How can I find out how much my classic car is worth?

I’m not entirely sure it’s a ‘classic’, but I have a 1968 Chevrolet Impala. It runs great, only has 113,000 miles on it, and has only had three owners, including myself. The interior is all original, and is in great condition, aside from a tear on the drivers side. There are a few hoses that need to be replaced in the engine, and the seals need to be replaced, (windows, doors, etc.) But that’s about it.

Aklymroofing answers:

Check Hemming’s classic car trader and other sources.

How to fix my Renault Megane back window?

Hi,

My rear passenger side window on my Renault Megane 53 plate is open by about an inch. It won’t close, or move up or down. All other 3 electric windows work fine. It is a pain at the moment as the rain is getting into my car.

Any suggestions how to fix this without going to a garage?

Thanks in advance.

Aklymroofing answers:

I you’re capable of taking the door panel off and doing it yourself, yes. You won’t know what’s up with it till you open it up, it may be just a broken connector or something stuck, knowing French electrics it’ll be more than that though.

A Haynes manual might be useful.

Sandy asks…

Why is my window falling down?

I have an 86 s-10 blazer. The drivers side window fell into the door. I took it all apart and put it back on the regulator but when I roll it up now, the window falls forward into the door instead of going up. I have to hold it with my hand to get it up.(That doesn’t sound right :) Any ways is there something I’m missing that supports the weight on the front of the window , or do you know where I can find a diagram of all the parts involved?

Aklymroofing answers:

On the straight edge of the window there is a hole in it there is usually like i little stud in it that keeps the window from falling forward if it is missin replace it if it is still there push back on the window and get it back in the groove it’s really easy to fix

Michael asks…

how do i take the door panel off of a 1992 mercury cougar?

my passenger side window dont roll down, when i push the button. u can hear it trying to but it just wont. i think the glass may be off track or something. how do i take off the door panel to fix it?

Aklymroofing answers:

Probably needs a new window regulator. Sorry, but if you can’t even get the door panel off, you’re probably not ready to replace a window regulator.

What is the lowest tempurature acceptable for exterior painting?

We’re painting trim on our house and the white paint is leaving grey patches. Do you think it’s the paint or the 55 degree temperature?

Aklymroofing answers:

I think its the paint because i was painting my family house with white paint and there was black patches were everywhere i thought i did something wrong but it was the paint just get new paint or cover over it

Helen asks…

How long should the exterior paint on a house last?

I’m in So. Calif, it’s very dry. We’re ready to repaint the whole exterior of our house, and I’m just wondering how long it will be before we have to do this again.

Does that depend on the type of paint used?

Aklymroofing answers:

It’s really going to depend on what your house is made of, how well you remove the paint that is already there (or how well stuck it is if you’re painting over), how much weather it gets, the type of paint used how meticulous you are in applying it, what the weather is the day you apply… There are a lot of factors.

Go to someone in your area who is knowledgable in paint products (sorry to offend the teens who work at Depot and Lowe’s). Have them recommend an exterior paint for you.

Wait for a period of 3-5 sunny days without rain. Paint on the third day of the sunny stretch. It can’t be too humid as the moisture will affect drying time. It also can’t be too hot, so ask the paint specialist for the ideal temp. In your area to paint.

Prep the house well. Pressure wash it, then go back and sand any loose or flaky spots. Painting over loose paint won’t stick and cause peeling.

I hope this helps you. You should expect about 5 years for your exterior, but again it could be more or less.

Linda asks…

My house needs siding will Insurance pay for it?

After years of weather, the wood on my house has started to er road and come apart. There are big holes in the side of my house and i know if it keep up there will be mold, if there isn’t already. Simply after years of hard rain the exterior of my house looks like old paint crusting off, but it isn’t paint its wood. I would like to know if my insurance will pay for new siding. Also after years of hard rain the soil around the foundation is eroding will foundation wall be covered by home owners insurance. Thanks. Home owner.

Aklymroofing answers:

I believe what your house needs is routine maintenance. Insurance won’t pay for that just like your car insurance won’t pay for an oil change.

Daniel asks…

How to remove exterior paint from masonry block house?

I have been chipping for a week at the loose paint. About half of the house paint is painted on pretty solid.
Sandblasting, i am told, is too hard, messy to do.
A pressure washer, about 3500 psi, is another way but I have never done that.
Is there any chemical to put on the paint that will allow the paint to come off?

Aklymroofing answers:

The only sure fire way that I’m aware of you already mentioned…sandblasting. And even then I’ve heard that it will not get all of the paint out of the little nooks and crannies of the brick. You would think that in this day and age that someone would have invented a chemical that would peel the paint off of brick, so I did a search and found the link bellow. It looks like it’s a question and answer forum, and a couple people mentioned 2 different products that worked for them. Both said both products take time, but they will work.

How do I remove flecks of white paint from a black car. Happened some weeks ago while having house painted?

The Fiat has seems to have only one coat of black paint which scratches very easily so I am very wary of trying to remove the little white paint flecks which landed on it one windy day while having the outside of my house painted. Hope ye can help. Thank you

Aklymroofing answers:

You’ve already got the right answer in your list…

A friend of mine had similar trouble. The hotel hosting a classic car show was repainting its exterior during the show. All the local experts recommended a “Clay Bar” to remove the paint mist from his car. He tried it, and it worked.

What is the benefit of paint over stain outdoors?

I have a old wood privacy fence and deck in my back yard which have always both had opaque/solid stain on them.
The condition of both are they are sound but they starting to crack especially on the deck and cup a bit, and are both quite weathered.
What is the benefit to using exterior *paint* rather than stain outdoors on items like this?

Aklymroofing answers:

It depends on the nature of the stain. Is it oil-based? If it is, the main difference would be that the paint will give more coverage and will eventually flake. Both will need to be redone every couple of years. To be safe, get under the deck and carefully check the condition of the wood underneath the flooring–this is often in much worse shape than the flooring lumber. Good luck!

How do I care for my vehicles Teflon coated paint?

Hi,

I just purchased a 2007 Tacoma and Toyota put their “finishing touch” spray on the exterior paint. I think it is a teflon based protectant. Anyways, it is supposed to protect the paint from the elements. My question is, is there anything I need to do to care of this coating? How about washing? Is it safe to use automotive detergent or will it strip the sealant? How about waxing? Will that srtip it? Thanks for the help!

Mitchell

Aklymroofing answers:

Paint protection sold by a dealer is nothing more than car wax–they say it has Teflon in it to sound good ’cause everyone thinks nothing will stick to Teflon. It may have Teflon in it but basically you’re paying for the warranty…waste of money in my opinion. Check the wording of the warranty—some of them require you to reapply the wax periodically and you should be able to get more wax at the dealer at no charge….other ones just require that you rewax as normal. Just buy a good quality wax and rewax when the water does not bead up on the car….wash as usual with any good car wash soap not dish soap. Next time, save the 400.00 for a good buff job or detail once a year.

Accidentally put interior paint on the exterior of my home?

There was a mix up at the paint store I guess. There was existing exterior paint on the trim, I painted it today with interior paint – can I just put exterior paint over it or do I have to strip it off?

Aklymroofing answers:

You should be ok, especially if the paint was oil/solvent based rather than water based. Whenever you choose to repaint there is no need to strip this off.

How do I remove the 2nd layer of window tint on my car rear window??

Hi,

So I bought a 98 Honda Civic and I’m trying to slowly fix it up and mod it. I was able to remove the tint on the side windows w/ no problem but the rear window seems to have the 1st layer of tint already removed. I researched some of the websites and they said it was pretty easy to remove as long as both layers of the tint were still intact with the ammonia/ trash bag method. My only problem is that I only have the 2nd layer left. Any ideas on how to painfully remove this or am I going to have to tough it out and do it with the razor blade method? I’m going to be careful with the defroster lines if this is the case.
I know I could take it to a shop but I don’t want to pay them $100 bucks to remove the tint if I dont have to. Thanks

Aklymroofing answers:

If the window has defrost lines in it your going to hate yourself for even trying it. You’ll never get it off the window without pulling up the line no matter how careful you are. Window tint that has been on for any length of time to set up is like trying to peel fiberglass apart one layer at a time without screwing up the next layer. And if you plan on tinting the window in the future you will always see the glue left behind from this layer. Your best thing to do is replace the window. If you have glass coverage on it through your ins co go that route you’ll be happier and less stressed……….I am sure that if you bring it someplace to have it removed your defroster still wont work.

How much would it cost to replace an apartment exterior door?

We contacted one contractor, who is also replacing our windows, and he said that he would also install a good quality door (replacing the jamb and with locks and so forth) for $1800, offering a discount as part of a bundle.

$1800 seems a lot for a new door. It’s just an exterior apartment door, it doesn’t open to the outside world, so we’d like something fairly basic.

What do you guys think?

Thanks for any help!

Aklymroofing answers:

For an apartment door that is pre hung, I would not pay over $400 installed. I had replaced front ( nice door ) and rear door in my house and it cost $ 1,500. The doors cost about $250 at home centers.

Does anyone know how to frame a door?

want to remodel and my exterior doors need to be reframed before putting new doors on them. does anyone know a step by step website?

Aklymroofing answers:

The rough opening for the door should be no wider then about 1 inch then the door frame that u are installing…any more then the trim might not cover the gap…. Hinge side should be screwed tight against the framing the other side u can add shims till the door sites in the opening square and plum….run a thick bead of caulking where the door will sit before installing…..remove the weather striping from the sides of the door…..this is where u are going to place the screws to secure the door to the framing….reinstall the weather striping…use a good long 2 1/2 inch to 3 inch screw….fill and gaps between the rough framing and the door frame with foam ( liquid foam in a can )….before buying a new door remove and trim molding around the inside of the door and measure the rough opening of the door top to bottom and side to side…..take that measurement to the hardware store and they can help u with the proper size door for your opening

Dent In Exterior Door has a fist dent from someone punching it?

