandy asks…

Is bleach a safe solution to remove mold from the side of a house?

We have a small power washer. What kind of solution can we use safely to remove mold, moss and just plain dirt from the exterior of our house. Our house does not have siding. We would like to paint it after it is cleaned.

Aklymroofing answers:

No, the power washer won’t take care of anything. There are very few things out there that can kill mold. When performing mold remediation, we use bleach, and nothing but bleach. We don’t dilute it, we just apply to the infected area, let stand for 10 – 20 seconds, and then scrub it clean. Rinse the area with water and you are done. The bigger question is what is causing the mold? You need to identify and eliminate the source of the mold.

House exterior painting. Can I paint latex over a stain?

Can I use latex paint to paint exterior house over previously stained cedar siding?

Aklymroofing answers:

Yes, but go over it first with a wire brush to knock off any loose stuff and get a firm surface for the primer to stick to, then prime it solid, and paint it. Get the primer tinted as close to the paint color as possible to make it easier to cover.

John asks…

If a can of exterior latex house paint has been left outside over the winter, is it ruined?

I forgot it under the porch all winter long, and just found it today. It’s a nearly full gallon. Did I ruin the paint by leaving it out in the freezing cold all winter, or is it still usable?

Aklymroofing answers:

Yes you should discard the paint. Once it freezes it changes chemically. Even if it looks OK it would be a risk to use it. As much trouble as painting is, you sure don’t want to take the risk just to save a few dollars. Been there myself. I should know better since I have been a painter since the 1970’s. Forgot and left paint in my unheated garage all winter.

Mark asks…

What is the waterproof black stuff painted on the exterior foundation of my house?

I’m fixing the stucco on the exterior of my house and I need to re-paint or re-tar the black stuff back on below grade. Hopefully I can buy this at Home Depot or Lowes?

Aklymroofing answers:

There are a few different products that can be used.

Most likely, it was applied when your driveway was last sealed. In that case, it is a hot-applied product like tar. If you are getting your driveway resealed any time soon, I would ask the contractor to reapply it again as a hot applied adhesive often holds up best.

However, a cold-applied adhesive could also have been used by the previous homeowner. Henry’s carries a whole line of cold applied adhesives that you can purchase at a local HD or Lowe’s.