My exterior door has a fist dent from someone punching it. Does anyone know a cheap way to fix this without buying and hanging new door?

Aklymroofing answers:

Step 1:

Remove paint around the dent with a wire wheel. Roughen the bare metal with 60-grit sandpaper.
Fill a dent or hole in a steel door the same way a body shop would fix your car. You can do this with the door in place, but it will be easier with the door lying flat on sawhorses. Remove an area of paint a couple of inches larger than the damaged spot (Photo 1). Sand away the paint with 60- or 80-grit paper, or do the job faster with a small wire wheel in a drill.

Tip: If the damage is near the bottom of the door, you can skip the repair and cover it with a metal kick plate (find at home centers and hardware stores). Kick plates are about 8 in. Wide and come in lengths to match standard doors.

Step 2:
Mix auto body filler and fill the dent using a wide putty knife. Avoid leaving humps or ridges. If necessary, add more filler after the first layer hardens.

Step 3:
Sand the filler smooth with 100-grit paper. Use a sanding block to ensure a flat surface. Prime the repair and paint the entire door.
When the filler has hardened completely (about 30 minutes), sand it smooth (Photo 3). After priming the repair, you could paint over the primer only. But the new paint won’t perfectly match the older paint, so it’s best to repaint the entire door.

Ruth asks…

If I do not keep the interior doors closed, would I be wasting the AC flow?

I do not leave exterior doors open and the windows open whenever I put on the AC. Suddenly, one thing came up to my mind about the interior doors. If it is not closed, does it effect the flow? It is not the AC that hangs on the window. It is the AC system that keeps every room cool, including the bathroom. Opened or closed interior doors, I don’t really notice any difference.

Aklymroofing answers:

In a properly installed system it should not make any difference because there should be a supply and return air in each room, If a central return air is used the space under the doors should allow proper air flow throughout the house.

What are the laws in UK regarding adding images to the side of a car, such as a bloody hand print?

I am restoring a car and the external design is supposed to be that of a zombie survival theme. Thus i would like to add a bloody hand print and blood splats and smears to the outside of the body. Also some semi transparent marks to the side windows.

Aklymroofing answers:

Hi,

As the other answer mentions, you are free to add what you like to your car, you may attract the wrong kind of attention to it though by adding something that may offend for example families with young children. I don’t know if you remember in the 1980s it was popular to have a false arm hanging from the back of your Sierra or what looked like fingers out of the boot lid, all was taken in jest. Now your side windows cannot be touched, the rear side windows are fine but not the driver or passenger, you would be fined when caught and have up to 6 points on your license.

Aklymroofing answers:

I’ve been doing research for a few years and am now ready to purchase my own energy effecient windows. Look for those with the energy star label. Jeld-wen and Anderson (less expensive, more widely available) are two of the best brands. Anderson and American are available at any Home Depot. Their sales people will help you every step of the way. And no, I don’t work for them. I’ve practically remodeled my home out of my nearby Home Depot where the sales people and department folks know my name. (tells you where I go to get the good stuff at the best price, doesn’t it.)

Why did my passenger side window break?

Today, I had my car alarm installed with a power door lock motor on the passenger side. When I opened the hood today while I was parking on a hill, the passenger side window shattered as I was opening it (note that it did not shatter when I closed it).

How could this have happened? What should I explain to the shop that installed it?

Aklymroofing answers:

They did not adjust the window height correctly and the motor continued to put pressure on the glass until it’s tinsel strength gave out and it shattered. This is common when people have been working inside the door. They bump or have to loosen the windows height adjustment when they install parts most times. Now proving that they did this can be difficult. It’s cheaper and less hassle to go to a wrecking yard and pick up a replacement window. Cost is about 10 to 15 dollars.

What kind of paint should be applied to a new smooth fiberglass front door (no wood grain)?

The exterior of the door will be painted dark red (barn color). Should the interior be painted the same color or can it be an off white to match the inside hallway?

Aklymroofing answers:

You can paint it the white.
Wash it first, if it is new. There is often some mold-relase residue on fiberglass, from the factory molds. It repels paint.

What should I look for when upgrading a house and my room?

Me, my mom, and my grandmother have decided to upgrade the house I’m living in. We’re planning on getting a new carpet, getting new bedding, kitchen appliances, and I’m going to paint the house. Do you have any tips? What carpet company offers the best deals? What companies sell the best interior and exterior paints? Should I get new furniture? Rearrange my furniture? Do you have any helpful suggestions??? I’d like any help I can get, thx!

Aklymroofing answers:

You definitely want to do all interior painting before getting the new carpet. That way if there is an accident, then no harm done because the old carpet is getting removed. Rollers are great for covering large areas like the walls while brushes are better suited for trim work (Think about getting a couple different width brushes, wider for larger trim, smaller for work around window panes). Painter’s tape is good for masking off things you don’t want paint on. Say the wall is a different color than the door frame. Paint the wall first, let dry, then run the painter’s tape on the wall around the door frame. You can pull the tape off after painting the door frame (painter’s tape won’t pull up the paint on the wall assuming it has dried properly). There are also tools for this (usually thin plastic or metal) for working in corners if you don’t want to fool with the tape. You can use a razor blade to get paint off the glass when working around window panes. For exterior work, be sure to prep all the surfaces before painting. If the old paint is cracking and peeling, scrape it or sand it. Painting over a spot that is peeling just means you’ll have to go back later and repaint. Use a primer over all bare wood, it will help seal it. Look into water-based paints for both interior and exterior because cleanup will be easier. Wear a mask when sanding painted surfaces and make sure you have proper ventilation when working in enclosed areas.

What is smallest quantity of paint Home Depot or Loews will match?

I replaced a damaged section of 3″x3″ wood siding on my home. I want to take a color sample to Home Depot or Loews and get some exterior color matched paint to make the repair less noticable.

What is the smallest quantity of paint they will color match and sell me? I would hate to have to buy a gallon of pricey exterior paint for a 9 square inch section of my home.

Aklymroofing answers:

Probably a quart, but maybe a pint.

Carol asks…

We are painting the exterior of our front door.?

My boyfriend seems to think when you paint the exterior you paint the interior the same color. Which would be a deep red…would someone please explain to him that you normally leave the interior white…he doesnt believe me….or am i the one in the wrong?

Aklymroofing answers:

The outer surface of your front door should complement the exterior of the house … The interior surface should go with the interior of the house!

It is that simple! The surface that you see should relate to its surroundings … You cannot see the outside surface from inside, nor can you see the inside surface from outside!

I LOVE a red front door! It makes a welcoming statement and points your guests (unmistakeably!) to the entry. But once inside (and the door is closed) the interior surface should blend or relate to the interior walls of the entry. Doesn’t have to be the same color as the walls, and it sure doesn’t have to be WHITE, but it should look like a part of the interior decor.

Charles asks…

What are the guidelines for choosing exterior paint color; my home is pink brick.?

The trim is a light beige now and I’m thinking I want to go darker to hide dirt, especially on the front door. The first thing you see when you walk inside the house is an accent wall that is a deep purple.

Aklymroofing answers:

Swiss chocolate and pin look beautiful together. That gives you something darker than beige, but still very elegant.

Carol asks…

Has anyone been on the Grand Canyon skywalk yet?

Aklymroofing answers:

Yes, I was there this weekend and went out on the Sky Walk.

First off, people should be warned that it is NOT the way it appears in the ‘artist renditions’ on the promotions and offical website. The drawings make it look like the bridge is mostly solid glass and is directly over the Colorado River 4000 feet below. It is not.

The Sky Walk is located on the rim of a small side-canyon off the main gorge. The Colorado River is about a half-mile away and only a small portion of it can be seen in the distance through the mouth of the canyon. Even in this small side canyon, it is NOT a straight cliff drop to the bottom. Like most places in the canyon, there are various ledges and slopes below the Sky Walk. If you were to drop a penny of the far end of the Sky Walk it would probably only make it half of the way to the bottom of the side-canyon. An impressive drop of well over a thousand feet, but not as big or dramatic as they make it sound.

As for being on the Sky Walk… It is supported by two large metal U-shaped beams with the walkway laid on top like planks across a boardwalk. The metal supports themselves block about half the view through the floor, so you don’t get this wide sweeping ‘walking on air’ view – more like looking through a window or trap-door. And all you see even then, is just a pile of rocks and ledges. Yes, it IS a little weird to look down and see nothing beneath your feet but space, but it is not as dramatic as it sounds. The view looking outward over the railings of the Sky Walk is very pretty and scenic, but not much different than the same view while standing on the rim.

Another thing that is misleading in the promotions is the locations. While the Sky Walk is technically in the Grand Canyon, it is a long long way from the section covered by the National Park to the east. The National Park covers the deepest and most dramatic parts of the canyon that you see in books and post cards. The Sky Walk is located on the Hualapai Indian Reservation where the canyon is just about to empty into Lake Mead. The part of the canyon – while still big and impressive – is not as big, complex or interesting as the part covered by the National Park (they put the park where they did for a reason). In fact, the Sky Bridge is so close to Lake Mead, that the river is already starting to run into the Lake and no longer has much of a current.

Don’t get me wrong… It is an interesting experience, but it is NOT what is portrayed or described on the websites and I do not like the way it is misrepresented. I completely sympathize with the Hualapai trying to leverage their land to improve their conditions – there is a lot of poverty there and being so close to Las Vegas, they can’t compete with a casino. But the Sky Walk is misleading, over-priced ($75 per person) and touristy. I honestly hope the Hualapai find some way to develop the attractions on their land in way that benefits both them and visitors – but right now, I can not honestly recommend the Sky Walk to anybody.

Chevy Colorado Remote/Key?

I am getting a used Chevy Colorado today. It is a 2005, SE with power locks and windows, leather, sunroof. I like the new keys that Chevy has. The key fob has a button that lets the key flip out. I was wondering if it would be possible to get a new key like that and have it programmed to work on my 2005 Colorado?

Aklymroofing answers:

No. Your Colorado uses a different keyway than the flip key remotes. Those have keys with the side-milling like you would see on a VW key. It would not slide into your locks or ignition.

Black mold on house trim?

we have been getting a lot of mold on the white trim all around our house; it’s frustrating because we have cleared trees and brush around the house for better ventilation; wonder why it keeps coming back; was thinking of putting new vinyl siding on entire house, but I’m afraid that the mold will continue to grow under it.

Aklymroofing answers:

Mold is going to grow when the area becomes moist and does not dry out. If you can dry the area out and do all siding including new soffit and fascia you should be able to get a weather tight seals so moisture doesn’t get under the siding. I would ask a siding professional that install vinyl siding and see if moisture does get behind the singing for some reason if the vinyl siding would allow it to dry out. Try http://www.windowsandexteriors.com for more resources and they have a vinyl siding professional available to talk too. I have asked them questions before about replacement windows in Colorado and they were very helpful.

Grand Canyon: South Rim or North Rim???

If you could visit only one, which would it be? I know that the south side is more visited, and has more attractions, but do I need to see it from this side? I am speaking as a tourist/photographer. Please speak from experience. Thanks.

Aklymroofing answers:

It is a tough call as the two rims are VERY different in all respects and both are well worth visiting.

As others have noted, the North Rim is higher elevation (cooler and more forest) and is less developed and less crowded. Because of snow, it is closed mid-Oct to mid-May. It has fewer overlooks that you can easily drive to, but if you are willing to take the extra effort, the views are generally better than from the South – most of the really famous GC rim photograph sites are from the North Rim.

Point Sublime is on the North Rim and it is considered by many to be the best view in the canyon. The north rim view of Wotan’s Throne from Cape Royale is maybe the most commonly painted scene from the rim. Toroweap Overlook, with straight cliffs down to the river is also a classic shot (long rough road to it though). My personal favorite North Rim view is at Dutton’s Point on the Powell Plateau which juts into the canyon and allows you to look right down the length of the Colorado River (involves a long hike). The North Rim also has Angel’s Window – a large arch on the rim.

The advantage of the South Rim is that there are more overlooks and different views that you can easily access by car and thus visit together over a short time period. There are also many historic buildings on the South Rim which can make for good photos. The best South Rim views (in my opinion) are at Yavapai Point (view of river and Bright Angel Canyon), Grandview Point (view of Horseshoe Mesa) and Desertview Watch Tower (interesting different view of the more open eastern end of the canyon – the tower itself is cool too).

Either rim is definitely worth visiting and if you have the oppurtunity, I would definitely recommend visiting both at some point. Also, I would recommend hiking down into the canyon a little too to get a sense of what it feels like to be IN the canyon with the walls towering around – very different experience than being on the rim. It is like the difference between just seeing the outside of a historic castle or cathedral without seeing the inside. You don’t have to go all the way to the bottom (in fact, they strong recommend NOT doing that as a day hike), but even just going down the South Kaibab Trail a mile to ‘Ooh Ahh’ Point can be a great experience.

As for your ultimate question, about if you could see just one… From a photographer’s perspective, I would vote for the North Rim if you have the time (and a high clearance vehicle to get to Point Sublime). If it is winter or you have limited time, your best bet is probably the South Rim.

Joseph asks…

what paint can be used by children to paint exterior walls?

We are looking to do a project with children that requires them to paint a design onto an exterior wall. Do you know what type of paint would last for years, be weather proof and be safe for the children to use?

Thanks

Aklymroofing answers:

House paint is weather proof and would be perfect for your project. You can use latex paint in a semi gloss finish and it will last for years, just like the paint on a house. But, the best way to get any paint to last is to prevent it from premature peeling and flaking is to use a primer first. Adults can do this prep work, and allow it to dry, so the kids begin their painting project. You can get the supplies you need in a home improvement store. You can buy quarts of paint in various colors to complete your project.

Paint is safe if it gets on your skin, but can be harmful when swallowed or if it gets into the eyes. So, supervision is recommended and goggles to protect the eyes is not a bad idea.

When my son was a toddler, I allowed him to put his hand prints here and there on one white wall with primary colored interior latex paint. As he grew he added his prints again about once a year. After the project was done we had small, medium and large hand prints on the wall. The paint never hurt him one single bit.

Charles asks…

Attention pro-house painters: How do I deal with peeling paint on interior walls?

A primer was not used before applying latex interior paint on chalky walls and now the paint can be peeled off like a removable sticker in some areas but not in others and resorting to scraping off with a razor scraper. Any suggestions on how to deal with the problem areas where the paint doesn’t come off so easily? (And yes, primer will be used before repainting.)

Aklymroofing answers:

My son is a professional painter. His suggestion is to sand the walls using 80 grit sandpaper, wipe the walls down with damp rags to remove the dust then use your primer.

He suggested this happened from latex paint being used over an oil based paint without sanding prior to repainting; this happens a lot in homes that are 30+ years old as most house paint (both interior and exterior) was oil based.

Linda asks…

Typically, how often do you need to paint a wood framed house in Colorado?

Thinking about a Frame construction house in Colorado. How often does a house exterior need to be painted in this climate?

Aklymroofing answers:

With a good sanding and primer the first time, every 5 to 8 years. The time of year you paint has a lot to do with it. Do not paint in the summer heat or in high humidity. The cool spring is the best time to get this job done. Latex is the better paint to use. Stain fades quicker and oil based paints are over rated and once again too dependant on oil.

Ken asks…

What causes bubbles on exterior door?

I have a fiberglass door that has been painted before. I sanded, cleaned. primed and got bubbles. Resanded, spot primed top coated and got bubbles. Sherwin Williams says that some of these doors are nonpaintable and I need to sand down to fiberglass and then try a bonding primer. Anybody ever have this problem or hear of a door you can’t paint?

Aklymroofing answers:

Hi Buster,

Trust me here. All properly prepped doors can be re-painted.

What has evidently happened is you missed the “re-coat” window. In order to add another coat of paint, you have pay STRICT attention to the manufacturers re-coat times.

Example: “Additional coats may be applied within one hour or after 24 hours.”

In other words, once the paint sets beyond that first hour, the solvent in the next coat of paint will actually act as a PAINT THINNER, and cause the lower coat(s) to bubble or “alligator”.

While it appears that the paint has cured to the point of being ready to accept another coat, don’t be fooled………. It’s NOT READY.

I’ve made the same error myself in the past, and when it happened to me I was just as stumped as you are. Some lessons are harder learned than others, and by the time I’d sanded off all my hard work and had done it right, I swore I’d never disregard the manufacturers re-application times again!

NOTE: NEVER paint anything in the beating sun. If you MUST paint outdoors, do it either in the shade or a well ventilated area/garage. The hot sun will shoot the cure/re-coat times all to heck!

Ok to paint cars exterior with spray can paint?

My car is gloss black, i have some key damage to repair and also i have a rear bumper which i need to completely strip off the old colour and spray on the new colour ( gloss black ). Would it be ok to do the bumper with Spray can paint? as long as its gloss black and i’ll be using spray can primer, wax n grease remover etc… just all in the spray can form… will this work providing i spray it right? any tips when using spray can paint to do a bumper or other parts?

Aklymroofing answers:

When a car is painted by a body shop or factory a clear coat is put on top of the paint to add extra shine to it. You won’t get that same look, even if your paint color matches, without applying a clear coat.

my driver side door on my 2000 hyundai elantra wont open from the inside of the car any advice on how to fix?

I had my driver side door fixed by a mechanic before and it worked fine for about 6 months and now it wont open from the inside again! Any suggestions on how i can fix this problem myself without having to take it to another mechanic?

Aklymroofing answers:

On my 99 Elantra, there was a little bar that goes from the handle to the hinge. Undo the screws that line the door panel, and if you have manual windows like mine, you will have to use a special tool to take it off. If you don’t have a tool, then take it to a mechanic. It’s worth putting a little money to make sure it’s done right.

Why do my bathroom walls now get condensation streaks after I shower? How can I prevent them?

After I shower I get long condensation streaks on my walls that stay there for hours after the shower. I usually put my exhaust / heater on when I shower. It happens when the exhaust is on or off, and when the door and the side window is open.

Why does this happen? What can I do to prevent it.
I take very short showers. Normally they’re under 5 minutes. I take relaxing baths about once a week and have the water on longer then.

Aklymroofing answers:

Extractor fan on, shorter showers, AND dry the walls/tiles immediately after you have dried yourself.
Also keep the door to the bathroom/shower room closed to prevent the steam spreading throughout the house.

Should I replace attic door with insulated exterior rated door?

We are having a lot of work done on our neglected house. New roof, attic insulation, new windows, doors, and siding.

With all of these energy efficient upgrades, I am wondering if the door to the attic stairway should be replaced. It is a drafty OLD wooden door. The contractor just put a ton of insulation into the attic floor. I asked him if we should replace the attic door with an exterior rated door. He thought that was a weird question and said no, just leave it as is.

But I think that having an uninsulated door to the attic will be a thermal drain. Thoughts?

Aklymroofing answers:

I noticed my attic door was very warm to the touch in the summer months and cold in the winter. Mine, like yours, was an uninsulated interior door. Instead of replacing the door, I went to HD and bought a 4′ X 8″ sheet of 1″ styrofoam ($13) and cut it to fit the backside of the door. I attached it with some small nails. Now my door is cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

How long does it take for paint to dry on concrete?

Want to put primer on a concrete paver. After it dryes using exterior paint, I would have my Grandchildren make a handprint. How soon can I put a sealer on the paver? I was hoping they could take them home that day.

Aklymroofing answers:

If the handprint isn’t very gloppy, you could probably send it home right away, and then maybe mom or dad could seal it.

Maria asks…

how do i get exterior paint out of my daughters school jacket thats made of polyester?

my daughter leant on an outside wall and got exterior paint on her polyester school jacket …it has already been through the washing machine on a cold cycle..

Aklymroofing answers:

First you might try soaking the jacket in a gallon bucket with several capfuls of Woolite laundry soap for 2 days to loosen the paint. Since the paint has dried and was not removed, you will likely need to scrape off the paint. Lay the jacket on a flat surface – like ironing board – place a towel under the area of the paint. Using the flat edge of a spoon, slowly scrape the stain – by pressing downward into the fabric. Use short strokes and do not push too hard or you might get a hole in the material. Good Luck!

I need to paint over outside brick to cover graffiti, anything a first time painter should know?

I have exterior paint with a deep base. I just need to know if I can just start painting or if there is anything else I need to do. I have only painted walls on the inside of a house before.

This is for my job, my boss has bought the paint already and has asked me to do it.

Thank you for any help.

Aklymroofing answers:

You have to seal the brick and mortar first. Once the sealant is dry, you can either use a roller or a sprayer. The roller will apply a thicker, better coat, but the sprayer is much faster.

If grafitti is a reoccurring problem, use the sprayer because you will end up painting a lot. Also, the brick and mortar only needs to be sealed the first time you paint it.

Ruth asks…

How much does a professional home exterior and interior paint sprayer cost?

I am about to buy a professional paint sprayer that paints I can use to paint houses. I will be doing interior and exterior paint jobs. Thanks for the help.

Aklymroofing answers:

My graco gas powered sprayer was $5000, no electric required, very nice to have. A good tall boy electric from graco or titan should be about $ 2000 – 3000 based on volume of paint you will. E using per job. You can get an ok (just ok) unit for about 1200. DONT GET A CHEAP SPRAYER OR SPRAY GUN. Make sure gun is rebuildable.

I live in florida and 30% tinting does not comply with FL law.
Windshield:Non-reflective tint is allowed along the top of the windshield above the manufacturer’s AS-1 line.
Front Side Windows: Must allow more than 28% of light in.
Back Side Windows: Must allow more than 15% of light in.
Rear Window: Must allow more than 15% of light in.

I need to get to 310 East 85th St. between 1st and 2nd avenues in NYC. I want to use public transportation.?

I am coming from Metropark, NJ. What is the best way to get there?

Aklymroofing answers:

Take NJ Transit from MetroPark to NY Penn Station (one way fare $10.00). Make sure you buy your ticket BEFORE you get on the train (tickets bought on the train cost up to $6.00 more)

At NY Penn Station go to the Long Island Railroad level, walk past the LIRR ticket windows for the NYC Subway lines 1, 2 and 3 (numbers in red circles). Take any one of those trains UPTOWN for one stop to 42nd St-Times Square.
– – At 42nd St, use the staircase at the front of the platform, go up to the mezzanine and make a right, walk to the 42nd St Shuttle (S). Take that to 42nd St-Grand Central.

– – At Grand Central, follow the passageway to the 4, 5 and 6 trains (numbers in green circles). Take an UPTOWN 4 or 5 express train or 6 local to 86th St/Lexington Avenue. Exit to the street. When you get to the street walk on 86th St. In a direction away from Lexington Avenue (do not cross over Lexington Avenue) for 2 blocks (3rd Avenue then 2nd Avenue). Cross over to the other side of 2nd Avenue, make a right and walk one block to 85th St. Make a left on 85th St.

The NYC Subway fare is $2.50 if you buy a single fare ticket from one of the vending machines or $2.25 if you buy a MetroCard for $4.50 (2 fares) or more from either the vending machine (cash/debit/credit) or attended booth (cash only).

Wall insulation question for NJ?

The builder is putting on 2X4 – R13 and the house is being built in Central NJ. Increasing to R19 would mean getting town approval and that could delay the process. Any suggestions of how to get around this, would an insulation sheathing of R5 be helpful, would that be considered structural changes…is that expensive? Suggestions are appreciated, thanks.

Aklymroofing answers:

R 19 wall insulation usually is installed with 2×6 walls…so the builder would charge a lot more; it’s a substantial change. There is R15 insulation for 2×4 stud walls. What is your exterior siding going to be? If you install vinyl siding you might be able to go with a thicker rigid board insulation underneath and improve your insulation factor. There is also this wall wrap which is thick DOW foamwrap http://www.sbsalaska.com/assets/quarterly/topics/housewrap.htm
Remember as you thicken the wrap or exterior foam, you will then need thicker window trim, cornerboards, etc. Builder will charge for that too. ALL of this should have been resolved before building! If you are in hurry, then build the house per spec, live and learn. Any changes now will cause possible serious delays.

I’m visiting New York for the first time next month. Any hotel/hostel suggestions which are below $50/night?

I am seeking an accommodation which is clean, convenient and fun…for 3 nights only. Am not familiar at all with NYC. :)

Aklymroofing answers:

I’ve been to NYC twice without a ton of money and it is do-able. I’m not sure how to get there from NJ without taking a train, taxi or subway. But here are some suggestions of what to do while there:

I definitely recommend taking the Staten Island Ferry from lower Manhattan. It’s free as long as you hop back onto it. It’s about a 30 min ride each way but you get stunning views of the Statue of Liberty and of the city! Make sure to grab a seat on the right side when it takes off.

I ended up eating a lot of pizza there, too, which is inexpensive and everywhere. There’s nothing like New York style pizza even if it’s just from a corner shop.

And I also echo the same suggestions of just spending a day at Central Park, which is free, and grabbing hot dogs at a local stand. There are tons of food stands everywhere that are cheap and quick for lunch.

Another day can be spent at the Met. Museum of Art. A lot of people don’t know that there is a suggested donation amount per person, but that’s just a suggestion! You can put down whatever amount you want, and say that’s all you’ll pay. (My uncle who is a native New Yorker shared that with me.)

Make sure to walk around Times Square, there’s plenty to see, even if it’s crowded with other tourists. And there’s plenty of window-shopping. I also suggest finding Canal Street, though. There are tons of cheap finds there from purses and jewelry to souvenirs to electronics! But beware, it’s also the place to find knock-offs. I don’t know if they have been cracking down on those who sell movies, but I found it to be very safe.

How long does mixed media art last?

For example I do paintings with trash in them (plastic, wood, metal, rice, etc.) and the paint I use is regular house paint. I read that the paint is not meant to last forever so it shouldn’t be used for art, but how long is a painting with junk in it going to last anyway? I hope the pieces aren’t going to start popping off in ten years.

Aklymroofing answers:

Exterior house paint sheds pigment to maintain its color instead of fading but has to be renewed/repainted periodically for best protection.
The life of mixed media would depend on the media – rice might attract insects, etc.
“a painting with junk in it going to last anyway?”
A museum would consider an item that lasted under 100 years to require constant preservation.
But there are artists who do mixed media that expect it to rot or dry up before the season is over.
Where do you fall? The chemistry of paint and other media has been a concern of artists and their patrons for a long time.

What to wear when painting houses?

I am starting a painting job next week painting the interior and exterior of houses. It’s my first time professionally painting. I am just wondering what I should wear? Is it okay to paint my tree house with acrylic?

So I used to have a van to hang out with friends in, but that went up in smoke (literatley) So… I think that I’m going to make my old tree house as a spot to hang out with friends and paint and draw, especially since its out in the woods and open life. I want to paint a mural thing on the inside walls… would plain acryllic be okay to paint it or would it wear off too soon? do i have to use house paint?

Aklymroofing answers:

You will probably need to prime it before you actually paint it. You also need to use exterior paint. It doesn’t have to be oil based any more but it definitely has to be made for outdoors. For a cheap base coat, and perhaps an inspiration, you can usually get a bargain on paint that was mixed for someone and they decided it wasn’t the color they were wanting. That’s how I painted all of my closets and yes, I used exterior paint for them (because that’s what they had).

How does a person get a small painting business started?

Aklymroofing answers:

Start off trying to do exterior jobs so you are more likely to be seen.
Have a sign made with your phone number that you can stake in front yard where you are working so people know how reach you.
Offer your services at a lower price until you get a backlog of jobs and people see what good work you do for a fair price.
And make up some fliers to hand out to the neighbors where you are working offering free estimates.
Also, if you do get a referral from a paint store, make sure you try to use their product.

Thomas asks…

Can i use indoor house paint on my exterior door? Would that be ok or why wouldn’t it be ok?

I would like to paint my front door as well as the walls around our courtyard and front porch.

Aklymroofing answers:

Interior paint is not made to withstand the weather. Exterior paint is chemically, a superior paint, and thus, it tends to cost more. Since you mention painting walls and the door… I will also add this… The type of surface you are painting will also dictate to some extent, what kind of paint you must use. I prefer enamel, or epoxy base paints for metal objects. It dries to a harder, tougher surface. For wood and other porous surfaces, I prefer to use a good oil base paint. Any good paint store can make both kinds of paint match in color if that is what you want. (Due to the chemical differences, they will go on as slightly different colors, but will dry to the same color) I wont even use interior wall paint on the ‘inside’ surface of a steel door… I buy enamel paint for that, and have it tinted to match if necessary.

We havent even scratched the surface between what kinds of finish you can get with paint either…. Flat, semi gloss, or high gloss… Typically, a door with have a ‘glossier’ (more shiny) finish than an interior wall.

Go down to your local paint or building supply store, and ask them about their paints, and what kind they would suggest for which surfaces, and where, you plan on painting 😉

Good Luck

What do you think of San Diego?

I am suppose to be movving from Pittsburgh, PA to San Diego, CA. How are people in San Diego? I travel alot and don’t except things. I move alot and can’t imagine how the schools and community would be. Plus flying!!!! I am try to keep my self from being nervous, any advice?

Aklymroofing answers:

Well the people in california generally are more conservative, they tend to stay more on the safer side and follow the “normal”
trend. They’re not typicall compatible with people from the East coast as the east, NY, NJ, CT, PA, are more liberal, fast paced.
It may take you awhile to get used to the area as it is much more crowded, polluted, and dirty than PA. It will also take you awhile to get used to some fo the people and their pace at life. Many people in CA also tends to mature slower, so i would expect you would probally get into some trouble/ disagree with new friends, such like that.

As for the plane ride, watch their movies, take a nap, dont sit by the window! You will feel much better. Think, what makes you comfortable, a special blanket and a pillow? Bring those on board and wrap yourself in them, pring a few magazines or books, just keep yourself occupied.

Best of luck,

BTW san diego is beautiful, a little bit dirty in my opinion

Do I have to let the police into the house (NJ)?

Say my friend is having a party at his house when his parents are away. He’s over 18, but not 21. There is alcohol at the party and people are drinking. The police show up and see beer cans and people drinking through the window. They knock on the door, saying they got a call about a party at this house and say they see people drinking inside. What do you tell them, and do you have to let them inside? Obviously most of the people wouldnt be over 21.

Does them seeing the beer cans through the window give them “reasonable cause” to enter despite the 4th amendment?

Aklymroofing answers:

First your friend is an adult with all the legal rights of his parents when it comes to the house he lives in.

Kinda depends if that window is next to the door that any person would normally go to to gain entrance, then the police can also go to that go and would be able to see in that window.

If that window is on the side of your house and they had to encroach on your curtilage to view inside it then the plain view doctrine does not come into play. They committed a crime and violated your friends Fourth Amendment right to be secure in his home. A good lawyer will jump on this like a cop on a donut. All the evidence collected after the illegal search (looking through the window they should not have been at) should be suppressed.

The best way to handle this is the friend should step outside and close the door behind him. Talk to the officers and politely tell them nothing is wrong and he will not consent to a search and for them to have a nice night.

Seeing beer cans in a house is not probable cause. Beer is legal to have in a home even with children there.

Under no circumstances would this cause an exigent situation for them enter without a warrant.

There are only 3 reasons a cop can enter your home.

A valid warrant based upon probable cause.
Exigent circumstances (emergency situations).
Permission is given.

Susan asks…

Is organized crime still involved with horse racing on the east coast: NJ, New York, Boston?

Aklymroofing answers:

Could be..Bottom line, speaking in general… Cash attracts schemers/cheaters, whether through organized crime or other. There have been bank scams, lottery scams, stock market scams, blackjack scams and a bingo scam. Probably the best-known horse racing scam took place in the fine period piece, “The Sting,” where a type of past-posting was used to swindle a bad man. Cheating somebody who deserves it is time-honored good theater…right?! Some type of horse racing hustle was at the center of “The Grifters,” a hypnotically dark film during which the actress Angelica Houston kept betting suitcases full of money at horse race tracks without squeezing down the odds much. Unfortunately, still most of the current crooked angles are total electric, involving computers, and the raids are put together by geeks, crack-heads or pari-mutuel tellers with multiple issues. Old-school race track skullduggery was colorful and was done by characters. Hawkers of tip sheets would update their publications after the first two races and would proclaim to those arriving late to the track, “Had the Daily Double!” People who had the Daily Double after it had been run made a lot of money selling tip sheets, another example of why the races are such a good place to be, tip sheet customers being your and my competition. Most horse track scams have come from the other side of the rail and involve the altering of races by either collusion or drugging. The possibility that there are some crooks over there who might occasionally attempt to steal from good Christian people is like another built-in obstacle in the game, an infrequent occurrence like a pitcher scratching up a baseball or a referee making a fishy holding call with a football game and millions of dollars on the line. Gambling isn’t church. The possibility of being cheated every so often is like a surcharge gamblers have to be willing to pay. Maybe there should be a trouble-line entry at the end of some past performances: PC (possible chicanery)..lol.

Horse players aren’t completely helpless against cheater crimes from the far side of the rail. You must be alert for that which makes little sense, for behavioral changes in animals and bettors. That somebody wants to steal from you also encourages moderation. On this side of the fence, there are relatively few ways for horse players to cheat each other. There are the kinds of basic crime that you can find in any mall where flashing cash is ill-advised, pocket picking and head-bashing.
The major rules change that is being talked about after that Breeders’ Cup scam has to do with shutting off the betting windows several minutes before the post.

This sounds pretty good to me, because I have always been a proponent of knowing what you’re betting. Perpetrators get caught. They have to give back the money, and probably jailed.

Crime involving money, organized or other happens everywhere People victimized by the more traditional stock market scandals probably wish they were as lucky as horse players at the moment..LOL!.

8 week old puppy in airplane cargo?

I need to ship a puppy that is 8 weeks old. He will be shipped through airplane cargo from Tampa, FL to Newark, NJ. Its about a 3-4 hrs plane ride nonstop. I was wondering from previous shippers which airline is the best and cheapest. Does the puppy still need a health certificate and its shots before being shipped. A puppy at 8 weeks cant get its rabies shot so please let me know ASAP. Thanks

Aklymroofing answers:

I am an Experienced breeder and have shipped puppies in the untied states . Puppies that are 8 weeks old do just fine , They need a Vet health Certificate and acclimation report, a crate that they can both stand up in turn around etc without hitting there head or touching the sides / Also Food and water dishes attached to the door / and it must be airline approved – don’t forget a blanket and lots of layers of newspaper for the bottom no soft toys only food or a treat should be in the crate with the puppy . Some dogs with smooched faces cannot be flown in extreme weather .
Continental Airlines 1800-575-3335 They have a Pet’s First program , there dogs are treated very well , but fly up on TOP of the plane behind passangers , in airlock secure quiet area ( far far away from the engines ) that is the same temprature as the passangers cabin . They are taken by an Airconditioned or heated Van from the check out window to the plane just before its ready to go . They do not put dogs with luggage. Because they are so good about not leaving dogs on the runway , waiting for a plane , and the dogs are keep in the Van , they do not have to have the acclimation report however its a good idea to have it done anyways.
This all being said , its mostly best to ship a puppy at night , where they would already be sleeping . All puppies are going to cry the first time going into the crate , rather its in your living room or at the airport . Do not overreact , the puppy will not only live over this experiance but they grow because of it. When an owner opens the Crate door they become an instant Hero .. No better starting point for an new puppy owner..
When people come and pick a puppy up , sometimes the best puppies are off looking around and aloof to the fact that people want to interact with them . But when a puppy is in the crate and waiting to be “saved” , and then it opens – its an instant bond !!

Shipping is safe .

How can I become a master in chess?

I know the very first concepts of chess like the moves of all the pieces and how they attack. Also checks and checkmates. But I really really suck in this game. I don’t have any money to buy books on it so how can I train myself in this game.

I know it is not a thing that I will learn in a night but I want something that would every time make me feel as “yes, I’ve learned <> today”.

Any help?

Aklymroofing answers:

The best way to improve quickly is to join a local chess club. It is usually very inexpensive (sometimes only a couple of dollars per month). You will find a lot of people willing to help you and analyze your games. You may even find someone to give you some personal lessons and training. If you cannot find a club or someone to coach you, the next best thing to do is study some books and keep playing. If you cannot afford to buy a book, there are plenty at your local library for free. Find a book that discusses opening principles and you can build from there. Once you learn the opening principles and some basic mating patterns, you should work on middle and endgame strategy. You can find free lectures every hour at Free Internet Chess Server (FICS).

I suggest learning general principles first and understand the reason for them. It will take you much further than just memorizing opening lines and not really understanding the theory behind the moves. Sooner or later your opponent will not make the book moves you’ve memorized and you will be lost. Try some openings that appeal to you for both black and white. Once you find a couple you like, stick with them for a while. Play lots of games with them and learn the subtle nuances. It’s not realistic to try and go out and learn all the openings.

If you just want to play on your own for free you can play on either Yahoo! Chess or Free Internet Chess Server (FICS). There are plenty of people to play at all levels. The best thing to do to improve your play is to save your games and study them. You can email the history of your games to yourself on Yahoo! And have someone analyze them and go over them with you. At FICS you can request your games be analyzed by higher rated players on the site itself.

For some free individualized training, you can go to: http://www.chess.com/. You can study Chess Openings, solve daily puzzles and watch videos from top players.

To specifically improve upon your tactics in chess I recommend going to: http://chesstempo.com/. It is free and you can solve puzzles at your own pace. It will keep track of your skill level and slowly increase the difficulty as you get better.

The main thing is to have FUN! It’s not about winning or losing, but discovering the art of chess. It’s an amazing game with seemingly endless possibilities.

Good luck and get to that next level!

How do fishfinders compensate for the motion of the boat?

So we were watching the BBC’s Three Men in a Boat, when they showed a fishing boat fitted with a fishfinder sonar. And the question arose how the screen shows a steady picture when the boat is pitching and rolling around?

I had a quick look around the Garmin website, after a search engine failed to throw up any obvious answer, but all to no avail.

Aklymroofing answers:

The normal beam is reasonably wide, like a floodlight. The narrow focused beam is much more sensitive to this issue, but able to penetrate far deeper and sends back much stronger reflections. The transducer is quite sensitive, and will accept signal back from surprising angles. An industry level sonar such as Furuno shows reflections and bounce as ghost lines below the main image (zoom out and you will see them) and this is useful in showing bottom hardness and inversion layers etc. As a professional Fisherman I was totally uninterested in an average view – I want all the info, now, every second or quicker. I push top end Furuno and Simrad to their max, and still want more.

Unless you are in quite shallow water the rise and fall of the boat is not too apparent. Going up and down on a the swell a couple of metres at a time shows up clearly as a regular ‘sine wave’ bottom shape. Radical rocking due to the rapidity of movement tends to show up as breaks in the signal, with a sort of scalloped appearance – but it does have a lot to do with the settings – I have my scroll speed set very fast but it is a tool I have used a great deal and I want instant info. Set slow there is a lot of stuff you don’t see.

The transducer is generally mounted in a spot on the boat that physically moves a lot less than your head does. A lot of effort is put into putting this in the most stable spot on the hull commercially. Many recreational setups are o.k. On the edge of the transom lower edge, and you won’t improve much on this if you can get it closest to the keel with out interfering with the flow of water to or from the propellor.

All units no matter how cheap have a comprehensive mounting guide, if followed you will get the best out of your machine.

You probably won’t find specific info regarding this, as the manufacturers are not interested in getting into a fight over how their systems work in rough conditions with casual users – when they cannot predict how the transducer will be mounted and so on.

In the commercial market the installation technicians and sales staff are very well schooled in how their systems work and must be mounted – believe me this subject is a large part of the sales pitch, and features highly in negotiating a deal!

Edit

People like me can tell you if the bottom is sand, shell, rock, mud, a mixture of some of these – we can even in our local waters identify the type and density of any weed – I can even tell the colour of the weed. As the signal is so fast on my set up I see the change on the readout instantly as the boat rocks, so it is real time and perfectly easy to compensate for – it’s live footage basically.

What’s the cheapest solution to get rid of roots in sewerage?

I have tree roots in the sewerage need cheapest solution for this problem

Aklymroofing answers:

Well I have been in the field 20yrs so here is your answer.
There are a few things you can do.
1st if you have your main line run 3 times a yr or so at 85bucks a time.
You could go to Home Depot and get A Machine for 289 With blades.
This way you could do it your self And do it every 3 months to keep up on it.
The machine you get there does a wonderfull job But it is not like the machines I have the cable’s I have can take a real beating the ones at HD take a beating but not as much so if you do it every 3months you wont have to worry about getting a new cable.
If it is really bad right now I would suggest calling someone out to have it run with there machine.
Also call your local plumbers and ask for root-x Not rid-x
What this is is a powder that will foam up inside your line and kill the roots.
There is a differece in the 2 products.
Do this after you run the line the cutter will cut the roots and it will suck up the foam and kill them.
But remember this it will not FIX the problem you have it will help you out alot though.
There company who makes the product has a warrenty that if you use there product and if your line backs up due to roots they will pay for the cleaning.
The only other way to fix the problem you have and I think you know the answer is to dig up the line and replace it and it will cost some money.
Also if you can kind out the tree that is giving you the problem cut it down and have the roots removed. This is not cheap either unless the tree is Small.
If you have any problem finding this product feel free to e-mail me at
kos101@yahoo.com
And I would be happy to help you out with the product.
If your wondering I have used the product alot and I have had no problems with it. It does work like it says and I have had customers that have been useing it for 6-7 yrs and in that time they have only had there mine line run 2times in 7yrs. Not to bad considering they had me run it every 6 months. So it does work
Goodluck

Steven asks…

What are your views on the HS2 high speed rail link?

I hear that some people are so objected to the plan, they are seriously planning to de-rail it.

Reading the BBC news, I have to agree it sounds like another Concorde, Millenium Dome, etc.

As much as I like the idea of a super fast rail link, has anyone considered those having to live / sleep near the thing?

Your thoughts please…

Aklymroofing answers:

I travel by train in the U.K. A great deal and also have known and loved the Chiltern Hills which are on the HS 2 route for 50 plus years. The project is daft. You can already get from London Euston to Birmingham in 1 hour 23 minutes 3 times per hour. This route could be made more frequent by making modest improvements to the West Coast main line. The Chiltern Hills are a uniquely beautiful English landscape enjoyed by millions each year. Visitors bring huge benefits to the local economy too.
For a quarter of the 32 billion cost of HS2 we could make immense improvements to the existing Inter City network as well as providing much needed new trains and improved journey times for the many people who commute into large provincial cities like Manchester, Sheffield. Leeds etc. We could also build a new westbound main lline from Heathrow Airport to Reading, giving direct train services from Heathrow to the West Country, Bristol, South Wales, Birmingham and the Midlands,
giving really fast journey times to these places without ruining beautiful countryside, and at the same time reducing congestion on some of the most congested motorways in the country

Ken asks…

How do I format the local disk drive?

It is my primary drive with windows. Also the only drive on the pc. And I know that I will have to reinstall windows and all drivers again. But I have some virus/registry issues that cannot be resolved with my anti virus and restore files have been corrupted. I’ve tried everything nothing eliminates the problems permenately. I’ve already made backups of everything that I will need after the format. I just need to know how to go about wiping the hard drive clean.

Aklymroofing answers:

Step One
When you format a computer hard drive you will lose everything that is on the drive. Therefore, it is very important to back up anything you might want later. Additionally, if you are going to be formatting and installing XP you need to make sure you have the discs for any applications or third party hardware you use since you will need to re-install your programs and drivers after re-installing Windows.

Step Two
Take a moment to think of anything that you have on the computer that you wouldn’t want to lose. Generally, you probably want everything in your My Documents folder, and you also want to save things like your favorites or bookmarks from your Web browser. Remember that each user on the computer has his or her own My Documents folder, Desktop items and Favorites/Bookmarks.

Step Three
Save everything to a CD, DVD or a hard drive that you won’t be formatting.
Tips & Warnings
You can find other How To articles on saving your data here on eHow.
Formatting a Secondary Hard Drive
Steps

Step One
Right-Click on the “My Computer” icon either on your desktop or in the Start Menu and select “Manage.”

Step Two
A new window titled “Computer Management” comes up. Select “Storage” from the left hand side by clicking it once, then select “Disk Management(local)” from the right side by double-clicking it.

Step Three
Now in the lower part of the main frame (right side) of the window you should see a nice visual of all your hard drives. Each line is a different drive. Each box on a line (with a colored bar at the top and a size displayed in MB or GB) is a partition on the drive. Partitions are separations of space on a drive. Unless you are doing something specific that requires multiple partitions, you only want one partition per drive.

Step Four
First you must delete any existing partitions on the drive you are going to format. Do this by right-clicking on the partition’s box and selecting “Delete Partition…” Since you already know that you will be deleting everything on the drive, and have already backed everything up, you can safely say yes to any warning the computer presents you with.

Step Five
Click to enlargeIf there are multiple partitions make sure you have saved everything off them since they might each have different drive letters (i.e. “D:” or “F:”). Then repeat the above step for each of them. If you only want to format one partition that is OK and you can continue to the next step without deleting the other partitions.

Step Six
The box for the drive to be formatted should now have a black bar at the top of it and should say “Unallocated” under its size (see picture). Right click on it and select “New Partition…” The New Partition Wizard comes up.

Step Seven
In the New Partition Wizard click next. On the next page make sure “Primary Partition” is selected and click next. Now make the size equal to the maximum (it should already be set to it), and click next again. On the next page the computer will automatically choose the first available drive letter for the new drive. However, if you like you can choose another drive letter from the drop-down menu, and then click next.

Step Eight
Finally the New Partition Wizard asks if you would like to format the new partition and if so what format. Choose “NTFS” as it is faster and more secure. Leave the “Allocation unit size” as “Default.” In the “Volume label” field enter whatever name you want the drive to have. Simple is better. Avoid using spaces. Lastly, if the drive is brand new and has never been used before check the “Perform a quick format” box. If the drive has been used before leave this box unchecked. Leave the “Enable file and folder compression” box unchecked and click next. Then on the next page click finish.

Step Nine
The wizard will now spend a little while formatting the drive. On old or large drives this may take a while. Do not close the “Computer Management” window until it finishes. You will know it is done when the word under the size of the drive changes from “Formatting” to “Healthy” and the name and drive letter you chose for the new drive show up. After it is finished you can proceed to use your newly formatted drive.
Formatting and Installing from the Windows XP CD
Steps

Step One
This section explains how to reformat a drive from the Windows XP installation CD. This can be used when installing a fresh copy of Windows onto a computer. Here it is especially important to backup all of your important information because upon formatting you will lose EVERYTHING that used to be on the drive. This includes all applications and device drivers, so you must back up everything you can.

Step Two
Insert your Windows XP installation disc into your CD drive (Home or Pro–it does not matter).

Step Three
Now as you computer boots a little more it will say “Press any key to boot from CD..” press a key to do so.

Step Four
The CD will load up a blue screen and then spend a while loading files it needs. When it is finished it will list a few options, mainly “Press ENTER to set up Windows XP.” Press Enter or Return.

Step Five
Now you will be at a screen to select where to install Windows to. This is where you can delete old partitions and format drives. The box in the bottom half of the screen shows all your drives and the partitions that exist on them. Use the Up and Down arrow keys to highlight your “C:” partition and press the ‘D’ key (if all that shows up is “Unpartitioned space” and you have no C: or D: partitions, skip this step). On the next screen press the ‘L’ key to finalize deleting the partition.

Step Six
Now you are back on the screen to choose where to install Windows. The box on the lower half of the screen should no longer show a partition but simply have an entry “Unpartitioned space xxxxxMB.” Select this with the arrow keys and press the ‘C’ key to create a partition on the drive. The next screen tells you the minimum and maximum sizes the partition can be and lets you pick the size. The default size is the maximum, but double check that the number entered is the maximum and hit enter.

Step Seven
Now you will again be back at the choose where to install Windows screen. But this time you will have a partition that looks something like this “C: Partition1 [New (Raw)]xxxxxxMB.” Highlight this entry and press enter.

Step Eight
The next screen lets you choose which file system to format the drive with. Choose NTFS as it is faster and more secure. If the drive is brand new and has never been used before then use one of the options that ends in “(Quick).” Or, choose one of the lower down options. Use the arrow keys to select the proper one and press Enter or Return.

Step Nine
From here you are all set and the installation of Windows will proceed starting with a format of your drive. This will take a while (over half an hour) so you can take a little break.
Tips & Warnings
YOU MUST BACKUP BEFORE FORMATTING OR YOU WILL LOSE DATA YOU NEED.

What is a simple way to vent a storm door in the spring and summer in order to relieve heat build up ?

I am getting new Steel Exterior doors and I want to make sure there is not too much heat build up in between the doors. I thought about just putting the screeens in the storm door, but this would lessen the security of the storm door. I also thought about leaving the storm door slightly opened about 2 inches to vent it. How big of a vent would you recommend on a storm door to relieve heat build up.

Aklymroofing answers:

If you are getting steel doors then nobody’s getting in, the storm door is just for show at that point =) so you should be fine with just screens. But if you would prefer the full security of your door then i would recommend using a all weather paint on the exterior of the steel door. That is what we use on our houses and we have never had a call back saying that the paint was peeling or buckling from the heat. And with the brutal summers we get here in Louisiana that says a lot for this paint. There is also another kind of paint we use in special circumstances but i can’t remember what it’s called. Just go to the paint counter at you local hardware store and tell them what’s going on. In my experience this guys are very knowledgeable and will help you in any way they can. Hope this helps

Where can I find old recycled exterior doors in Tennessee?

I want to buy a exterior man door for my garage, but I don’t need to buy new. I know there are places around that do deconstruction and save all reusable stuff for re-sale. I cannot seem to get on the right track to search for such places. I am in the middle TN area and any help is appreciated!

Check Craig’s list in Nashville, or check with Habitat for Humanity. In many locations, Habitat has a Restore that sells used building materials. Hope this helps.

What is the easiest way to remove door molding in order to install insulation strips?

I am trying to install new collapsible weatherstripping in my exterior doors. It’s a new vinyl type very similar to the old metal stripping, but you need to place it underneath the edge of the door molding.
I hope someone can help me out. Please respond as soon as you can, for it’s beginning to feel allot like Xmas!

Aklymroofing answers:

First thing is take a knife and cut the caulking on each side of the trim. Then simply take a thin prybar and pry it off. Just be sure to work it evenly so you don’t break the molding.

Robert asks…

How much does it cost to replace doors, garage doors, and windows?

I am looking into buying a house, but has one broken exterior sliding door, 6 large broken window, 2 broken exterior doors, and one broken interior door. How much does it cost to get these replaced?

The garage door is a wreck and probably needs to be replaced, as well as the garage door opener.
The windows are about 60″x80″, and I’d like them to be vinyl, double paned
Don’t care about nice doors, just need doors that will work, with keys (for exterior), etc.

Aklymroofing answers:

Depends on whether you’re willing to do the work yourself. My husband and I are in the same situation with a house we’re looking at. (Ours is a porch roof that needs work)

I’ve been told windows are fairly simple if you have the time and elbow grease to do yourself, as long as the wood around them isn’t rotted. Depending on your area’s window prices, it could be about 200-500 per window. With windows that large, you might want them installed professionally, so add another couple hundred total, easily.

Doors, again, anywhere from 80- 500, depending on what you get and who installs it.

Like the other answerer said, check Lowe’s or somewhere like that for local prices.

How to quickly fix botched latex paint area on exterior door?

Hi guys,

I accidentally touched some sticky latex paint on our exterior wood door we’re installing tomorrow. This left some unsightly bumps. We tried painting over it but the bumps are still somewhat there and the painted area is “goopy”. What’s the fastest way to repair this? I’m wondering if we could scrape the paint while it’s still sticky to smooth over the area. Or use a hair dryer on the area to dry it more quickly, then sand, then repaint the area again. Help!

Aklymroofing answers:

Hi!
Don`t do anything on the wet paint. It leads to more bumps.Make it dry and then sand the door with the sand paper and then paint it.
Hope it helps you!

Charles asks…

How many months can elaspe between applying exterior primer before actually applying the paint?

I finished painting the wood trim on my house towards the middle of last summer. The humidity and finaly the rain did not allow me to finsh painting.

Aklymroofing answers:

To get the best results you need to sand it lightly and primer it again. Primers chemical adhesion property is lost in roughly 2-3 weeks sometimes less. The purpose of the primer is to make the bond between the surface and the paint and your primer has lost that property. Especially on the exterior if you do not re-primer it, it will peel faster. SO For Best results re-primer it and it will save time later refinishing. As you know already painting is all in the prep work.

Steven asks…

Can you paint an exterior satin latex over an exterior flat, or do you need to prime over the flat first?

Someone once told me if you paint over the flat, because the flat is porous the satin won’t dry right. Do you need to put a coat of primer on the flat first?

Aklymroofing answers:

You can certainly paint a satin finish paint over a flat finish paint as long as the old paint is cleaned, free of dirt, oil, wax and all loose paint is removed and those areas are primed.

Joseph asks…

Does the paint of a jumbo jet need to be removed before repainting?

I was recently playing a trivia game, and it asserted that the paint of a jumbo jet had to be removed before repainting, due to the weight.

It said there could be up to 500lbs of paint put on the exterior of the plane, but even if this is true, that is marginal compared to the passengers and cargo the plane is carrying. 500lbs could be added if a family packs a lot of luggage.

So does anyone know whether there is any legitimacy of this fact?

Aklymroofing answers:

Not sure about all commercial aircraft. In the Military most large aircraft, larger than a C-130 get striped to bare metal every other depot. In between the just get a scuff sand and a top coat.
They is a considerable weight involved. That is why every aircraft is actually weighed after a full paint job.
From experience I can verify that a C-5 paint job requires almost 300 gallons of paint for a primer and top coat. Excluding waste a paint job usually weighs in at approx. 1700 lbs.
Aircraft smaller than a C-130 are stripped to bare metal and repainted every depot, approx. Every 4-5 years. In between they can receive touch ups as needed. Usually limited to less than 20% of aircraft.
In regards to earlier answer, NO military aircraft are left in bare metal these day. Paints primary purpose is corrosion prevention.

Do you need to primer concrete block when using exterior masonry paint?

I need to paint a block wall and was wondering if I have to primer it first, or just wash it with a hose first?

Aklymroofing answers:

You need to seal it or prime it or else those blocks will soak up that paint like a sponge

Jenny asks…

What type of paint goes well on washable lime for detailed painting?

I have to get a painting (picture of a logo) on exterior wall that was filled with washable lime or washable white paint and I need to know what type of paint should I go for… is it washable paint or some special paint. Also what type of brushes should be used in order to get the best result?
Thank you!

Aklymroofing answers:

Not exactly sure what washable lime is. Usually ‘washable paint’ refers to an enamel that is hard enough to be washed vigorously without risking damage to the surface. If that’s the case, you’ll want to remove any excess or poor condition material, clean the surface well, prime, and paint. The type of primer and paint will depend on what the wall is made of. There are specialty products out there for just about any kind of surface. Good luck!

I have a front door with a large window, along with two side windows and another one at the top. Every day when the sun is setting we can’t be in the living room because it gets so bright. What type of curtains should I put there to look nice but also block the sun?

Aklymroofing answers:

Well there are these Tiers and panels you can even get them as a pair for the sides and top. At JcPenney, kohls,Bed Bath and beyond.

* This one is good because the top can cover the window the sides can cover the side windows and the ones in the middle that are kinda pulled away can be closed when the sun is starting to set.

It’s my drivers side window, so I can’t secure the car or go anywhere until its fixed! I don’t want to do it again, but if I press the down button the window disappears completely. Then when you press up, the window rises almost enough to grab hold of (but not quite!), and won’t go any further.

I repair cars for a living, take the door trim of there will be a few screws and also the trim is cliped on then you you will be able to see whats stopping it, it could of popped out of one of the channels. If you dont have a clue about cars take it to a dealer and they will sort it in no time. Also auto glass people only replace glass if there is an electrical fault or it needs a new regulator they wont be able to do it.

Daniel asks…

How do I make my replaced car door shut properly?

I was in a little accident with my car and it ruined the passenger side door. I found a used door and placed it on the car. It latches shut, but it sticks out some and doesn’t close flush with the car. I put a manual lock/window door where the automatic one was. The window as well as the inside and outside handle work, the door just won’t close proper. Any ideas on how I can fix this? Thanks!!

Aklymroofing answers:

You just need to adjust it. There are a few adjustments, but you should know what you are doing.

What books would you recommend for expecting parents?

I’m expecting a child here with my fiance, and am wondering what books the online community would recommend for us? We would like to learn what to expect from the pregnancy, our rights as parents, my rights as the father, and also some raising ideas after the baby is born. I do not want a book on just how to raise the child, I would like the books to focus mainly before the birth. Thanks.

Aklymroofing answers:

Pregnancy varies so much from woman to woman. There are a few mens books out there on pregnancy, but bottom line is be genuine in your support and interest.
I highly recommend renting Happiest Baby On The Block DVD from your Hospital Maternity Resource Center or local Library. It’s quicker than reading the book, and gives great tips on soothing in those first few weeks at home. And you won’t need it much afterward, that’s why I suggest renting.
Also buy Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child by Weissbluth. It helped me understand the 2 hour wake period and most of our naps and bedtime are without a whimper, I read this at 5 months and our daughter is now 10 months. It’s a reference for years to come. Sleep is so important to our children, it shapes their sleep as adults. Our society is pushing us to go-go-go when we really should be focusing on scheduled nap times as much as possible. It may be inconvenient at times., but it doesn’t last forever.
As one phase goes, another one comes. Solid feeding your next process to learn. 2 great books I have rented from the library and eventually bought are The Baby Food Bible by Behan. And Mommy Made and Daddy too by Kimmel also wholesomebabyfood.com is a great resource. Don’t be in a rush to start, don’t force it, offer variety. Most doctors have little knowledge in infant nutrition. Find comfort in knowing that breastmilk and formula are the main source of nutrition until 1 year.

Good luck!

Wjhat to do with an old aquaroum?

I have this big 4 foot long aquarium that has been sitting around for ages in a spare room. If I had my way, I’d given it away already since we have no more use for it but my mom dioes not want to dispose of it for whatever reasons i do not know. Now I want to use the spare room for my mini gym. Any suggestions and ideas on how i can make use of this thing anyway aside from gathering dust?

Aklymroofing answers:

Since your mom may want to use it again as an aquarium, any option involving chemicals is out. Also, depending on what was in there before, there may be chemicals IN there that may kill plants/animals other than fish (or maybe including fish). Also, I’ve seen 4 ft tanks that are about 1 ft deep to ones that are 3 ft deep… A 3+ ft deep one would be iffy for a planter or storage, but great for a display case, and vice versa for a 1-2 ft deep one. Anything between 2-3 feet is up to you, I guess.

So, three options:

Storage: You can cut up cardboard (to width or length, and some supporting pieces — slot them to slide them onto the main pieces) to divide up the space if you want to. Since the aquarium is clear, you can paint the cardboard various colors/designs so it’ll look more constructed than “hey, an aquarium with stuff in it”. If you don’t want to see the stuff, wrap the aquarium with paper like it’s a present (tape, etc on the outside), then paint or leave as-is). Just remember to use it for soft stuff storage — clean changes of clothes, shoes, towels, cleaner/air freshener, dirty clothes, etc. Approximate cost: $5-15.

Planter: Buy a couple of large peace lilies/white sails or other large low light/care plants that would fill out the length of the aquarium. Buy 2-3 large bales of peat moss. Spread the bottom with a bale of moss to about 6 “fluffy” inches thick. Put the lilies on the moss, in the pots they came in. Spread the rest of the peat moss so that it hides the plastic pots. Since you’re planning on using the room for a mini gym, this is a great option since the plants will greatly reduce or entirely remove the inevitable sweaty/musty smell the room will get. Your mom might foot the bill for it, just for that reason. Make sure to put them near a window that gets decent light, but not all-day light (put them to the side instead of in front of the window if it gets a lot of light). Approximate cost: $40-70, depending on local prices and the size/type of the plants you get.

Table top/display case: Get a piece of luaun or other thin wood board (1/8″ thick). Cut it to overlap the aquarium by at least 1 inch on each side (measure length/width of aquarium, then add 2+ inches to your measurement). Paint or stain it any color you want. Buy some stick-on felt pads used to put on the bottom of floor legs to prevent scuffing flooring. Center your top and outline where your aquarium corners are. Cut the felt pads into strips and line up the strips along your lines so that will be on the outside of the aquarium. Place trophies, sports equipment, or motivational stuff in the aquarium. Cap the aquarium and use it as a tabletop — do not put more than 10 lbs on it though, as aquariums are not built to take vertical pressure (and everyone tends to underestimate how heavy their stuff is). However, you can use it to hold a small lightweight stereo and towels, as well as a few sports drinks. You can also use heavy duty cardboard for the top, but just cut off one of the large sides along all its corners, reinforce the other seams with tape/glue/staples (inside the box so you can still paint it if you want), and just cap off the aquarium with what’s left. To stop it from sliding around, do that felt strips trick. Call guitar stores and ask if they have any guitar boxes. You can also buy a new cardboard box used for moving that will suit the same purpose for about $12. Approximate cost for wood top: $15-25, depending on local prices, stain/paint options, and if you have to pay to get cuts made.

How can I become a stronger chess player?

WHat should I do? I can’t afford a chess coach, and I have a little trouble understanding analyzed openings.Plus, I don’t want to memorize all the moves. Please help.

Aklymroofing answers:

What are the major rules to Lacrosse?

I’ve just started getting into watching my local Lacrosse team and just wanted to know some of the major rules so I’m not too lost while watching the games.

“Men’s Lacrosse Rules

Men’s lacrosse is a contact game played by ten players: a goalkeeper, three defensemen, three midfielders and three attackmen. The object of the game is to shoot the ball into the opponent’s goal. The team scoring the most goals wins.
Each team must keep at least four players, including the goalie, in its defensive half of the field and three in its offensive half Three players (midfielders) may roam the entire field.
Generally, high school games are 48 minutes long, with 12 minute quarters. Each team is given a two minute break between the first and second quarters, and the third and fourth quarters. Half-time is ten minutes long.
Teams change sides between periods. Each team is permitted two time-outs each half. The team winning the coin toss chooses the end of the field it wants to defend first.
Men’s lacrosse begins with a face-off. The ball is placed between the sticks of two squatting players at the center of the field. The official blows the whistle to begin play. Each face-off player tries to control the ball. The players in the wing areas can release; the other players must wait until one player has gained possession of the ball or the ball has crossed the goal line.
Center face-offs are also used after a goal and at the start of each quarter.
Players may run with the ball in the crosse, pass and catch the ball. Only the goalkeeper may touch the ball with his hands.
A player may gain possession of the ball by dislodging it from an opponent’s crosse with a stick check, which includes the controlled poking and slapping of the stick and gloved hands of the player in possession of the ball.
Body checking is permitted if the opponent has the ball. However, all contact must occur from the front or side, above the waist and below the shoulders. An opponent’s crosse may also be stick checked if it is within five yards of a loose ball or ball in the air.
If the ball or a player in possession of the ball goes out of bounds, the other team is awarded possession of the ball. If the ball goes out of bounds after an unsuccessful shot on goal, the player nearest to the ball when and where it goes out of bounds is awarded possession.
An attacking player cannot enter the crease around the goal, but may reach in with his stick to scoop a loose ball. ”

and

“Women’s Lacrosse Rules
Before the game begins, the umpires check every stick for legality. The most common illegality in a stick is that its pocket is too deep. The strings at the bottom of the stick’s head can be pulled to tighten the pocket.
If a player commits a foul, the umpire blows the whistle and play stops. The player fouled wins or retains the ball, while the player who fouled her is moved several yards behind or to the side of the player she fouled.
If a major foul is committed in the arc by the defense, the umpire blows the whistle, and a “free shot” on goal is taken by the player fouled. All of the defense players are required to clear the arc to the border closest to which they were standing when the whistle blew. The attack player who was fouled takes her place at the hash mark closest to which she was standing when she was fouled. The defense must move away at least four meters from the fouled player. When the umpire blows the whistle again, the player can take a shot on goal or pass while the defense moves in.
There are no boundaries to the field, but if a ball enters an area that is dangerous, unplayable or not clearly visible to the umpire, the player who retains it or is closest to it (if the ball has been grounded), at the umpire’s whistle wins it. The player then waits for the second whistle to begin play again, either by running with or passing the ball.
When the umpire blows the whistle because a foul has occurred, or the ball has gone “out of bounds” all players must stop and check all forward movement. Play resumes and the players can move when the umpire blows the whistle again.
Checking — the method by which a player knocks the ball from another’s stick — is prohibited when it is: directed toward the face; uncontrolled; holding down the other’s stick,or when the checker’s stick is too close to the head or face.
Defensemen may not remain in the arc without guarding another player for more than three seconds.
When the ball is grounded, covering it with the back of a stick’s net, and preventing play by another player is prohibited.
No players, other than the goalie, may enter the circle around the goal cage if the goalie is present.
When a foul occurs, the player who was fouled is allowed a free shot at the goal, with the defense pushed to the perimeter around the arc. “

How can I become more confident in my business?

I’ve just joined a business (Amway) and most of the people I’m surrounded by are not looking for a job opportunity and a lot of this job is talking to find people who want a business opportunity and help them rise as you do and the money comes from what you sell and who you sign up. I believe in what I’m doing but I don’t really believe in my self.
I really need this but I am shy and I have a hard time starting up a conversation and I was wondering if anybody has any tips they can give me?

Aklymroofing answers:

I have my thoughts about Amway, but I will not talk about that today.

Being confident and able to talk to people is an excellent skill that you need to succeed in business. Whether you are promoting Amway or not, it will be beneficial for you to learn how to talk to people and ask them for business or information or whatever you need.

I would start by identifying why you don’t believe in yourself. Is there a reason for this? Think about your past experiences of success and failure and see if there’s a pattern that led to your doubt. If could be projects you’ve started but not finished. It could be things your parents or family members told you. There could be lots of reasons why you have doubt, but try to think about where it is coming from. That could be the first step to getting out from under your shyness.

Next, you need to truly believe in what you are promoting. If you believe in the product and the opportunity, then you should have no problem telling other people about it. You are right that many people are not looking for a business “opportunity.” Business owners usually have their own ideas and pursue them. Also, Amway has been around for a long time. A lot of people have negative feelings about Amway. They make good products, but many people are spooked by the network marketing aspect of the company. You need to come to terms with that and understand it for what it is.

Some people get nervous when they have to sell or ask for the sale. Try to remember that you are not selling. You are helping someone. If you really believe in your product, then it would be crazy for them to not want it. You have to be able to explain how it will benefit them and you have to believe that you are helping them. Ultimately, if they don’t want to get involved, then it’s their own thing – not an indication of your success or failure.

Selling is a hard business. You hear a lot of no before you ever get to a yes. If you want to be successful, you have to stay positive, stay motivated, and keep at it. Try reading success books and books on sales and networking.

You might try joining the chamber of commerce and attending those functions. Don’t try to sell to the people you meet (at least not right away). Just focus on meeting people and getting to know what they do. Collect business cards and write nice notes to them after. Start small. Have a goal of attending just one function and meeting two or three new people. Find out what they do and get a business card. Don’t focus on you or your product. Just talk to them. Find out something interesting about them. The networking and sales take place later on down the line.

There are lots of opportunities to get to know people. Volunteer in your community. Attend community events. Every time you do, make it a goal to get to know someone new. As you probably already know, network marketing is about getting to know people and they people they know. But you can’t sell cold to anyone. You have to get to know them and they have to get to trust you.

You can also consider joining an organization like toastmasters. They offer opportunities for people to get together regularly. Their main focus, however, is public speaking. People who participate give speeches and learn leadership skills. This may be a great way to break out of your shell.

For me, I had excellent training being on stage in plays. I’m naturally shy and reserved, but when I get on stage, I get to become someone else. I throw myself into that character and I’m very good at it. But then, I apply that same skill when I am in an uncomfortable situation. I become someone else and act the way that person would. I just pretend to be the successful, outgoing person I want to become.

You may not have the opportunity to be in a play, but you may be able to find acting classes in your local community. These classes can teach you to become more self-confident and outgoing. You can try a lot of goofy things in an acting class and it’s a safe environment with people who are supportive.

Those are just a few ideas I had for you. I hope it helps a little.

Good luck!
